Third Mainland Bridge -  otherwise known as Ibrahim Babangida Boulevard  -  is the longest of the three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, the others are the Eko and Carter bridges.

The bridge has a total length of 11.8 km.

The Third Mainland bridge has gained notoriety as a venue for frequent automobile accidents - of which many leads to fatality.

A day hardly goes by without a record of an incidence of an automobile crash.

Many concerned Lagosians now wonder: can’t these accidents be averted?

Interestingly, the reason for the frequent accident on Third Mainland Bridge is obvious - Over-speeding.

The recommended maximum speed limit on the Third Mainland bridge is 70km/h for cars and 60km/h for buses.

If one is driving at 70km/h, one can manage the wheels, but not at 100km/h or more.

When driving at a high speed, it is more difficult to react on time, and it is harder to control your vehicle in the potential event of an accident.

It is for this reason that vehicles sometimes summersault on the bridge and/or plunge into the waters.

Sadly, the legally allowed speed limit appears to be the starting speed for many motorists plying that bridge.

Driving within the stipulated speed limit is the most effective way to avoid car crashes.

Tragically, there is absolutely no enforcement of the speed limit on the Third Mainland Bridge.

That means LASTMA/FRSC need to be stationed on 3MB with a speed-meter to arrest speed racers.

Meanwhile, LADIES, say good-bye to menstrual pains. Check my signature for the solution.

Do cars actually move at 100km/h with such traffic?

If there's no speed limit on that bridge, I believe the maximum speed is 100km/h. Any vehicle moving within that limit did not over speed

Except you're driving very late in the night, you can't maintain 100km/h on that bridge for long. That bridge is always busy. Nigerians drive recklessly when they see good roads.

Puleeeaasse! We have smooth roads where drivers speed without accident.

What speed can u even engage in without meeting traffic in Lagos sef?

I feel the marine spirit from the ocean is at work ni or Lagos drivers dont go to driving school or the stress of living in Lagos catches up with them making them sleep off while driving.

I've experienced a driver sleeping while driving o, that shii ain't funny

In general, over speeding is a major contributing factor to most accidents on the road.

I can't forget what my father told me when I was about seven years old. We were traveling to the village on Christmas period, he was on the wheel, another vehicle speedily did over take us, he said, if I am driving, that I should drive according to what I can control. That someone can control 140 very well while another finds it very difficult to control 120. That statement is evergreen in my mind any time I lay my hands on steering.

100km/h is not too much on the 3rd mainland bridge. It is a misinformation to say that the speed limit is 70km/h. I know I sometimes do 110, 120 but 100 is not too much.

maybe u mean rushing hours like in the morning and close of work in the afternoon..but most times you can do high speed outside these periods and also Saturday and Sunday too.
