03 Big Daddy Gear Problem by Khalifa99(m): 8:02am On May 08, 2019
I purchase a 2003 totoya carmy toks popularly known as big daddy last year Oct 2018

Few days ago,I just noticed when the car is on motion
It would rev down
And also when it is about to change gear from 1 to 2

And den it was hard for it to move forward unless I floor the gas and also when I put it in Reverse it wont move unless I press the gas very well it would just keep acting slowing even of I press the gas self it would be very slow while reversing

It is so hard to the car to change

So I took the car to my mech
He told me it was my gear and my fuel pump

He change the oil to (Oando-Atf dexron II)

Still yet the car was having problems in changing the gear
So I told him
He said it was because of the oil is still yet to go around the gear
And then he told me I must change the fuel pump for it to be normal I told him I would come the next day
The next day I had the fuel pump changed and it
seems to normal,
The gear was selecting well and I was happy

Only for me to go out in the evening and the car starts revving not wanting to change gear
I managed it till I got to where I could park the car

And got down to check what was wrong

Only for me to start the car and engage it in gear
It wasn't moving forward or backward
I tried checking all the gears non was working

So I called the mech and he came to tow the car

He was then assuring me that it was going to be the gear filter

That all he had to do was to clean the fuel filter

It would go back to normal

Now the mech is telling me I have to change the gear
I don't trust the mech

Am sad and not happy because this is my first car

Please help what can I do

First thing to do is to change your mech..there is no connection between fuel pump and transmission and since he recommended oil change,he ought to have checked filter.i just hope he hasn't ruined your transmission.if I were you,I would how my car away from his workshop and pray never to experience such mech again in my life

unfortunately, when it comes to performance..... a failing fuel pump can give same/similar symptoms as a failing gear box e. g loss of power during acceleration and loss of power during engine stress.

it's the mechanic prerogative to make sure that the faulty part is diagnosed and either rebuilt or changed.
however, special tools are needed to successfully diagnose such issues... our regular mechs don't have these equipments hence they work either by trial and error or by experience of that same or similar issue.

OP u will need to take that vehicle to someone who can fix it, such issues are not diagnosed in proxy u know.... most likely that gear will need a replacement or rebuild..... for starters u bought it toks, did u do a Carfax report?
The oil u used is not recommended.... so that's even a minus for ur vehicle.

u need a pro to fix...

Is rebuilding the gear a Great idea?
And also I have been making researches on how much a 10 pin gear would cost,
It is around 80-90k

And also is it advisable to buy a used gear

A friend of mine dad sells spare part and his dad said he has a 10pin big daddy gear?

Or shd I just buy the toks

Buy toks.
Next time always carry out proper diagnosis before any work is done.

The problem is around your gear, but to take out engine, take car to a place where you have ample frontal space, and do the following with the engine running:

Put 'wedge' in front of tyres
Engage the parking brake
Press and hold down the brake firmly with your left foot.
Put the gear in D
Keep your eyes on the tachometer
Floor the throttle (with your right) for 3 second and let go immediately
Take note of what the tachometer reads during this test.

NOTE: This can only be done if the gear still moves.
