I would say If you think your start-up viable enough and are ready to face a Jungle of ideas and resilient people then come home.

If not, find another means to be in the UK, you don't need marriage to get that done I assume. You seem like a good person, so let the girl and her family rant but you do what is best for you.

We would be praying with you that a good opportunity opens to you In Germany, all hopes for a professional job that you seek can't be lost yet, these IT jobs you speak of can't you apply to have some certification in that field (since you confess they get the real bucks).

if you can do your PhD then return to Nigeria. Opportunities abound for PhD holders in the universities due to recent NUC requirements for lecturers to have a PhD before employment. At least you'd be able to lecture in any university while trying your hands on the biz you want to do

This will serve as a shock absorber while you get reintegrate into the Nigerian society

Returning home is actually the wisest thing to do am talking from experience. Having a steady income as a lecture while navigating the uncertain world of business in Nigeria will help ease things for you

cheers

Take this advice bro...there are opportunities in naija. was doing a job I felt was beneath me abroad. everybody discouraged me from coming back. my african colleagues were feeling untop of the world with the job we were doing working 4Amazon but deep within me I kneew I deserve better...I clenched my teeth and returned to mockery but within 4 months God picked up my call and I'm kinda balling right now. people talking smack about naija are mostly people who have not travelled out and experience the discrimination disrespect associated with being in a foreign land. I came back with an idea for a startup but an international organisation grab me and is refusing to let go...me now telling HR I can't stay much longer because I need to focus on my dream company. for oyibo land who born me to reject offer?

Your orientation is too pessimistic for my liking, in fact your mindset is directly correlated to your predicament. People gave you options of U.K, Canada and you've shot down every suggestion because of your preconceived notions. Let me tell you it is not easy to find or keep professional jobs anywhere, yea you have a degree, SO WHAT? Millions of people have the same degree, millions more have the work experience, so tell me why should THEY PICK YOU OVER THEM? What separates you from the herd? The opportunities you are looking for can be found in germany, U.K or Canada, better leave that mindset that Africans are lowest on the totem pole when it comes to professional jobs, that's pure hogwash! Do you even network? Have you volunteered at organizations? Sometimes it's not the job that matters but getting one foot in the door. You can start at entry level and get promoted easily because of your degree and work ethics. My friend, WAKE UP!

Where are the jobs in Nigeria, a graduate earns 20k as private school teacher here, how will the person live a normal life, it's difficult here except for the rich and those with connections

yes a graduate without the necessary teaching qualification will be paid 20k, i also know graduates with the right qualification teaching in some big private schools and earning good while also taking kids for external lessons

instead of complaining why dont you try to socialise and get that connection..that is what smart people will do

I am a Nigerian in Germany with a German Masters degree. It's quite difficult to get professional jobs in Germany as an African as we are usually the last of the pack. The only luck I ever had was to get internships, internships that takes several months to get and usually only for short periods. The high percentage of Africans even with German Phds doing menial jobs is highly discouraging and depressing. Most are trapped in the race for survival and I can't imagine myself living life like them. I feel I could do better with my skills and education that spreads across Europe's top countries.

I made the decision to return to Nigeria, harness my skills and start up a processing company. At 25 and the sole breadwinner of an extended family, they are asking me to stay put, saying that the Nigerian environment is not good for business (I feel they are only scared of losing out on the goodies they get from me).

Also last year, the family introduced me to a female in the UK, talking about marriage to her. The said lady is a Nigerian within my age range, but born and raised in the UK. Though I have been to the UK severally to see her, I have made no commitments whatsoever as she is not the kind of lady I would marry all things being equal. She and the family have however given me a ultimatum to decide now.

What do you advice?

Your first paragraph is not totally correct, you can't use your industry's experience as a general verdict. I work in Tech and I can tell you that German companies are 'stealing' Nigerian Software Engineers on a daily basis. So what type of Masters did you study? Did you do a feasibility study before embarking on the Masters? Can you pivot to another career? Have you checked the careers in demand in Germany? You need to sit down to figure these things out.

Btw if your girl and your family are giving you an ultimatum on a lifetime decision then it simply means you're not man enough and you need to stamp your authority before you can think about marriage.

Stay in Germany, till You can sort a better country... Australia, Canada even Uk if you can get a job.., little money you get from menial jobs you get could be channeled into trying other countries skilled migration programs.

That extreme urge you have about Coming to Nigeria, is the work of demons, should you come back without the support of your Family, chaiiiiii you would regret regreting it

.

