Religious bodies in Kaduna state have expressed divergent views on the passage of the bill to regulate preaching in the state.

The state house of assembly had, on Friday, passed the executive bill which was introduced in 2016.

Reacting to the development, Sunny Akanni, counsel to the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), threatened to sue the state assembly for disobeying a court order restraining it from taking any action on the bill pending the determination of a suit before the state high court.

According to him, in March 2017, the PFN filed a suit against the bill on the grounds that it is offensive to fundamental human rights.

“We are surprised that despite the court order restraining the house from continuing with the hearing or anything on the controversial bill pending the determination of the matter, the lawmakers went ahead to pass it,” Akanni said.

“We are going to serve forms 47 and 48 on the house for disobedient of court order and if they don’t respond, we will charge the clerk and the speaker of the house for contempt of court.”

Similarly, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said it is studying the revised bill and will sue the state assembly if it is not satisfied with the provisions.

Joseph Hayab, state chairman of the association, urged Nasir el-Rufai, governor of the state, not to sign the bill in haste.

“We are going to test that bill in the court of law because we are in a democracy, people should not just bring laws from the back door,” he said.

“You don’t make laws with the intent of causing havoc, you make laws with the intent of helping people to unite. You don’t make laws and claiming that the purpose of the law is for peace but the law itself is used to cause crisis.

“We are stakeholders in nation building, but when people choose to treat us as if we don’t understand what is happening, then we have to show them that we also have a right.”

On the contrary, the state chapter of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), applauded the bill, saying the Muslim body was given the opportunity to make input.

Yusuf Adamu, state secretary of the JNI, said anybody who will preach according to the books should not be afraid of the bill.

“We were given chance to make inputs. CAN and JNI were asked to make inputs. CAN refused to do anything, we (JNI) made our inputs and it was considered,” he said.

“So as far as I am concerned, you should have no reason to fear if you know you are going to preach according to the books.

“I think we should throw away sentiments and be objective. We were asked to make our comments (on the bill). If you refused to make your comments, you have no reason to complain.”

The problem with the license is that

1.It essentially gives any governor power to determine what a cleric would preach and by extension determine doctrine for any religious grouping.. Are governors religious experts??

2.It can be used to supress one religion and elevate the other...and knowing Kaduna state's histroy with religion...

3.It creates problems.

4.Exactly how is government going to determine what the right theology is that should be preached?? How?

Now I know why the government is doing this.....but government must not be allowed to regulate religious beleif. It is a dangerous preccedent.

Ironically, it may be targeted at Muslims too....

Even then, government has no business telling people the contents of their sermons, whatever the religion. Nigeria is a secular country, not a religious one.

Lol.... So you'd stop Christians from doing morning cries or evening cries?? Or if a Christian wants to preach to lost souls in a bus, he'd need a license??

Seems they'd have to arrest a lot of Christians then

Preaching should be regulated 100% o cause I don't want a situation where Christians will be slaughter up north.

Christians should not preach at places they shouldn't. No more religious crisis.

SMH for this CAN of hypocrites

US has laws regulating Religion

UK has laws regulating Religion

Israel has laws Regulating Religion

but bring such to backward Africa and watch them turn it to something to fight about

Yes we have Freedom of speech, however if you say any treasonable anti national word, you are guilty of a capital crime, if you use your speech to tarnish other peoples images you are guilty of Libel or defamation, If you use speech to decieve people for gratification or money you are guilty of fruad.

We have Freedom of Religion and Association, however if an Imam wakes up one morning and calls for the killing of people who dont share his faith, then we need a law that would postulate apporpraite punishment for him

Most of this Ignorant Biased Hypocrite havent even read a copy of the proposed law

Anyways even Jesus said "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven".

Freedom to practise within their confines and not try to force people, i dont want to hear one imam shouting as early as 5am or i enter a bus with thoughts and someone would say "lets close our eyes and pray"..i support the bill so far it is not discriminatory, but what do i know, this is 9ja...

el rufai is a bigot, a dangerous one. You think el rufai will do harm to his own religion?.

Nigeria Christians are just too stupid, they will soon become less than 20% of Nigeria because they want to play safe and look like a good people

There is nothing dangerous about governments regulating religions. Governments in developed nations regulate religions n it's the right thing to do.

Government failure to regulate religion in Nigeria destroyed the Nigerian religious space.

Christian leaders should be more proactive. They should raise funds and sponsor a working visit your for these Moslem leaders to countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. These are Moslem predominant countries that more into the religion than what we have here in Nigeria.
This religious intolerance has a political undertone, clearly or the Moslem leaders are yet to understand what their religion is all about.
Till we disconnect politics from religion, no progress will be made to address this unnecessary impasse.
