This is a beautiful topic and Nigerians should ask questions. Sooner or later, one or two imbeciles will try to hijack this thread using tribalism to create disunity. I don't know what their plans are but we in the South must demand justice. We need to restructure the country into Regions now.. |

Excaperx:How can a "barren desert" be the source of the tomatoes, onions, beans, peppers etc that the "southern climate" cannot grow but must import from the north daily? How can a "barren desert" be able to sustain livestock better than the "southern climate" that plagues them with trypanosomiasis caused by tse tse flies? Your brain in front of a mirror. |

Here is a simple truth.... The reason why the North wins elections is not because population....it is because Northern politicans reach out of their comfort zones and form alliances. Buhari has been defeated before. In 2003 he won the North, but lost to Obasanjo nationwide. Same in 2011...he won the north, lost to GEJ. The politican who wins in Nigeria is the guy who forms alliances. Buhari for many years was 'the defender of the North', of its Hausa speaking side. The minute he woke up and realised that he needed other parts of the country to win...that's when he began winning. All the guys grumbling above me, who is the current Southern politician...apart from Obasanjo....who has alliances and people across the country(Even GEJ had to rely on Obasanjo). How many of our Southern politicians have done the spadework to win elections in Nigeria. Meanwhile, here on Nairaland, you have people who are bitter, who spend time shouting Afonja, and IPOB, and calling each other names....and you expect to win in 2023...for the South? You have people who since 2015 from the SOuth and even before have been calling the north, the same North that was suffering more under Boko....boko haram, Islamist, etc...and you expect those people to vote for your candidate.? Or to vote for Igbo or Youruba or any other Southerner? If we want the South to win, drop the insults and start connecting. In 2000 buhari was calling christians all sorts of names...and got nowhere in 2003....by 2014 he had learned his lessons, and was allying with all sorts of people..and he won again and again. I know someone reading this will call me zombi...so as for me, let me make myself clear. PDP and APC are both rubbish parties...and have done nothing much for Nigeria. But they win because the people who are supposed to be the change won't do the hard work...including myself. |

Oh and to any Southerner thinking that separating from the North is going to make us happy 1.How do we handle all the Southerners who have lost their means of livelihood in the North?? Biafra in 1967, when war started, had 2 million refugees clogging up the roads and making life difficult for the country....2 million refuggess from the North. 2.The North supplies most of the food we Southerners eat. When there is a split...we are going to use our oil revenue to waste on importing food....and food prices will shoot up. 3.We complain about Northern leeches...meanwhile we have the equally destructive Southern version? 4.Resource control....who controls the oil....the actual oil prodcing areas...or the whole South? Let's be realistic sometimes. |

coolzeal:Yeah, we need to restructure the country into regions...that at the end of the day would be centers of big tribes dominating small tribes. Go and find out why we have states...and why it was Gowon creating states...Yes, he did it to undermine Biafra...but that was made easy by preexisting grievances that minority tribes had against majority tribes in this country.(Gowon is from a minority tribe....that in the 1963-64 was agitating for Middle Belt region') And even if we restructure...the same issues will still be there.Corrupt leaders, heavily resource dependent regions, and so on. |

Xander85:Blame the west. The east always oppose the north in whatever wayo the north comes up with. The east has been shouting about this population of a thing right from when the white people conducted the first census. But the west, nothing matters to them than for the north to at least carry them along. |

Let me say the little I know about Nigeria population which is not read in book or heard on radio but the pure fact. 1. Census is a scam. Those brothers then in 2006 who were yet to marry were recorded as married men with at least two children each. That was to inflate the figures. Now, some of them are event yet to marry or has just a kid. What about our mortality rate? 2. North population is not as much as they are parading it but they are growing geometrically day by day. I am currently in Katsina and here you see a woman with 17 children. Sadly, this woman's husband has 4 wives with each given birth to 10 children each. The solution to this population issue that there should be electronic counting. The next census should not be on paper as that's inflating our figures. The damn thing is our government isn't ready. |

