Middle Class In Nigeria- Is It Still In Existence? by Teewhy2: 9:39am On May 01, 2019
Guys, Happy workers day.
I would like us to make this as interactive as it can, Lets ask ourselves this question
Is there Middle class in Nigeria again?
for some of us that who like to know what the middle class is, this is a social group between the upper and working classes, including professional and business people and their families.
So do we still have this group in Nigeria, Many of us know that the rate of unemployment is on the rise in the country and out of the ones that are employed statistics shows that 80% are under employed, that is to say only 20% of this people are gainfully employed.
In my own opinion ( you can share yours in the comment section) I want to believe that 5% are in the rich class maybe around 10% in the Middle class and the remaining 85% are poor, forget all these cars you see people driving around, how many of them can fill up the their gas to the brim and not feel it in their pocket, a lot of people living in the island before has started moving to mainland{ Note not to GRA on mainland} to rent apartment and the ones not moving to the mainland are moving to the outskirt towards Epe. the people on the mainland are moving to other neighbouring state and claiming second Lagos, or Lagos extension.

I saw in a newspaper article the below and am shocked.

Interestingly, in other West African countries which haven’t had the Nigerian experience of military rule (Senegal and Ivory Coast, for example), the middle class lives a life that only few could dream of in Nigeria. It isn’t strange in such countries to find individuals buying yoghuts, meats and hams which in Nigeria are reserved for a small elite. In fact, one is often shocked by how affordable consumer goods are in such countries, in comparison to Nigeria where producers of any event or merchandise prioritise luxury items over affordability and mass consumption.

This is to say some other west african countries are living a more quality life than most nigerians, I want to believe in most part of the world where people where being are important the middle class are like 80% of the population.
so the question is what is the government doing to bring people out of poverty in the country.

In Nigeria, all you want is money.

The consequence of that is that, you either have it, a lot, or you don't have it at all.

Contentment is alien to the Nigerian.

Many "rich" people in Nigeria are actually middle class if you look closely.
Outside that, you have poverty all-round as the norm.

That is true, if you look at the buying power of most of these people( "rich" ) and compare it with their counterparts abroad you will see that maybe the only rich people are not more than 2 percent while the others are glorified middle class, and out of these 2%, 1.5% are actually politicians or head of government parastatals.

Presently, middle class has vanished into thin air. It's either you are rich or you are poor.

Afterall, Nigeria is the poverty capital of the world

No country can grow without large percentage of their percentage as middleclass. Infact the percentage of middle class is one of the most effective way to measure a country development. Because Govt responsibilites is to create middle class, not billionaire.
Nigeria is a country that her yesterday is better than today. So the middleclass is becoming extinct. For every 100,000 middleclass, one becomes a millionaire/billionaire while other 99,999 fall down into poverty. This is the reality of the country.
Its really a sad case. The country is getting worse....

Capitalism no fit developing country like Nigeria. I always feel socialism makes you grow at a faster pace

There is widening divide between the rich and the poor in Nigeria.

If the middle class exists, then its in a very small percentage. Unfortunately, we lack Data in Nigeria.

I suspect a greater percentage of Nigeria's workforce earns less than N600,000 per anum.

At the upper end, you have folks in energy sector, telecoms and ICT, or freelancers, earning that or more per month.

Now,

You see, this has been my biggest worry with some economic simpletons who call "Buhari a friend of the poor" shocked . Some of APC's economic policies are a living disaster by every metric, if not most.

You cannot improve a country's economy without strategically strengthening the middle class. If you model your economic policy to favor the middle class, you can better control the widening gap between the rich and poor, as a consequence, drive economic growth rapidly.

You need the middle class to advance any society. Otherwise, the rich will get more greedy and the poor will resort to vices and installing people after their kind, like Buhari. So PDP also shares the blame of the disaster we have today.

capital No....and Buhari is not responsible for that because middle class disappeared long before democracy came in1999.
babagida is culpable in its disappearance.

400billionman:

No brother Obasanjo reforms in the Banking and Telecoms sector of 1999 to 2003 brought back the middle class. Even the stock market boom of years earlier than 2008 grew the middle class. Ring tone millionaires were members of the middle class.

I was also a member of the middle class for long under PDP where you fuel your car tank to the brim and use it till it finishes then you refuel it to full again.

You buy drinks, soaps, detergents, milk in cartons. You have every little thing in its abundance yet you are a mere salary earner who does not engage in sharp practices or corruption.

you actually made very valid points. I thought middle class families disappeared in the mid 90s due to the sustained effect of military rules. I know better now.
Thanks.

An early age middle class actress gets promoted to the apex class, isn't that wonderful. Sexual, social, financial and racial stratifications(Class) exist, has always been and would always be. As long as ladder still exist. undecided