Stay in Germany and look for any online business that you can do to become your own boss instead of looking for work with your damn degree and also never make any mistake to relocate to Naija cool

As A Nigerian, resident in Nigeria. I advice, Don't you ever think of coming back to this place.

Ok, let's say you successfully start up a business, you would have to face power, you will supply atleast 70% of the power you need, and you would still pay electricity agencies a lot for the 30% they would provide.
You would meet a lot of bottle necks, stupid people setting up stupid illegal taxes to enrich themselves, and you must comply, or they'll destroy your goods.
Let's say you overcome the above 2 and start up the business, then you have to face your biggest problem, marketing! A lot of people might actually be in need of your goods, but there is very little money in circulation in this country. Most of your customers (like 60% of them) would want to deal on credits. If you know the amount of credit a lot of businesses have to offer, and this can be suicidal for a start up business.
You will have to deal with transportation, and believe me, it's costly as hell.
Then security, both you and your goods are not secure in this country.

The only reason a person should think of coming back here is if he has secured a political appointment down here, if not, manage your menial jobs it's way better.

My bro I am in the same situation as you. Although I reside in the Uk. I have managed to save quite a considerable amount of money back home so I believe I would survive well if I were to return back to Nigeria.

Don’t marry a woman for visa. You will regret it. If you have a child with her you will not really love it.

Save nothing less than 10million even if it is from menial job if you want to return.

I will definitely return sometime soon, I have had enough. There is nothing here. It has just been overhyped that life is very good here. I have not been really happy and I struggle to continue to stay here daily even with the fact I earn a lot of money.

In UK, bills will finish you, you can not really achieve any thing much, it is from pay check to pay check. You will never be rich, if you too struggle self highest na middle class you go be. The kind of job you are looking for if you are LUCKY you will get it. But bills and rent, plus if you buy a car will finish you as you maintain yourself and the woman, That is if you marry that lady.

Naija life sweet die no matter what people say. Nigerians travel abroad a lot because it gives us a sense of fulfilment and achievement that we have travelled. It is from Nigeria parents pay school fees of millions to schools overseas. You can afford £20,000 sch fees from Nigeria but you will not be able to see that kind of cash here. The economy here is a spending economy.

My bro hustle your money and return home.

Anyone that is abroad and is really enjoying themselves, making money no debts here they should raise their hand let me see. Make we stop to dey deceive ourselves.

Your fear is, “what people will say, that he once lived abroad.”
Let your family go their own abroad and make their own money so that they can lick the same sugar we are licking here. You want to die because of family. Let me be going jor, I cannot come and kill myself.

My reservations about moving to the UK

- I hate being at the mercy of others. Going to the UK on a spousal permit means losing my German residency and I'll be at her mercy. As should anything go wrong with the relationship , I'll have to leave the UK.

- Getting a professional job. It doesn't make sense to go to the UK and continue to be trapped in menial jobs. I have been there and I hardly see Nigerians in professional jobs except those with rich parents. Someone should advice me on that as it could not be a real reflection.

My Reservations about Nigeria

- High rate of startup failure
- Difficulty in getting loans to expand. I have heard they can ask for even your neck in those times. With a lack of collateral, more difficult.

For those asking about my course, Yes it's a STEM degree.
Go back home to Nigeria and secure yourself a lecturing job in one of the numerous Universities.
No one will give a black man jobs commensurate with your degree as the white men prefer their own kids to maintain future prosperity of their country.
Most black men with good degree are working as a Security guard in the office and supermarkets in order to pay their bills.
This is a dilemma of minorities living in UK and Europe.
This is the best advice I can give as someone who had been to UK myself.
However, listen to your heart and decide.

1. Do NOT marry that Nigerian girl in the UK. Western women (including Nigerians who have lived in the west for over two years) are selfish, disgusting, evil, vile, and cold-blooded! Marry her if you are ready to become a slave unto her, otherwise she would file DV against you.

2. If you are an Engineer, I would advise you to move to the US - opportunities abound in the US for Engineers!

Listen....

I am a Nigerian who relocated to the US to go hustle...some years ago. I went on a visa, to do what guys normally do- over stay visa, marry change status and live the American dream

My friends were doing it and it seemed kinda cool. Got to the US- the NE, got a survival job, was zeemingly living well, facebook pictures and all. Got into a bramch of IT(without papers) with w9 tho,and was earning like 20 an hour, which was something, though it wasnt steady, steady work.

