The merit/demerit of Private/Public insurance by Cindino20

For me private insurance is a bad idea....just get use to the idea of contribution...I ve been contributing for 18mths and barely visit the hospital....Dont fall for the private insurance trap.

Using govt health insurance u pay abt 80 euros a mth...if u re using private it starts with abt 35 or so and increase with time....Nothin is certain in life...u never can tell u may fall sick and need urgent medical care.....most private health insurance dont cover u fully.you dont want to start worryin abt when you can visit the hospital.

So let me paint u a scenario....you switch to private and save 40 euros a mth in a yr thats 480 euros in 2 yrs 960 euros ....we hope nothin goes wrong...but if along the line something goes wrong...u will need medical care (nothin is certain) ur private health insurance is nt a full cover u may ve to pay some of the bills...baba the bills nor nice.......thats if u ve the money at the moment...if u re broke...it becomes a debt.

My frnd in NRW use to tell me a story of a young chap who left Aok only for him to sustain an injury when playin football 3mths later .......he needed urgent surgery....surgery was done....his insurance was nt full cover...he got a bill of abt 4k euros....Till date my frnd tells me he is still tryin to pay that money.

So many pple ve ugly experiences with private insurance.....I ve heard of a case where the private insurance told the person that any surgery or major treament done within 3mths of joinin6 them will nt be paid by them.even if u re above 30 (then u pay 160 euros for govt insurance...its still a bad idea to go private)

As Nigerians the whole idea of a contributory system is still new to some of us....but to be honest its d best for u now...mind u 80 euros is a discount price for students.

Dont try to save money at the expense of ur own health

Some company will nt employ u with private insurance....eg.Amazon Rheinberg.

In summary private health insurance is penny wise pounds foolish.

All the best.

Things to take note of by Cindino20

Another thing new students shld watch out for is the Rundfundbeitrag( Tv licence) The legality of this is nt up for question ...it has been ruled on by courts of competent jurisdiction.

According to the rule every adult in Germany is expected to contribute abt 17 euros a mth for this... the only exemption if ur income is low or u get Bafög.

So for those of u who reisde in a WG...Its actually easy.....if one person us paying in your flat ...you dont need to pay ..all you need to do is when u recieve the first letter just ask the person to write a reply for you and include you on their bill (same thing applies to those livin in private housing).

But if you reisde alone in an apartment...you ce to pay abt 54 euros every 3 mths...please do not allow this money to accumulate......I made same mistake and now ve abt 300 euros to pay grin

If you plan to reside here after studies dont allow this money to accumulate....you will ve to pay it someday.

I will nt advise anyone to gv them their account details of direct debit...just pay and use ur beitrag number fas reference.

All the best.

Eke40seven view on private insurance

Don't think about Private, no try am at all. I have seen and i'm a witness to the predicaments they can cause.

Actually, what we are referring to as "private insurance" are actually "travel and health insurance". These are not real german "private insurance" because as students we can't even afford private insurance. Its for high income earners and they are very expensive.
There is a whole world of difference between "private insurance" and a "private travel and health insurance". The ones the students normally use is the latter. All from Mawista to union (Hanse Merkur), care concept, etc, all na same and that's why they are "cheap".

Note that hospital bills for here no be play play. When you go to a hospital with these insurance papers (dem no dey give card) Most big hospitals won't accept it, instead they Will send the bills to you and these insurance companies have a reputation of not covering all the bills and if unfortunately the illness that promted your hospital visit was a preexisting illness, na debt you don enter so because they won't cover it.

Again, hospitals here will charge you their highest rate if you use these type of insurance.

Again, hospitals here will charge you their highest rate if you use these type of insurance.

Finally, no matter what you do, dont joke with that 3 months travel and health insurance you get from IGI.

As my nairaland punster will say, "A ward is enough for the whys" cheesy

Please i know some people are very occupied but try to adjust your schedule, even if na just 30 lesson everyday.

They say a good man learns from his mistakes but a wise man learns from the mistakes of others. I wanted to apply for winter 2019 but after reading this thread and the student visa thread thoroughly I understood that if you want to succeed in DE, you have to plan thoroughly. So now I've pushed back my application to summer 2020 so I can write at least A2 here in Naija. It seems so far away but I know it'll surely be worth it.
My advice to my fellow aspirants: Patience is a virtue and knowledge is power.

Wow.. That's a sacrifice, a huge one cos i don't think there is anybody that can do that.

It's good to plan ahead before embarking on a journey to new life.. I wish you success in your endeavors Sis

If you know that you dont have anybody to send money to you when your 8000€ finishes try all your best to secure admission in a city where you can get job, e.g Berlin,Munich, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Bremen,Frankfurt,Bonn, etc, infact dont go to a school that is located in a village like europa university frankfurt(order) in eastern germany, Freiburg, erfurt, postdam etc.