9jabull:The volume of ignorance in this particular post is astounding, if not legendary. Northern Nigeria is ravaged by poverty and disease but Republic of Niger is not? Chad is not? Does southern Nigeria not have the highest HIV/AIDS infection, spread and mortality rate in the country? Crime & daily ritual killings? How is this then a basis for your argument? You have no point. Then to the ridiculous claim that the North has no access to lakes and rivers. Shocking. This just exposes the level of ignorance and aloofness of the author about the true nature of the area he is trying to ridicule. There are dozens upon dozens of lakes and rivers spread across the North, many of which have been dammed or used for mass irrigation schemes among other applications (which is why the supposedly "arid region" remains the main source of the South's vegetables like Tomatoes, peppers, beans, pumpkins, beef etc). Is Kainji Hydroelectric Dam (Niger state) located in Aba? Is the massive Mambilla Hydroelectric project located in Ogbomosho? Haba. Nobody is an authority to claim the North is any less populated than has been reported officially; especially not through baseless half-thought conjectures....just like Nobody is an authority to claim the North's population has not been tinkered with in its favour by its politicians in power. All until a credible and acceptable census is conducted across the country (Which by the way, exposes once more the total foolishness of those who like to claim they do not need the Presidency or government to survive & thrive). |

tactius:During the regional era, government workers were dedicated, honest, efficient, sincere and reliable in their official dealings with members of the public. They were contended with their monthly earnings and judiciously planned their family lives in conformity with their take homes at the end of the month. The words ‘bribery’ and ‘corruption’ were unknown in labour lexicon. Those were the days of genuine commitment to governance. Those at the top thought less of themselves, but were more concerned about the people they governed and religiously implement developmental programmes that directly impacted on the masses. The revenue generated by each region was in proportion to its economic base. And it was judiciously and prudently applied to the various subheads. It is important to add that the Nigerian population was something in the region of about 65-million. Today, the population has grown exponentially, hitting almost 200 million. These are just synopsis of what the regional system of government was able to achieve. However, you can't be repeating same situation or scheme and expect results, that's insanity. It was on record that Nigeria fair better under Regional government before it collapses into States. |

coolzeal:If things were so good back then, why did Nzeogwu waste his time organizing his coup? Go and read books like Peter Enahoro s "How to be a Nigerian " and Achebe 's "A man of the people " (which allegedly predicted the 1966 coup, Achebe by the way knew nothing). Things were not rosy back then. Corruption, tribalism, etc were just as rampant back then. The main difference was that there was no Islamic fundamentalists (that came later) Stop looking back to the good old days. Democracy is hard work. |

Rolings:Sir what you are saying?, isn't the South more conducive, more productive, more wealthier and more safer than Core north? How can NW and NE be more populated than SW?, how is that possible?, let's not even Add SE and SS to the list. The population of Nigeria is a big fraud. I dare say North is not more than 30 million people. One day, just one day... until then, keep deceiving yourselves. |
| Re: Is Population Of The Northern A Reality Or A Fraud? by Efewestern: 7:59am On Apr 25, 2019 |
QuotaSystem:70% of Onions, Beans, Pepper, Irish potatoes, rice etc being transported into southern Nigeria are from Middle belt (Benue, Plateau etc). And how Is that related to the question the OP raised?, how can North even with all negative indexes be more populated than Southern Nigeria?, Even if you add Niger and Chad to your population, you guys still won't be up to 70 million, You guys dwell on fraud, lies and deceit. Just one day, until then, keep deceiving yourselves. |

| Re: Is Population Of The Northern A Reality Or A Fraud? by QuotaSystem: 8:17am On Apr 25, 2019 |
Efewestern:If you applied even just a bit of intelligence, you'd realize that those same negative indexes are that bad because they're calculated based on the North's huge population (per capita basis; google it). The same population you're disputing so where is the sense in using the indexes as a yardstick? Your frustration is evolving to acute confusion. |
| Re: Is Population Of The Northern A Reality Or A Fraud? by Efewestern: 8:21am On Apr 25, 2019 |
QuotaSystem:Prove me wrong, I have asked most of these northerners bringing in huge lorries to Warri and 90% of them always tell me they loaded their goods from Middle belt, I even collected the contact of one that supplied some correct Irish potatoes, even the Middle belt that is more blessed is still underpopulated. Now back to the topic, you didn't tell us how your population up north is more than the south, how is that possible when Southerners have better standard of living compared to your region. Even if you add the population of Niger & Chad, you guys still ain't up to 70million. |
| Re: Is Population Of The Northern A Reality Or A Fraud? by Efewestern: 8:29am On Apr 25, 2019 |
QuotaSystem:What huge population?, Is there any state in your region that is more populated than Lagos?, why isn't Lagos ranked one of the worst state in the country? A certain state in NW or is it NE registered only 2000 primary school pupils in their common entrance, meanwhile only a town in my LGA can register up-to 30k pupils per year, From all electronic data presented to us either by GSM providers, National ID, Etc the North didn't come close south. so where are you guys? |