To supplement i was a pizza driver by the side, also doing doordash, instashopper and all. But somehow, i was not happy, i knew i could do better.

To get any headway, i knew i had to marry-an akata or someone to get my stay to be legit and begin to work on a w2 with big companies getting steady pay.

I couldnt save enough to pay a girl $10k for marriage and the women loving me, were these obese, fat ugly ones who may be rich, but meeeeehn, getting an erection every night to service her for the 3 or 5yrs it would take me to get my PR was a no no.i cant keep up with pretense that long.

For how long would i then consider staying in the US as an overstay hoping for big break when i even got in, in my late 30's? The people,we(me and some friends from Naija who we came in together) looked upto were doing uber, amazon flex and Lyft. The big boys considered themselves car dealers- i come US come dey ship moto go back naija?

That seemed to be the immediate aspiration and so I asked myself, soooo, i will be drivung Uber in America? Taxi? Or be doing car dealer(which i didnt even have the money to go into) going to auction every tuesday and thurrsday? Thats the dream?

My IT work, those my managers and supervisors who paid me $20 an hour had bsen in the field for 30yeats and they always got to site before me and left after me, atimes 10hrs straight of work. So i asked mysf at what point will these peoplw rest?.At 70? 80? Because people with that kind of expeerice ( and i am talking master) are on the penthouse office in Lagos directing staff through managers. Here, they were still on the field. Haba

I decided i was coming back to Nigeria. I knew a couole of big wigs i felt qould give me a soft landing, but meeeehn, it hqs been hell since. Nothing has worked since i came back.

Ans i came back without money.

Now, all my hopes rests on a former Boss of mine who has is handling a huge govt project (we have been exchnaging notes on for the past three months)for the nexr 10years, totalling almost $12billion in execution.

If he calls me, hopefully within the next 48hrs,I would have been saved by the bell. If he doesnt, then i am doomed and oming back would perhaps be the biggest mistake of my life.

Look before you leap bro. Nigeria is hell, but by all means do not settle for menial jobs. But by all means, have a good alternative

I didn't say no job. I said lack of getting professional jobs.

Some people, Yes maybe, especially if you studied IT. A very large majority is trapped in menial jobs, not even full-time ones, the ones you get with unskilled employment agencies. Even with PhDs and all that. I wouldn't call that a great life. But to some people, it is. You have to understand perspectives.

I have a female Nigerian here who is employed with an agency and goes to clean people's home. She is quite happy and considers it a great opportunity considering that sometimes she joins the family on dinner outings and get gifts. It's great for her but not for me. I wouldn even accept something like that as I think It's no less than being a maid

Will you be able to survive in Germany, Yes. If you're someone with a big dream, I'll say difficult.

In Germany: Germans> EU nationals>US>Eastern Europe >Asians>Indians/Paki etc >Africans. That's the order of getting professional jobs.

If yo want to maximize your degree in IT, I will advise you come to the United States, specifically San Francisco Bay Area in California. There are lots of Nigerians working for IT companies located in this area, you are gonna be happy if you move to America as against UK. One more thing there is no discrimination in California. It’s a mixed state. I love the state so much.

Although the job is not that easy especially for international student on F1, but trust me if you have a masters degree in STEM, there is hope for you. Infact most of the STEM guys I know already got high paying jobs at Fortune 500 companies.

I know the US visa ain’t easy, but if you can find a way to get here, you won’t regret it.

My strategy -

If your educational achievements are good, enter UK for PhD (we can help you with this if your BSc and German MSc are at least good. I studied in Germany at some point)..

So, if you want the lady, you can wife her while doing your PhD on student visa. In this case, you're only under the mercy of the UK government/university, not the lady in question.

If you like this strategy, search for my email and reach out to me

ShyWhale, first-off, you didn't expressly state what you studied. If i were in your shoes though, ill start a side hustle preferably freelancing - there are several platforms for that. If possible also manage to intern in a tech firm. If you can extent your stay, get some certifications in tech. You might not need applying for jobs again in couple of months. More importantly, tune-up in prayers and you'd be fine in a short while. Whatever you do, make sure Naija is not among your options for now.

Good luck.

It depends on where you are. Top Nigerian brains/even above average Nigerians brains in the US/UK I know of are actually working solid job.

The other day, they featured this naija guy on bloomberg or one of these finance stations. I can tell you, that guy easily makes 600K. He is not even 40 in my estimation. Pure Naija

So, it depends on the abroad. Germany, while being one of the best countries I have lived, is not known to offer that kind of opportunities to outside-EU people.
