It wouldn't be such a bad idea if they do that... I have overheard groups of young men(on two occasions) in Kano talking about how invincible biko haram is because god fights with them.. how the videos released by biko haram shows they are winning the war... How biko haram helps young men get married and give them proper Islamic training.
This was between November and December last year and goes to show how far reaching boko harams propaganda machinery is.
War also needs propaganda... If not for any other thing, to counter propaganda
Several reports have suggested that a lot of Kano indigenes have gone ahead to join the outlawed group. And there are hundred of thousands of silent admirers, up North, that masturbate to the group's propaganda.

FIGHT AGAINST INSECURITY RECEIVES BOOST AS NAF GRADUATES 28 FROM YOUNG OFFICERS’ COURSE

The efforts of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to increase capacity for more effective and efficient engagement of internal security challenges facing the Nation have received another boost with the graduation of 28 officers from the Young Officers’ Course (YOC) 13/2019 at the Military Training Centre (MTC) Kaduna today, 24 May 2019. The course is part of the NAF’s sustained effort to develop the capacities of its personnel in all aspects of its operations.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was represented by the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Air Training Command (ATC), Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Muhammad Suleiman, urged the graduands to be prepared to apply themselves in battling the various security challenges confronting the country, having been equipped, both in character and skills, for the tasks ahead. In his words, “The NAF does not compromise standards and our collective commitment to excellence is paramount, if the Service is to effectively discharge its constitutional role”. The CAS stated that the NAF would continue to accord priority to equipping its units and personnel whilst ensuring their welfare was adequately catered for. He therefore charged the graduands to be innovative and come up with more proactive ways of carrying out their duties diligently and professionally. He equally urged them to uphold the high standards of discipline and loyalty the NAF was known for while ensuring they do not compromise national security or act in any manner capable of denting the good image of the Service. The AOC also thanked the CAS for his commitment to capacity building at all levels in the NAF.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commandant MTC, Air Commodore Jubrin Usman, said that the course was designed to improve the knowledge of young officers with a view to enhancing their productivity. He stated that during the 12 weeks course, the students were exposed to lectures tailored towards developing their staff, analytical and communication skills as well as principles and practical field demonstrations on asymmetric warfare. The course further emphasized on the need to conduct military operations in strict compliance with the rule of law in order to foster the much needed Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), which is essential in dealing with an enlightened citizenry under a democratic dispensation. The Commandant thanked the CAS for his keen interest and support for the training activities at the MTC.

Awards were presented to graduands who had distinguished themselves during the Course, particularly those who emerged First, Second and Third in Order of Merit. The Award Winners were; Flying Officers Oriade Onireti, Ubah Ikoko and Christopher Obasi. The AOC Ground Training Command, AVM Idi Amin; Commandant Air Force Institute of Technology, AVM Cletus Udeagulu, and Commanders of co-located NAF Units were among the dignitaries who graced the occasion.

NAF INFLICTS HEAVY CASUALTIES ON TERRORISTS IN AIR STRIKES CONDUCTED AT TUMBUN HAMMA IN NORTHERN BORNO STATE

The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has inflicted heavy casualties on Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP) elements in devastating air strikes conducted at Tumbun Hamma on the fringes of Lake Chad yesterday, 24 May 2019. The attack was conducted following credible intelligence reports indicating that the terrorists, who had fled the series of air strikes conducted by Nigerian, Nigerien and Chadian Air Forces, around the Malkanori-Tumbun Rego general axis of northern Borno State, had converged in Tumbun Hamma.

The attack was preceded by series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions which confirmed heavy presence of terrorists in several structures, along with their logistics items, spread across the small settlement. Accordingly, the ATF scrambled an Alpha Jet aircraft to attack the location, recording a successful direct hit in the centre of the target area leading to the neutralization of several terrorists as well as the destruction of their structures and logistics.

The NAF, operating in concert with surface forces, will sustain its operations to completely degrade the terrorists in the Northeast.

From what I have been able to gather concerning the Fulani question, I will say there are many factors involved here. In the initial stage, the Fulani herdsmen had legitimate grievances, concerning the way they and their livestock were being treated by the communities where they reside. On the part of the communities, the herdsmen and their cattle were seen as culprits of destroyed crops and investments. So, it began as a two way thing. As usual, the government,at state and federal levels, took the issue with very little seriousness.

Now, the Fulanis who, though largely uneducated, have always had a questionable sense of entitlement, see the emergence of President Buhari to mean that they are now collectively in power, and their actions can no longer be questioned. Hence, reckless adventurism by these renegade herdsmen have increased in recent years.

