Well it depends on the tone she used and she said it in the presence of her customers. Did she go close to him to say it or she said it while serving her customers....these are the questions we need to ask.
But frankly speaking I don't think they have a good understanding cos I have seen husband and wife run restaurant business together.

The husband's reaction may be rash. That however doesn't justify the woman's action. She knows the kind of man she married and she's been living with. That he lost his job is no excuse for her to be insensitive or start comparing him to couples who run restaurant business together.. Such things for such a man is best discussed first at home and not a sudden opinion in public. The start-point of a man losing respect in his home doesn't differ from this. It's an unconscious, gradual process till the woman will get used to it and capitalize on it as she gets irritated. women that easily forget themselves.. it's what they see at the moment that appeals to them, not what has been done for them before trial, they love to be endured but they can't endure

The inclusion of "help me" = pleading tone. She pleaded for his help but was met with a slap, smh.

From the write up i see nothing wrong with the husband helping his wife to wash plates to serve, as a man your family wellfare comes first before any other thing.
Their is no dignity in poverty, as a guy i prefer to soil in my hands on dirts(legal stuffs) to make ends meat than to beg.
The man should be ashamed of himself because if not for any other thing why cant he ignore his pride for his child, and make the necessarily correction at home.
His wife needs help in the restaurant cant he be of help than being idle.
