Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Wednesday night sacked all local government chairmen across the 33 councils and 35 Local Council Development Authorities (LCDAs) with immediate effect.

Makinde, in a statement by his Chief of Staff, Mr Bisi Ilaka, asked them to handover to the head of local government administration or senior directors in their local government areas and councils.

The statement reads “His Excellency, the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde has directed as follows:

“That all local Government authorities, Local Council Development Authorities be dissolved with immediate effect.

“That all Local Government Chairmen are to hand over to their Heads of Local Government Administration (HLA) or the most Senior Directors in their local government areas and councils.

“That all Boards of Parastatals and corporations be dissolved.

“That embargo be placed on all Local and State Government accounts until further directives.”

I thougt the past administration have seek the court order to stop incoming administration not to tamper with local govt adm.

he has to get those who feel will be loyal and work for the development of the state and his reelection but I think there should be a law protecting local government officials. i think there should be a law saying they can only be removed by 2/3 of the state house of assembly

I thought there was a court judgment that said no Governor has the power to sack LGA chairmen since they were elected just like the governors . Well the chairmen if they were properly elected should challenge this action in court.

The election was quite dubious. No other party contested throughout the state except APC.
It was a kangaroo election organized by Ajimobi to put his people in place sometimes last year. The first & only time he did LGA election in his 8 years, I think.

It was expected that Seyi would sack them.
IMO, he acted fast & well.

Even if the election was fraudulent, is the governor now a law court His party should go to court and not unilaterally sack the elected chairmen. This is bad, supreme court needs to stop this.

on serious note this is just the simple reason I don't take the governors serious when they cry foul against the FG. I don't take them serious for any move. their cry for federalism is just a cry of crocodile to enrich 'emselves, local government as the third tier of government is meant to be independent but this thieves won't allow it.

and tomoro u guys will be shouting that the NFIU bill which intends to give local govt money straight to local govt guarantees autonomy until we create a framework where local govt are not subjected to the whims and caprices of state gorvenos that NFIU bill is a huge joke...

Elect faya. The governor schemes them to position, but sacking them at will is another question. His legal team must've advised him that whoever wasn't duly elected can be sacked.
That is one of the main areas that legislators have failed woefully. The LG has zero autonomy or power. The LG funds that the state governments receive on behalf of LG is the main source of unaccounted funds aside security votes for governors