We must not be ignorant of the fact that the media has blown this issue beyond perspective (I won't say out of proportion, because this is an issue with very robust proportion, people are actually dying). Sensasional journalism and sectarian fault lines has given this matter a dangerous edge. Politicians ,like flies attracted to rotten carcass, are also having a field day.

Why is it that the Fulanis that had previously lived in peace with their host communities now seem to have turned berserk overnight?.

Like I always say, what is the solution?. Well,I believe the decision of the FG to open a radio station that broadcasts in fulfude will go a long way in sensitizing these people, they usually move around with portable radios. But I believe we must move beyond cosmetic solutions, the people in power are very familiar with leaders of these fulani renegades, therefore, the government must call them to order through their leaders. No herdsman (or herdsboy,as the case may be) should be seen strutting around with rifles.

We also need to work on regulations of small arms ownership. Who really own the cattle?,Who are the people arming these renegades?, Where are the sponsors getting the arms from?,is there any international corroboration?. We must answer these questions and put in place strict measures and deterrence.

We want to see scapegoats, a number of them rounded up and sent to prison or in the case of minors, an institute for the criminally insane. These things serves as deterrence and will help in pacifying the public.

In long term, things like education and a framework for proper ranching in the country should be explored. Baring that, the FG should consider a more communist approach of government ownership of all cattle, then contracting the livestock out to registered herdsmen under a national cattle redistribution scheme.

Perhaps if the rich alhaji in Abuja that has failed to build a ranch for his cattle, loses all his cows to the government, im eye go clear.

The Nigerian Army has depicted as false a distributed report making round, that 25 fighters were killed in Borno State on Saturday.

In an announcement discharged today, Sunday by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sagir Musa using his confirmed Twitter handle said there was no reality in the production.

"Report of fear-based oppressors assault and killing of 25 fighters and various regular people in Borno State on Saturday 25th May 2019 is Fake. "No fact in the distribution," he announced.

Review that there were distributed reports on some online media yesterday, that troops in Borno State were trapped and killed while escorting a gathering from a town in Borno State.

NAF AIRCRAFT DESTROYS ARMED BANDITS CAMP, NEUTRALIZES DOZENS AT DOUMBOUROU FOREST IN ZAMFARA STATE

The Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI has destroyed an armed bandits’ camp and neutralized dozens of bandits in air strikes conducted at Doumbourou Forest in Zamfara State. The operation was executed yesterday, 25 May 2019, pursuant to human intelligence (HUMINT) reports indicating that some locations within the Forest were being used by the armed bandits as hideouts, including a group of huts belonging to a notorious kingpin named “Dangote”. Accordingly, following confirmatory Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), an Alpha Jet aircraft was detailed to attack the armed bandits’ camp leading to the destruction of their structures and neutralization of close to two dozen bandits.

The NAF, working in consonance with other security agencies, will sustain its operations to flush the bandits out of the Northwest of the Country.

As President Muhammadu Buhari winds down the first stanza of his administration, top military officers have begun jostling for the positions of service chiefs.

Already, there are reports of a likely shake-up in the military during the second term of the president, which begins on Wednesday, as the tenures of some of the service chiefs have expired.

THISDAY checks at the weekend showed that some of the high-ranking military officers have started lobbying to replace their superior officers.

The subterranean succession battles have triggered simmering tensions in the military, sources said.

The unusual situation was triggered by a recent rumour that while Buhari was considering renewing the tenures of the service chiefs, for a record third time, some of his close aides and associates opted for an overhaul of the leadership of the nation’s armed forces to infuse new confidence in efforts in tackling the insecurity in many parts of the country.

The president had argued recently that it was unhealthy to change service chiefs when the country was in a state of war with insurgents. But he admitted that there are ambitious officers who were aiming to succeed the service chiefs.

The situation has thrown up lobby groups who are determined to ensure that the service chiefs do not return after the May 29 inauguration.

The groups, acting on behalf of senior officers eyeing such positions, have been secretly reaching out to influential government officials, top-ranking politicians and powerful traditional rulers, among others, to convince the president on the need to appoint fresh hands to run the military establishments.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Gabriel Olonisakin, who is a member of the Combatant Regular Course 25, is believed to have spent 40 years in service as against the statutory 35 years, having enlisted in the Nigerian Defence Academy for cadet training on January 3, 1979.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, a member of Course 26, has also spent 40 years in service, having joined the Navy in 1979.

His colleague, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, a member of Course Cadet Military Training Course (CMTC 5) joined the Air Force in November 1979. He has also spent 40 years in service.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Yusuf Buratai, a member of the Course 29, has spent 38 years in service.