You can work here, like myself i started working after 1month with mercedes, be ready to do hard job, cleaning job, if you know how to speak German then everything will be easy for you, you will be the one to select job but mostly manual jobs. If you cannot speak German, you can also get a job, in average big cities, it not difficult to get a student job of 450€ per month.

Try to get student accommodation in your school because it goes for 200 to 250€ in most unis, outside rent a shared appartment outside the student accomodation ranges from 270 to 450€ depending on the city you living e.g Hamburg and munich may not have room that less than 300€ per month but smaller city like Bremen will have from 270€. You can after paying house rent and insurance your student working of 450€ is finished then you use your block account maybe 100€ from it to feed for a month. This is reason why somebody that is having it in mind to become overnight rich when he comes to Germany while studying have to have a rethink because definitely it is not going to be easy hustling through out and going to school with German system of education where the work load of exercises every week is as big as mountain.

In addition by Gcapable

Don't go to a village in any part of Germany. Kleve is a village in the North, but people there can tell you how it is.... you have to travel to köln or dusseldorf to get work. People in postdam, frankfurter oder and Cottbus get job in berlin but the travel time is killing.

It's not about East, South, West or North. If your sending your blocked account money back home or you are using sponsorship, let the big or relatively big cities be your target. Please and please don't go to a place with 50k population because it's in the west or south.... you go cry eeeewwweeee. No matter how bad it is in a big city, you will always find something to do to sustain you.

For example in Berlin,

1. You get 2 years straight residency no need to get another 8k for the 2nd year

2. Relative to other big cities in Germany, accomodation/social life is cheap here, which means you can save more than someone in Munich for example

3. You can earn up to 950/month b4 u start paying tax. These and many more are advantages of been in a big city.

He who has ear let him hear, do not fall for the north, West, south or east theory.

Eke40seven added his blueprint as well wink

Berlin is the best city to study in Germany. Very fantastic schools at the very top, multicultural city, good job opportunities and comparably affordable when compared to Munich and a far better semester ticket than the one in Munich. Although things are changing in terms of rent these past few years as rent is going up fast in Berlin

Guys, whenever you are searching for schools, look for the ones in the big cities.

Düsseldorf, Hamburg (one of the best student cities)Stuttgart,Munich,Frankfurt,Duisburg,Essen,Bonn,Cologne,Bremen,Dortmond,Hanover,Bochum,Munster, Augsburg, Berlin and Leipzig

Kleve is a no go area if you want to send money back home to repay the debt you owed

A word is enough smiley

Cahnellven view on Dresden

Dresden is a nice city for work and study. Though it is in the east, it can easily give most western cities a run for their money in terms of employment opportunities

.It is the hub of silicon Saxony ( an association of about 300 registered companies in microelectronics, nanotechnology and related sectors) and many others .

It is arguably the most beautiful city in Germany hence its nickname "Florence on the Elbe",despite suffering untold destruction during the second world war. Rent and food is cheap too in comparison to cities in the west and north.

It is less than two hours train ride from Leipzig, berlin and Prague.
If you'll be studying at the technische Universität Dresden, then you're lucky to be in an Elite Germany university .
Just arm yourself with adequate proficiency in German and your stay will be worthwhile

Beware of dickheads though..

Goethe institute is there for those that have the money to learn it there and if you happen to be like me (poorest guy grin), you can learn by yourself. I know somebody here on nairaland who learnt Hwagui to the level of fluency before travelling to South Korea for studies. If he can do it, you can do it.

Hwagui is by far more difficult than German. Instead of studying the grammar rules and sentence structure, you can start memorizing the useful phrases. I think its faster that way.

@Hadampson, I'm really impressed and challenged by your selflessness. I hope you are also like this in the real world - selflessly helping people? You are really awesome! How I wish I have enough money to be of help with your BA!!!

Do you mind if I send you a token (N1,000) for recharge card for data? I can either send you recharge card or transfer the money.

If my offer is not too small for you, please get back to me with your preferred option.

Useful post from babanila

North Rhine Westphalia is a very big region with the highest population in Germany and lots of industries. It is a perfect place for engineering students to begin their career and they have some of the most hospitable people you could meet in Germany.

The state of Hesse has lots of industries too, quite notably, the Industrie Park situated in Frankfurt (it's as big as a small village in Nigeria) and would be the dream of any body who studied Chemical Engineering since all the companies situated there are the some of the biggest Chemical Companies in the world. Think BASF, BAYER, SANOFI, CLARIANT and so on. Other than that, Frankfurt is a purely banking and Stock exchange city with gigantic banking buildings.

Berlin does not offer much in terms of industries. It is a town where politicians, secretaries and assistants thrive. Think Abuja.

Other than that, the state of Hamburg is also another huge industrial region with lots of importing and exporting going on.

Bavaria is good (don't know much about it) but I heard that the people dwelling there are some of the most unpleasant people to meet. They even look down on other Germans and have some of the most effed up accent you can come across in Germany. Unfortunately they have some of the best looking german girls grin
