Welcome to department of social work unilorin where we professionalise humanitarian services.
Social work is a profession that concerns itself with helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance their individual social functioning and collective well-being. Social workers practice their profession in different settings such as mental health and substance abuse, medical setting, industries, military setting, family and social welfare, child protection and adoption etc.
Social work is a highly respected and marketable discipline in the developed world but still emerging in Nigeria which is why Department of Social Work, University of Ilorin chapter, is creating this platform to showcase what the Department is doing to help our communities. The platform also allows professional social workers share their wealth of experience on what they've been doing over the years while running their NGOs or while working with different agencies (public and private).
This thread would also serve as a platform where students of social work all over Nigeria can share the knowledge they have acquired during the course of their fieldwork placement and for others who might be interested in getting educated and inclined with the helping profession.

Indeed, the need for social work profession awareness is very pivotal because Nigeria is constantly bedeviled by dynamic problems. I am convinced that social workers are "the new answers" because they have the necessary tools to ratify biopsychosocial problems( biological, psychological and social).

This is such a prolific forum. I am extremely eager to learn and partake in confrontational discussions and cohort group study of disadvantaged persons in our contemporary world through this forum.

Valentine's day is the day people show affection to their loved ones by sending them cards and exchanging gifts, usually during this celebrations most people do not remember those who are less privileged this is why some student social workers take it upon themselves to celebrate this day with the kids at an orphanage home in order to make them know that they're in our thoughts...

Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Mental illnesses are associated with distress and/or problems in functioning in social, work or family activities. About 20 million Nigerians suffer from mental illness, despite the fact that mental health is a public health challenge in Nigeria, it suffers serious neglect. The level of awareness of the Nigerian public on mental health issues is very poor and the misconceptions regarding mental health have continued to persist.

Student social workers who had their fieldwork placement in this setting worked as part of an interdisciplinary team in order to help provide adequate care for the mentally challenged patients. They also provided respite care for the families of the patients in order to help mitigate the effects of stigmatization.

Here is a picture of the department's head on a supervisory visit at a traditional mental health facility where some of my colleagues had their fieldwork placement.

Okay nice thread. Just a quick question though

Which one is paramount or should I say is more important between the general social work core values and the agency's code of ethics?

I mean as an employee under an agency, which should you take as your practice guide especially when their is a conflict between the agency's code of ethics and the general social work practice

an agency's code of ethics is bound to supercede social work core values. Although, every agency puts its work force into consideration when determining its guidelines to ethics

Many a time there's usually a Nexus between the agency's code and the profession's core values, in cases of a conflict I believe the core values should supercede since it reflects the level of professionalism every social worker should inculcate...

Good to be here, Social Work is a diverse profession with various ethics application. Been a counseling and guidance professor you are a partial Social worker, It entails all profession to be a Social Worker in which Social Work have is discplines in Counseling.

According to The NASW (1973) defines social work as "The professional activity of helping individuals, families, groups or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning or creating societal conditions favorable to that goal.

The following definition was approved by the IFSW General Meeting and the IASSW General Assembly in July 2014:

Global Definition of the Social Work Profession
“Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work. Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous knowledge, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing.

KNOWLEDGE
Social work is both interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary, and draws on a wide array of scientific theories and research. ‘Science’ is understood in this context in its most basic meaning as ‘knowledge’. Social work draws on its own constantly developing theoretical foundation and research, as well as theories from other human sciences, including but not limited to community development, social pedagogy, administration, anthropology, ecology, economics, education, management, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, public health, and sociology. The uniqueness of social work research and theories is that they are applied and emancipatory. Much of social work research and theory is co-constructed with service users in an interactive, dialogic process and therefore informed by specific practice environments.

Sharing these information is to sensitized on what Social Work entails. People whom can fit in to these practice of Social Work are called Social Worker.

According to (Ncbi) Nigeria has the highest absolute number of female genital mutilation (FGM) worldwide, accounting for about one-quarter of the estimated 115–130 million circumcised women in the world.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as all procedures which involve partial or total removal of the external female Instruments and/or injury to the female genital organs, whether for cultural or any other non-therapeutic reasons.
Some of my colleagues who had their practicum at Olive community took it upon themselves to educate some selected communities on the dangers of (FGM)

Members of staff of department of Social Work, University of Ilorin making a token donation of food items to Olorunda traditional psychiatry home in illusion. The man in Ankara is the one in charge of the facility. As of the 18th April 2019 the facility had a total of 75 patients higher than most modern facilities but the condition they live is appalling. The ministry of women affairs, Kwara state is aware of the activities of the home, in fact they have a collaboration. Though his method is devoid of science, he is getting results, which is paramount. The facility needs help...

The social worker's day should be more than just one day in my opinion.

It should worker's week not worker's day.

A week of rest in a year is not too much in addition to the few holidays but unfortunately the system is not stable enough neither is it wired technologically or remotely.

I believe one of the problems we have as individuals in this country is the believe that nothing in the country works properly. I also had this mindset prior to me using the Nigerian post office but I found out that I was wrong. Yes the profession still needs a lot of fine tuning and all because a lot of people parading themselves as social workers haven't undergone a lot of training but you can go to any family social service office in Lagos to see the good work social workers there do every single day and I believe the pictorial evidences up there are proofs of what we students have done...

Social Working is an important knowledge every Nigerian should learn. No matter your current state you can be a social worker. At Royal slim tea will make sure distributors earn more and live good. We think well for those who work with us and help them settle for the best. Imagine earning 50k-100k as a distributor monthly. Royal Slim Tea earn less just to make distributors comfortable. That's how we display our social work to Nigerians. No qualification required too..
