Iamgrey5: Nigeria's growth rate is pathethic. What matters is not size of the economy but per capita income. Nigeria's per capita income is only $2,000 which means the country can easily grow by 8% yearly over the next 10 years easily with the right policies It is when your per capita income is like $50,000 that a growth rate like 2% is okay. America per capita income is over $50,000 and it grew by 2.9% last year which was quite good. China, despite having over a billion people grew on an average of 9% over 20 years. Now that it's per capita income is about $8,000, growth has slowed to like 6% which is quite good at that level. India with over a billion people us growing by 7%. It's per capita incone is lower than ours Nigeria should easily be doing 8% by now. Even the average of 6% during PDP was not good enough. 3 Likes 1 Share |

grandstar:Nigeria highest growth rate was 6% average even during when the the GDP was grossly underestimated before it was rebased. Never mind that the majority of our GDP growth comes from one resource which is crude oil a primary resource which is highly volatile. South Africa another country on the continent with better infrastructures and huge potential for growth only managed 2% average for the past decade. Thus, What miracles were you expecting anyone to perform? Even the likes of China struggled with low growth for a while despite its obvious attempts to industrialize. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Ikpongiton:Senseless analogy, the United States has not grown more than 3% in each of the last 5 years, but that hasn't stopped them from been the numero uno aid donor in the world by an unimaginable margin. It isn't President Buhari's fault that Nigeria is a rich country, the GDP of all those countries combined is not a fraction of Nigeria's GDP. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Iamgrey5:Don't mind these blind puppets blaming the Government, are they not aware that they are the Government, they have refused to be innovative, ask them what value they added to the GDP they are complaining about? The people that added to the GDP of Nigeria are enjoying their benefits,it's the lazy ones that brought no value whatsoever, that actually brought the GDP down, that are shouting blue murder. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Iamgrey5: South Africas poor growth is due to many factors It has rigid labour laws that keep the unemployment rate high. It has also refused to privatise any company and it is also quite bureaucratic. When did China suffer from poor growth rate? The majority of the growth rate wasn't simply due to crude oil. The pro-market policies which the pre-Buhari governments followed waa the major fuel for growth. If Buhari was in charge of the economy from 1999-2015, I'm sure growth would never have exceeded 3%. 2 Likes |

grandstar:China suffered low growth rate in the 80s before its double digits growth rate of the 90s and early 20s It was the hard work of Chairman Mao that Hu Jin Tau leveraged upon to transform China to the second largest economy in the world before handing power over to the next generation. Nigerian economic growth has been very artificial because it's only led by steady increase in prices of our major export over the years which is crude oil. Even as that, the growth wasn't transformed to economic development as majority of the infrastructural facilities were neglected by the previous administrations. @ South Africa. South Africa is one the few countries in Africa led by capitalist. The government of South Africa only refused to privatise utility companies becauset the economist in that country feared that it might become an avenue to shift capital out of the country. They are not wrong tho because Nigeria is perfect example of a country affected by such scenerio. |

Buhari is a colossal failure. Those supporting buhari are all victims of Stockholm syndrome- a confused mental and psychological state where the captive begins to celebrate his oppressor, and the captive chooses bondage instead of freedom. Some Stockholm syndrome victims on this platform have attempted to justify this failure by comparing Nigeria to UK and US growth rate. I wish to educate those captives that Nigeria is not a developed country yet, hence, she is expected to post higher growth rates that are far above US and the UK, which are matured and developed economies. Sadly, bad governance orchestrated by buhari has grounded our economy and made growth to stagnate to1.9 to 2.5 %. Remember that our population growth is 2.6% annually. So any growth below or even equal to 2.6% is a disaster that would breed mass poverty and misery. Things will keep getting harder as it is now. More Nigerians will suffer and go to bed hungry if this abysmal growth rate continues. I know that as for me and my family, our God will exempt us from this calamity because we never supported buhari. We are not part of the wicked illiterate masses that have foisted this great evil called buhari on themselves. 3 Likes |

martineverest:You are being smart by half and it is unfortunate. 3 billion dollars in ivory coast would make far more impact there than 10 billion dollars in Nigeria due to the vast difference in population. That is why we need double digit growth to make significant impact. If ivory coast is getting 3 billion dollars, we should be getting 10-20 billion to make the same level of impact. I am sure you know this , but you are trying to deceive the naive here with absolute figures. 2 Likes |

martineverest:The problem with Developed countries say, USA is Economic Growth and the problem with Developing countries say, Nigeria is Economic Development. The GDP growth rate tells us the phase an economy belongs in a typical business cycle. The Nigeria GDP growth rate of 1.9% implies that growth is positive but not fastest. |

Sad tale of economic mismanagement and a paucity of real ideas. Just a tax and spend regime. The TSA should be reviewed and government let its funds through commercial banks once more to stimulate the economy. The private sector can better manage growth. 2 Likes |

rexwalters: All governments round the world are responsible for economic growth so this one cannot be an exception. Governments rise and fall on economic performance so don't justify mediocrity. The problem this government has is in its origins. This crazy narrative that 'corruption' was the sole reason Nigeria was backward. I argued severally that productivity viz our population was a problem. This is proven today with the alarming rate of external borrowing going on presently which should concern you because there is nothing to repay those loans with. Nigeria is like a man running three jobs but has lost one while his wife is expecting and he has to go borrowing to make ends meet. It is a critical situation that only additional income can address. FDI is no more coming in at the rate it was some six, seven years ago and the effects are only now being felt. Better brace for impact. |
