My Experience at UI Center for Environmental Group yesterday 8th of May. PhD Category.
It was not funny. My proposal was heavily critisized . They said my objectives were too much and not achievable within 3 years. They faulted my proposal for not having a research question. They were also not happy that I have not written any paper all this years. For those yet to be interviewed for environmental group, you do not have to go with any hard copy of your proposal, they will read of from their system. Also my Msc PTDF awards was not accepted as an award, they said it is just a letter of notification.Go with your Msc transcript, they requested for mine during the interview. They also asked why I wanted to carry out my research overseas and not in Nigeria. I wish all of us the best.

Any help on how to get to ptdf tower in UI...I'm slated for 10th.... coordinates will be much appreciated if available....thanks
Just get to UI and ask for Petroleum....it's about a 5mins drive from the main gate.

If you aren't driving, take a bike from the main gate to Petroleum. Tell the bike man you are going to the complex for interview; they know where to drop you.

. If you are coming in from Lagos. Stop at Iwo road and take taxi going to Ojoo. Tell the taxi man, you will alight at Agboowo. From there cross over and take bike or taxi to UI. Inside the school gate take bike and tell them you are going to Department of petroleum engineering.

OMG!!! These are the same people that interviewed me. They tore my research apart limb from limb. I walked out of the interview feeling utterly disappointed in myself, as though I hadn't done any work at all in all these months of drafting my proposal.
They insisted I didn't have to travel to the UK since my study site was in Niger Delta. When I tried to explain to them, they asked me what sense there was in taking my samples and then travelling out of the country with them. I said the equipments I required to do my work were limited (here) and that a professor had advised me to travel abroad if I wanted to enjoy this research I had proposed to carry out, they said if I went to IITA Ibadan, I would find the equipments.
I'm just glad I was given the opportunity to gather more experience interview wise. God bless us all.

Shouldn't come as a surprise. The panelist for the PHD are much more prepared and experienced (mostly academic professors) this time. I think PTDF learned a lot from previous years as you could tell right from the new upgraded portal system. However, at the base level, its still going to be a highly subjective experience (determined mostly by your proposal), a handful of luck and some drops of blessing along the way. You may think you were the best at one centre only to be truncated by other candidates in other centres from your state. But hey, there has never been shortage of miracles in Nigeria!

I digress....

My experience was almost similar in UI! Despite being an Alma mater!! In fact I knew one of the Profs on the panel; he taught me in my undergrad days!! The only issue they had with my proposal was the battle of topic! “It could have been this and that” so said they! Alas! There was no point in arguing because it could have been meaningless and more embarrassing! I walked out with mixed feelings only to put my trust in God! However, amidst the topical wahala they still drilled a little on the whole proposal, asking what will be the outcome “for a research that hasn’t be done yet”! I just answered “that’s the essence of the research study” They checked my transcripts for first and second degrees as uploaded already and graded!! I submitted 3 copies of my proposal and they were cross checking with what they had on the application! #TrustinginGod

Thanks for the support received on this platform so far...really appreciate...

No UK for me this year ...maybe next year...

Interviewed at UI... environmental group...we are the back benchers (last day things)...so maybe the experience isn't relevant again...

But only serious question is why do I want ptdf scholarship...why study abroad...

My proposal shot me bad...no direct link with oil and gas industry...so...watch it if you are applying next year ..ensure you try to solve one of the oil and gas problem...

That UI description works perfect....once again. Thanks...

Thanks to everyone for your contribution. Based on the comments here I had to rush to print my transcript at the venue which they actually demanded for when I was called in for my interview. All the proposals I printed and sop was a waste. They didn't ask for it as they had it in their laptop.

UI center environmental group. That said my research has been done before so there is no addition to knowledge. I tried my best to defend it and they insisted on their option. The lady among them just wanted to finish my career. Question upon question. They also mentioned that my references weren't recent and by recent he meant 5yrs till date. They advised me to work on my proposal against next year. I guess I know my fate already.

What can man do than to hope on God.

I wish everyone the very best.

Re: Apply 2019/2020 PTDF Scholarship In France, Germany And UK by Sheddy79(m): 9:20am On May 11, 2019
It all depends on the profile of other candidates from your state of origin, it is a state thing! while 50% might be a top ranking score in state A, It could as well be a disaster in state B! I was astonished when a particular candidate was told by one of the panellist in a particular centre that he is number 57 on the log, the young man almost collapsed when he had that, but was relieved when the second interviewer said; we mean to say 57th nationally, but 2nd in your home (Origin) state. So if the rumour of 3/4 slots per state for UK/GF, depending on the region of origin is anything to go by, it implies that some states scored higher to have placed the candidate on second position in his home state, while 57th nationally. So just pray for your state to have candidates with at least average profile. Wishing you divine success as you expect the shocking news!

Hmm. It's only PTDF that can give you a perfect answer though....

I just feel at the end of everything it is not just the pubs or the awards that really matter(cos some persons have them but they had a "not so good" interview) but what matters is whether you are happy or not after seeing the final list. And it very much depends on the level of competition in your state, maybe your state is one of those highly competitive ones( just like someone earlier mentioned that a state had 16 applicants, last year with very strong profiles, which gave ptdf issues on doing the final selection).

Well, I do believe for you to have made it to the interview stage, you definitely have one thing or the other( be it class of degree or even O level) that must have made you stand out.....

And las las ehn, don't bother yourself just believe in God.