In January, 1981, Buratai attended the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna as a member of the 29 Regular Combatant Course (29 RC) where he was given the prestigious appointment of Cadet Sergeant Major (CSM).

The major argument being put forward against the continued stay of the service chiefs has remained that the war against insurgency has persisted owing to the fact that “they have run out of ideas.”

“Obviously, they have run out of ideas. They have lost a sense of direction. Why are we losing soldiers every day? Our equipment is purchased and then carted away by insurgents and we still make noise.

“Change is a management concept that improves on situations and strategies.

“Even if the president ends up renewing their tenures again, it will end up eroding military ethos and tradition thereby creating major problems”, a senior military source told THISDAY.

The other contention is that many senior officers who had hoped to reach the peak of their career, including occupying the seat of the service chiefs, were forced to retire prematurely.

“So many senior officers were forced to retire up to Course 35. How would they move up when those from Courses 25 to 29 are still in service?

“In those days when core military tradition was adhered to, this won’t be the case,” another senior military source said.

Another line of argument is that some senior officers who believe they have the panacea to the challenge of insurgency have refused to volunteer such ideas.

“If you volunteer such an idea, somebody who has sat on your career progression would take advantage and take credit for your initiative and effort”, the source said.

Efforts by THISDAY yesterday to get the spokesman of the Defence Headquarters, Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, were unfruitful. He neither picked up calls to his telephone line nor has he replied to the message sent to his WhatsApp platform as at press time.

However, Buhari is still at liberty to extend the tenure of the service chiefs, if he still considers them pivotal to winning the war against insurgency. The 1999 Constitution confers on the president the powers to reappoint or extend the tenure of the service chiefs.

Based on the Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, the tenure of the defence and service chiefs expired on July 13, 2017.

However, the president approved the extension of the tenure till December 2017.

Buhari had on July 13, 2015, appointed the present crop of defence and service chiefs, and ought to have replaced them after the statutory two years.

In extending their tenures, Minister of Defence, Brigadier-General Mansur Dan-Ali (rtd) had said: “the President and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, having carefully reviewed the ongoing military operations across the country and the efforts of the Chief of Defence Staff and the service chiefs in the counter-insurgency operations in the North-East coupled with the security situation of the Niger Delta region, has approved the extension of tenure of service chiefs.

“This extension is pursuant of the powers conferred on the President by Section 218 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Section 09.06 of the Harmonised Terms and Conditions for Service for officers (2012) Revised.”

NAF DEGRADES BOKO HARAM MEETING VENUE AT BULA KOREGE IN BORNO STATE

The Air Task Force (ATF) for Operation LAFIYA DOLE has decimated a location at Bula Korege on the fringes of Sambisa Forest in Borno State, being used by Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) as a meeting venue. The attack was conducted on 25 May 2019 following successive days of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, coupled with Human Intelligence reports, that established that some structures within the settlement were being used as a rendezvous by the BHTs from where they assemble to launch attacks against own troops and innocent civilians. Accordingly, the ATF detailed a fighter aircraft to attack the hideout, scoring hits within the target area leading to significant degrading of the BHT structures. Several BHTs were also killed as a result of the strikes.

The NAF, operating in concert with surface forces, will sustain its operations to completely degrade the terrorists in the Northeast.

10 SECURITY RELATED NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY 27 MAY, 2019.

5. SECRET MANUAL OF BOKO HARAM GUERRILLAS.
If one ever wonders how Boko Haram and ISWAP guerrillas pick soft targets and avoid head-on clashes with the gallant Nigerian soldiers, a hitherto secret manual of war by the terrorist group has shed some light. The manual suggests the terrorists tactics is deliberate: they are fighting according to instructions from Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the group’s elusive leader. Reuters quoting Islamic State al-Naba online newspaper, said Baghdadi has encouraged his followers to adopt guerrilla tactics and published detailed instructions on how to carry out hit-and-run operations. According to the report, the guidelines make clear the group is adopting it as standard operating procedure, especially as they have lost territories in all their theatres of war, in Iraq and Syria and also in North East Nigeria, where a degraded Boko Haram metamorphosed into ISWAP. The operating procedure in a nutshell is a style of fighting that avoids direct confrontation and that seeks to weaken the state military by attrition. In a rare video published by IS’s Al Furqan network in April, the group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi encouraged followers to fight on and weaken the enemy by attrition, stressing that waging war is more important than winning. Hassan Abu Hanieh, a Jordanian expert on Islamists, said IS has used guerrilla tactics to temporarily seize towns in order to attract media coverage but also as part of a new strategic approach.
