In an excerpt of the National address by the then Military head of state General Ibrahim Babangida annulling the June 12 1993 Presidential election. IBB, despite acknowledging the election to be free and fair, still went ahead to annul it, read the excerpt below…

”It is true that the presidential election was generally seen to be free, fair and peaceful. However, there was in fact a huge array of electoral malpractice virtually in all states of the federation before the actual voting began. About 2.1 billion naira was spent by both presidential candidates. We have authenticated reports of electoral malpractice against party agents, NEC officials and the electorate, who were manipulated through offer and acceptance of money and other forms of inducements
The conduct of the election, the behavior of the candidates and post-election responses continued to elicit signals which the nation can only ignore at its peril… To proclaim and swear in a president who has encouraged a campaign of divide and rule amongst our various ethnic groups would have been detrimental to the survival of the third republic.”

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida
former Head of State, Federal Republic of Nigeria
Excerpt from his national address on the annulment of the June 12 presidential election, 26 June 1993

It wasn't even a landslide win for SDP. That there was monetary inducements was not a lie. But Babangida bleeped up all the same

shocked

The dangers of population explossion is seriously gonna bite us hard,

look at number of votes 6m+5m = 11m voters (1993)

number of Voters in 2019 is 15m+11m = 26m voters (2019)

in 26 years the number of voters jumped from 11million people to 26million people

2019 we are now kidnaping each others and north are getting far insecure, by 2035 we would actually start canibalism back if care is not taking...

yet we are worried about meaningless politics

The elections were probably the freest in the country's history but a powerful cabal sought to mess up the polity.

Imagine. MKO lost in most eastern states. Did these people ever supported anything from South West? Yet they refer to Yorubas as traitors

IBB's decision with his cohorts in the north cost and robbed us of what would have been the finest democracy,no wonder nemesis is catching up with him in his twilight. It's time he tenders unreserved apology for this costly decision and deprived opportunity. Two people come to mind when June 12 is mentioned in Nigeria;the bearer of mandate(MKO) and the killer of mandate(IBB).

IBB decided to 'step aside' on 27 Aug 1993. How could he have been a former Head of State 26 Jun 1993?

He missed a golden opportunity to return the nation to democratic rule. He had no reason whatsoever to annul the people's will.

In his deepest heart, he probably regrets the annulment himself. A very baseless reason to cancel the result. Were there no tribunals for addressing such issues?
