Bolowolowo: One Nigerian player was in the box as well What is good for the goose is good for the gander Apart from the penalty controversy, I must applaud the discipline that the girls showed tonight. They played with a heart driven by victory even though we lost. We hope this attitude translates to a victory in our next match, should we qualify. But we need to learn to counter more effectively. That and a few defensive tweaks and we are set. Our opponents holding the ball with 90% possession doesn't really matter to me so far we do the scoring. All in all, great game Falcons and all the very best 1 Like |

gamaliel9: That was the mistake they made against Norway: Trying to match Dem blow for blow. This was the only way we could have played France. But for that penalty that game could have gone for 120 mins without France scoring |

Nigeria 0 France 1: More penalty drama sees hosts top group Wendie Renard dispatched a retaken penalty for her third goal of the Women's World Cup as France edged past Nigeria on Monday. Hosts France secured top spot in Group A at the Women's World Cup after more penalty controversy saw them earn a 1-0 win over 10-woman Nigeria. A draw would have seen France lead the pool and Nigeria join them in the next round as a top-ranked third-placed side, and such an outcome appeared likely for much of a dull contest. However, Ngozi Ebere was shown a second yellow card and conceded a late penalty following a VAR review - the second straight match in which France have benefited from the technology. Wendie Renard missed the spot-kick at the first attempt but took full advantage of being ordered to retake it after Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie stepped off her line. Renard, who netted twice against South Korea and then scored an own goal against Norway, proved the match-winner and Nigeria must now wait to see if three points are enough to advance to the next stage. France predictably dictated play from the off, while Nigeria provided a threat on the break. However, set-pieces appeared the most likely route to goal for either side early on as Amandine Henry volleyed wide. A rare moment of individual brilliance from Delphine Cascarino almost teed up Valerie Gauvin, but the match remained deadlocked at the end of an uneventful first half. Cascarino slammed wide and then squared for Gaetane Thiney to wastefully shoot off target early in the second period, with the forward going closer when she prodded another dangerous right-wing centre across the face of goal. But the penalty - awarded by referee Melissa Borjas following a review of video footage - after Ebere tangled with Viviane Asseyi and was shown a red card finally led to the breakthrough. Renard dragged a tame penalty against the foot of the left-hand upright, but Nnadozie's early movement provided a reprieve and the defender picked out the top-right corner to seal the win at the second attempt. forgiveness: It's not about shots and possession its about getting a result. We needed a result and the best 11 were on the pitch for that. Barring injuries, we were not down, we had the game just where we wanted to have it, it was still favorable to us. So why make a substitute if it cannot improve the state of things. Except I was gunning for a win or I doubted my defense ability to keep up with the pressure, then I'd make one. I think the coach did what many good coaches would have done. Kept the team compact like that. There was no need bringing a fresh leg which can equally be calamitous to our play. 2 Likes |

andrew444: Andrew, we are like one family here. I don't think anybody here would result to harboring hard feelings of hate towards another on a faceless forum. I personally don't. While I know we each have our unique personalities, you still need to calm down sometimes and not let words get to you. That's why you're readily belligerent. It is like your default setting. I have once pointed this out to you when we had a little disagreement on a soccer concept. Dey take am easy sometimes...ehn At the end of the day, na love of SE bond us together for here and who knows, if we coincidentally meet each other in person outside this thread, we should be able to relate easily. 3 Likes |

I already know before the match that france will try and win by fire by force even if it required cheating. That penalty was not a penalty at all. And how did that there crook foul merited a yellow card.? And pls what does it takes to start Kanu instead of the misfiring Oshoala? I pray we qualify sha .... I won't mind a rematch vs those french 1 Like 1 Share |