Efewestern:I don't have patience for lazy thinkers. Look up the internet for where food crops are grown in Nigeria, nobody is interested in your lay pedestrian analysis. https://www.nairaland.com/2521578/nigerian-states-what-produce Your supposed better standard of living is based on the same greater population you're disputing. Do you need to be told that limited resources spreads thinner over a greater population? Go and read up on per capita statistics I can't help you further on this. Is the northern birth rate not quadruple the south? Is the southern HIV prevalence & death rate not more than double that of the North? Can you compare the emigration rates of Southerners compared to northerners? THINK! I would have enlightened you more but I have little patience for lazy thinkers especially those of the arrogant, obstinate stock. Take your frustration to the National Population Commission/NASS and stop jumping in my mentions. Bye. |

Efewestern:thank u sir, when consumption, enrolment or registration stats are used... the north is not there. Check states with largest taxpayer base, even PAYE is enough. Check states with highest disco consumer base. Check states with highest number of phone and Internet users. They're just grasping at straw. |

tactius:Let us start from the beginning WHICH ELECTION has the North won You wrote that long epistle based on Falsehood Just mention ONE election thet the North won? The Truthe is the so called North has not contested election against the so called South So the idea of North WINNING any election is a fallacy In 1979 the only election that even came close to that scenario. Shehu Shagari could not even win Kano State which was then Jigawa of today combined with Kano and had to get a magomago 12 2/3 judgment to clinch presidency So please stop propagating this myth of North winning elections Which election? |
| Re: Is Population Of The Northern A Reality Or A Fraud? by aribisala0(m): 10:02am On Apr 25, 2019 |
The "North" is about 3 times the size of the "South" The other thing is that the "North" in Nigeria is not geographical e.g. Oyo state is more geographically north than Benue and Kogi. What no one tries to explain is how or why Nigeria is different from all our neighbours or the rest of Africa. Geographically Oyo ,Benue,Taraba,Kogi and Nassarawa are in the South Why is Most of West Africa's population in Nigeria? Instead of explain inter Nigerian population variations Explain the conundrum of Nigeria's population as a whole compareed to the rest of West |

Although population figures in Nigeria are manipulated, I think northern Nigeria has a larger population. States with the highest birth rates are still in northern Nigeria. If poverty and illiteracy weren't such a huge problem, we wouldn't be worried ordinarily. |

olatunyemi:Hehehehe ![]() And you think the core muslim north will sit by jejely and watch as you bring in 'electronic counting' that will give a true representation of our population and put sand for their garri? You didn't see how they used mago-mago to avoid signing the electoral bill in to law that would have given legal backing to electronic voting/counting/transmission-of-results....which is kinda similar to what you're suggesting for a accurate census? Don't you see how they're shouting that any figures electronically transmitted to INECs server are not admissible in court because Buhari didn't sign the electoral bill in to law, hence those figures Atiku/PDP are touting must be the ones they saw in their drug-induced delirium? They got it all figured out long before, while naive southerners like you and i didn't even have a clue! Bros, these people are very cunning and they always plan ahead! ![]() |

| Re: Is Population Of The Northern A Reality Or A Fraud? by Nobody: 11:18am On Apr 25, 2019 |
aribisala0:Well, my point is, any region wanting to win elections better make alliances across the regions. That is how the 'North' in the person of Buhari recently (and Shagari in 1979)...have been winning elections and that is how Southerners like Obasanjo won in 2003, and 1999. Sitting down here and grumbling about how many people they really are in the North and South gets you nowhere. It is like how the American left grumbles about the people who voted for trump....and even wishes that they could 'separate from them' forgetting that most of the people who voted for trump could have voted for them...but thanks to the left abandoining them...they went for Trump. If we want to win in 2023....Southerners better drop the Biafra//Afonja/.Nymuri/oodua/whatever...and start forming alliances. Start the ahrd work now. Like Buhari...and Obasanjo (both of whom I don't like)...did. |