I interviewed at UI with Panel 3.

Those of us for 12pm were delayed for a while before before being attended to. After the accreditation we were arranged in the order we would be ushered into the interview room.

When I entered the room, I greeted the panel (made up of three professors). Then I was asked to sit and state my surname and state of origin. I did. Then one of them had to ask me to spell cause he wasn't familiar with the name. He then requested for all my credentials and asked me to speak briefly (emphasizing not more than two minutes) on why I want to go on this masters program and why PTDF should sponsor me. And I did, making sure I kept to the time.

Then the man I thought to be the lead examiner asked what area of research I intend to embark on. And I explained. He then asked if studies have not already been carried out in the field and I said yes but explained the limitations of previous studies and the gap I choose to address. He then said it seems quite ambitious and I concored. So he expressed doubts about my ability to complete it in the short time of my masters and I explained that it's a study I hope to extend into future study (I.e PhD). He seemed satisfied.

Then the man who was going through my credentials said one of my awards can't be accepted (it was a list of five awards from secondary school). We had a slight argument about it, though I tried to be as humble as possible. He eventually agreed to recognized it as one award cos awards from secondary school are normally not recognized, and I thanked him. This plus my other 3 award made it four. He then asked if I didn't get any awards from my faculty in university so I explained that I didn't. My two publications were also accepted.

He then said I've done my best so all I have to do now is to pray that I'm awarded. I thanked all of them for the opportunity I was given and then I was asked to call in the next candidate.

Trusting God for His favour.

Omo this interview was a potpourri of tales of harsh experiences, esp for PhD candidates, my guy had his shifted from 10th to 9th and when he went for d interview,
I asked him how he went, his first reply "terrible", while making his presentation halfway they just cut him and said he doesn't need sponsorship since he was able to sponsor himself for MSC in UK.
He categorically said he noticed that most of the panelists were somewhat biased towards lecturers since most of them are themselves lecturers.
So for someone working in d oil and gas they blv they've made enough money to be able to sponsor themselves.
He said when they cut him with that comment "a ah you don't need d scholarship na, you can sponsor yourself, or is it partial funding u need?"
He was speechless, for a few seconds, they literally deviated and ended up talking about his job.
Not to forget that lectures have other scholarship programmes which are made specifically for them and PTDF's primary goal is to train for knowledge targeted at benefitting the oil and gas.
Anyways we thank God Sha, all we can say is that what's yours will never pass you by

Sponsored by ptdf. When I got talking with them they all told me same thing its not about the awards and publications or first class but its about how u can successful

ly argue and defend ur proposal and sop.

I could tell from my experience this year, wen I got in touch with the panelists I was so happy that the lead panelist is a core environmentalist meaning I have someone that can comprehend with wateva I av to say in my field, quickly he asked wat research am I plunging into at Manchester, wat skills do I hope to gain and how do I envisage integrating these skills on return. I already contact with the center Leader Center for Atmospheric Studies CAS at the University of Manchester who had drilled me on the aspect of my propose research which is just a fraction of a project he is working on. After I finished responding to the questions, the panelist went try my documents and scored each of them and he told me that he will indicate in his recommendation section that I already have contact at Manchester that will aid my work and my propose research is a rare area and I will be one of very few professionals in Nano science if I decide to go for phd.

Overall my interview was fun and they congratulated me and told me to make sure my documents are well intact before I travelled. That got me shocked.

I never knew there was a comment section by panelist, I believe in as much as we all av al the documents awards and publications etc the panelists recommendations also counts. U can av all the awards and very good class of degree but if ur proposal ain't justifiable even with a high score, their comments on ur propose work might count u out.

I think you just made a good point! I have a background in petroleum engineering, and am going for GLOBAL MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES at UCL, London. At first my interviewer was shocked! he now asked me why going for Management when I already have a background in Petroleum Engineering? when did you graduate? and what have you been doing since then? I responded that haven studied the programs (GMNR) Modules at UCL, I discovered it entails the application of Geological, geophysics, geochemistry and Engineering Processes in converting Natural (raw) materials into finished commodity, which is not limited to oil/gas anyway, secondly, haven also worked with port harcourt refining company as a secretary to the deputy manager, engineering and technical services department, general engineering and project management section, I was saddled with the responsibility of evaluating contract biding documents..........., when I mentioned all of these, the interviewer was able to build a bridge between Petroleum Engineering and my choice course, Management. Before I could finish answering the question, the second interviewer started applauding me. Initially, I taught he was been sarcastic, I wasn't so excited about his applause, for reason been that they had earlier rejected one of my awards. I only became happy when he hit the nail on the head by telling me "Young man you have gotten a great profile! Honestly speaking, I love your profile, you did well, you need not boarder at all, having two publications already at your level that seriously borders on oil and gas, speaks volume to your effort in proffering solution to the short falls in the oil and gas industry"! Just like he said, my two publications were: 1. AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS INTO CORROSION PROBLEMS AT KADUNA REFINERY AND PETROCHEMICALS, USING LOCAL CRUDE OIL BLEND, 2. MODELLING TANKER LOADING AND FIRE WATER RING MAIN SYSTEMS, USING PIPENET SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS, of which I published in an international Journal. The Kaduna Refinery work caught his attention, been that he is from the North, and he almost killed me with questions from that area. However, lets keep hope in God, you can never tell the outcome from other centres. Best regards and wishing all divine success.
