The Average Nigerian Business Pays 48 Taxes - Tony Elumelu by nairalaila: 5:20am On Apr 26, 2019
Tony Elumelu, Chairman and founder of Heirs Holdings has revealed that the average Nigerian business pays 48 taxes. The UBA Chairman who decried the plight of the average Nigerian entrepreneur, saying that an average business was a local government authority providing his own electricity, water and waste disposal method, called for a far-reaching tax reforms and an urgent need to pass the executive tax bill.

Tony Elumelu who revealed that the average Nigerian business pays 48 taxes while delivering a keynote address at the 21st annual tax conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria on Thursday, added that the government should make life easier for Small and Medium Enterprises by creating favourable tax policies that will support them. He called on the government to eliminate the regime of multiple taxation.

He said, “Until there is a reduction in what SMEs pay as tax, elimination of multiple taxation, the abolition of minimum income tax and excess dividend tax, it will be difficult for us to attract investors into this country, and it will be difficult for us to retain the ones already in the country. It will be difficult for us to mobilise our SMEs to help create employment that we need so much in this country. The average number of taxes businesses pay in Nigeria is 48, compared to 33 in other sub-Saharan countries. In Hong Kong, it’s just three. Multiple taxation remains a significant burden for SMEs and corporates operating in the country."

Uba get hope now, at least they have reached the stage where anybody can't just wake up and harass them.

Apart from the things he listed above let me add more, if the road you site your business is bad, instead of the community leader to lobby the government and request that they fix the road, instead they will fine all the businesses in the area. Imagine paying tax and still paying money for road.

You have to provide your own security cause police is almost useless.

If a community head dies and they want to do a burial they can wake up and say let everybody contribute.

If light spoil you contribute.

If community youths want do meeting they can just declare that no business should open then fine you or destroy your goods for opening causing you loss.

The list goes on and on

After all that, agberos from Local government and communities will still come to collect illegal ones from SMEs business owners. This is very common in Port Harcourt. In conclusion, in this part of the country business owners only work for the government and host communities

It is not easy running a registered business in Nigeria.
It is no child's play. From getting registered to applying for Tax to getting a Corporate Current Account to running around for clients to praying that power from PHCN comes.

Then I will make it and one Police will come and ask me what I do for a living?? Thunder will fire us together that day!!! undecided

Bus drivers own worst. This Agbaro go collect for idumota bus stop, another go collect for Nkakpi bus stop. In 24hrs Drivers will be spending roughly #3000 to this agboro that is not accountable for.

Tony Elumelu should tell us what and what taxes he’s referring to.

Except he’s using the wrong word. Maybe charges or fees but the word tax is wrong. This is the problem with this country. You want to complain of something, you’re using the wrong word to address it. The government will come out now and deny that there’s nothing like 48 taxes. If he had used the word “charges”, any nonentity will understand and will be hard for a dubious politician to dodge it.

I’m into account, finance and taxation before you come here and quote me.

I laugh when someone here was saying so long you pay your tax....

Another one saying.. Nigerians don't pay tax.

I always laugh at such moronic ignominy.

What entrepreneurs pass through in Nigeria to survive in their business environment is worth getting an award for.

We pay for everything and government provides none
We are taxed indiscriminately from traders permit, business permit, signpost permit, council permit, development levy, tenament rate, land use rate.....

In Nigeria you buy your transformer, electric cables, poles and pay electricity distributors fees to connect you, you pay for servicing and repairs. You provide Your Own community security, you fix the roads when bad, construct drainage to control Flood, provide Your Own water......

What have you done for me lately, Mr. Taxman?

The boy said it all and that is the truth. Come to the local government level, businesses are meant to pay all kind of lavy from refuse disposal, security levy, local government this and that, development lavy, infrastructure levy, this anx this.

Yet no water, no light, business owners find ways to dispose their refuse, they hire their own security..
If you want to find the truth of this visit small business unit existing inside the market.
Different people coming for different taxes.

When we say government it does not have to do with buhari's federal government but as the president he has to champion and push the bill to be pass so as to save businesses from dying.

You are not saying taxes are not to much, yet you say my analysis is wrong. Tell me whose duty it is to provide security and basic amenities such as electricity and water supply to both businesses and the citizenry?.

I am sure you've never done any serious business to know that the probability of a business succeeding in the Nigerian environment is ridiculously low.

No wonder Michelin and Dunlop left Nigeria for Ghana. Our textile industries are in comatose. The biggest battery factory in West Africa is moribund....

Defending a failed Government doesn't make it better: it only maintains status quo.

That is the spill over effect from the one paid to government... The cost of all those unnecessary taxes are most times borne by the final consumer of such goods or services.

What's the difference between taxes and charges if not semantics, loosely speaking.

Money still leaves your pocket in both and that's what matters...
