The world’s most powerful 2.0 litre, four-cylinder series production engine has been revealed by Mercedes AMG, set to feature in its upcoming ’45’ model range.

Developing 415bhp in its most potent ‘S’ form, this completely new 2.0 turbo replaces the engine in used in the previous A45 A-Class, CLA45 and GLA45

Another major aim has been extracting a sportier driving experience from the engine by altering its torque delivery. While the previous, M133 four-cylinder engine’s torque curve resembled a diesel’s, rising steeply to level off across a wide chunk of the rev range, the new M139 2.0 produces more of a crescendo of thrust.


The aim is to produce the rising rush of acceleration characteristic of a revvy, normally aspirated engine. Rather than flat-lining, diesel-style, from around 2000rpm, AMG’s new engine generates peak torque at 5200rpm, while nevertheless producing more shove than the old one between 1000-2000rpm, the strongest surge developing from 3000rpm. Overall, said Illenberger, “it produces a more sporty delivery”.


The transmission shares the engine’s cooling circuit and has its own heat exchanger mounted directly to it. Also interesting is the fact that the engine is oriented 180 degrees opposite its predecessor with the exhaust manifold and turbo facing the firewall. This apparently helps reduce the complex turns needed for intake and exhaust piping, and that presumably also improves gas flow. And like all of AMG’s big V8s, each engine is assembled by one person’s hands.

Racing engines and mass production engines are very different. One is built to last like 1k miles max, the other is built to last hundreds of thousands of miles.

I'm not sure if you're serious but Mercedes has a 1.6L turbocharged F1 engine that makes close to 900 HP. It's also on the Mercedes One:One, I believe.

This 2.0L engine is very impressive no matter how you spin it. In comparison, the Nissan GTR only makes 600 HP from a twin-turbocharged 3.8L V6.

Don't try to downplay what Mercedes achieved.

Lol, nice joke. A much heavier Infiniti Q50 Red Sport does 0-60 in 4.5s with 400HP. The A35 already does it in 4.7s with just 302 HP.

The A45 will do it in 4.0s, easily. Watch and see.

nurey was not only talking trash about mercedes, but all of germany, that means including bmw and porsche. My IS has held its own greatly, i havent pushed it as much as i thought i would because of the kidnapping going on along abj-kaduna road. I initially bought the car for the purpose of my weekly trips, i wanted something that pushed out 300hp+ without the high maintenance cost of something like an 2009-2011 E550, though that has about 380hp but it was what i had in mind at first. It is definitely not even a close comparison to my previous C230, no need to waste time on that. Performance wise, it is quicker than my E350 but i feel more confident with the benz on high speed. The lexus is more nimble and stiff which makes it feel more performance oriented. My only complain about the lexus is the transmission, not that its bad, but i feel the difference 1 less gear makes compared to the mercedes. I am more confident overtaking with the transmission on that benz than the 6 speed on the IS. However, i always find myself going in the IS whenever i feel like driving quick, i have been getting 5.7-5.9secs to 60mph. It is a very tight call between the IS and my previous 335i. One thing is clear, the bmw was more balanced at high speeds and had better handling. It also had a better transmission, 0-60 pull feels pretty equal, too close to call i dont know which to pick. But the bmw definitely felt faster on the higher end, probably because of the turbochargers, that thing does not stop pulling. Overall, i’d buy the IS over and over again, very solid car and it has been reliable too, it is a car you buy when you want to drive fast but dont want anybody to know

Thanks for this! Interesting to see how you can feel the extra gear. Also, German cars are unbeatable in terms of high speed control. Even a Golf is built to be able to reach its limiter without feeling like it's about to toss you off the road, something most Japanese cars can't boast of.

Las las, this is the most important part. I've never met an IS350 on the highway but I definitely won't be trying to race anyone I see. Probably just honk to say hi and go my own way, me I don't have power to be gapped by a Lexus. The IS is such a sleeper.

Reading this your comment makes me want to cry, so I sold my is250 and bought a freaking c300, I’ll say one thing, the c300 is stupidly too slow for my liking, the Lexus felt faster and that gave me an unexplainable joy in my soul anytime I pushed her, the Benz feels more like a truck anytime I want to pull a stunt, but the sale of the is250 was inevitable though, can’t wait to buy me an is350 to replace my sweet passion or best bet for me isf
