Well, I don't trust employment statistics from Nigeria, whether NBS or whatever government-financed independent agency. You see, the reasoning behind it is that Nigeria doesn't have a working national database yet and our borders remain porous.

While there are other factors that are likely to affect employment stats in a state/country, I think those two remain the most critical of them all.

If NBS publishes IGR and federal allocation figures, I believe it 100% because those figures are verifiable and accountable.

But you see unemployment rate and all the related stats, they're mere assumptions because we don't even know our actual population in Nigeria.

The only verifiable stats from NBC are:
IGR of each state
Number of criminal cases recorded by the police yearly ( state of security)

The Stats that are very untrue and not verifiable:
Total population per state
Poverty rate
Unemployment rate
Out of school children stats
etc
Those one are just stupid guess work.

Apart from increase in IGR by 117% that saw Imo move from 4th to highest income generator in Southeast in 2018, Imo also moved to 3rd position behind only Lagos and Rivers in job creation. This means the next Governor has a lot of work to do to sustain these gains or we experience recession like Nigeria of 2015.

A recently released report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has shown that 740,146 jobs were added between July 2017 and June 2018.

According to the Q3 2018 Labor Force Statistics (unemployment & underemployment by state) rep released on Friday, Akwa Ibom reported the highest unemployment rate at 37.7%.

As at December 2018, a total of 20.9 million Nigerians were reported to be unemployed.

“Akwa Ibom state reported the highest unemployment rate (37.7%), followed by Rivers State with (36.4%), Bayelsa state (32.6%), Abia (31.6%) and Borno state (31.4%),” the report read.

“The top 5 states with the highest unemployed population are Rivers (1,673,991), Akwa Ibom (1,357,754), Kano (1,257,130), Lagos (1,088,352) and Kaduna with (940,480).

“Among these 5 states with the highest unemployed population, Lagos state reported the lowest rate of 14.6% during the reference quarter.”

Only nine states were able to reduce unemployment and underemployment rates between the third quarter of 2017 and the corresponding quarter in 2018. These states were listed as Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Kogi, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ondo and Rivers.

The six states that recorded the highest gains in net full-time employment between Q3 2017 and Q2 2018 include Lagos adding 740,146 net full-time jobs, Rivers (235,438), Imo(197,147), Ondo (142,514), Enugu (122,333) and Kaduna (118,929).

The reason for high percentage increase in imo IGR is because of their abysmally low 6billion IGR in 2017. With 14 billion for 2018 there is no way imo can emerge highest in the east.
Our anambala brothers should come and see how enugu and imo are leading in reduction of unemployment

To buy Owerri people to support his Third term effort made Okorocha lavish our money on Owerri for eight years.

If you don't want trucks to ply a road, just one rail over the road with a caution sign and the job is done.

No reasonable governor will litter the road with poles just to prevent motorists from using the road.

I was even expecting more intelligent response like this type of light is more beautiful than the ones we are used to in Nigeria.

It's difficult for Nigeria's government to maintain the usual one-pole streetlights let alone when there are three pillars that suspend just one light.

Come back in five years' time and read your comment...that's when you will understand what I meant when I said this type of streetlight is completely unnecessarily because they will be lying in ruins.

Okorocha Relocates Imo State Polytechnic

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has announced the immediate relocation of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, to Ehime Mbano Local Government Area.

Okorocha, in a statement issued in Owerri by his chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said the relocation came after the elevation of the polytechnic to Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Science by the National Universities Commission.

Okorocha said that the relocated polytechnic would have campuses at the site of Ahiara Polytechnic, Ahiara; and another campus at the site of the Imo State University of Medical Sciences pending their recognition by the NUC.

The statement reads in part, “Following the establishment of Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences on the premises of the Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, with campus at Aboh/Ngor Okpala, the Imo State Polytechnic is hereby relocated to Ehime Mbano with a campus at the site of Ahiara Polytechnic, Ahiara; and another campus at the site of the Imo State University of Medical Sciences, pending their recognition.”

“The Imo State Polytechnic campus, Orlu, is named Bishop Shanahan Polytechnic, Orlu, with a campus at the site of Mbonu Ojike Polytechnic, Arondizuogu.”

I don't like seeing us waste scarce resources on what the federal gov't claims is their own sphere of influence and responsibility! If we had state police then i can understand, but why should we spend the money we don't have buying equipment and building offices for a institution the constitution says belongs on the exclusive list? They're not even talking of changing the sharing formula to decrease what the centre gets in view of the fact the federal gov't presence is near non-existent in the states!

The way Owerri has been stripped of vegetation that can help improve its ambience and suck up carbon dioxide is very worrying! You see some pics of Owerri and you thing you're looking at a shot of Dutse or Kano! You know Sokoto has more trees than Owerri!

Much as I get the point you raised, I beg to differ.
You see, security is a sensitive issue in governance. As a matter of fact, it is the most important responsibility of government. We all know that Nigeria's police not only have issue of poor funding, they also struggle with poor working conditions.
If the level of criminality in Imo State rockets, everyone will be shouting Rochas up and down.
Although it's federal police, they are guarding Imo people.
Therefore, a need exists to equip the police, so that they can give Imolites the best.
This project, regardless of how anyone sees it, is commendable.
Lest I forget, when they start using this office complex, it will boost small scale businesses within the axis.

Owerri is having a silent revolution in Real estate and overall city development. Kudos to those who are investing in that city. In 10 years time, it will be a destination for international tourists.

Impressive stuff! This is all self-effort...not waiting for a gov't job that will give you the chance to steal money!

If they could just do up the roads and plant some greenery, the place would be perfect.

When mapping out these new areas, they should also consider having open spaces for parks and recreation areas where families can stroll down to and relax under the trees or play with the kids on swings and slides!

My Brother some of our igbo brothers are worse than our enemies , i have seen how some people destroy threads on Imo , Enugu and Anambra for very petty and selfish reasons, so much childishness , pettiness and foolishness on the side of these folks , they have poisoned and destroyed meaningful threads , i still wonder what their original motives are.
