Hmm! Debts mostly based on estimated bills? I know some people still owe on legitimate bills. The best way forward is to provide meters for every home. You don't need to go round checking meters because those who don't pay are automatically disconnected. Why are they shying away from doing this?

You're on point with regards to transmission. It's a weak link.

Spot on!! Babe. That's just it. Provide meters to every customer and watch how monies will flow into industry. All those talk of non-reflective tariffs won't be an issue because people will pay for what they consumed, nothing more. Like the guy you quoted said: 'it's not rocket science'

To me this problem of electricity, no government as taken it serious, truely

We all see it in the news, where country would give a Road map to achiving something, they will give blue print of how they want to achieve a goal take for instances, Europe has a Road map to stop using gasoline engine in the car by 2030 or so, everyone is aware of, if one government leave and another one comes, he would see the blue Print and continue from there

NO government in the history of Nigeria as say by 2040 or by 2050, we would all have electricity, all they do is one government do they own, leave and another one do and leave no clear directection of what they want to achieve, it paina me to see to always see this ,

In the next 20 to 30 years I bet that this project they proposed would not be useful, that is another waste of money

Let this adminaistration do a feasable study, draw a Road may to achiving it, and place a timeline to achiving it, even if they project would be completed on 2090 no problem,

Once there is a blueprint, and everybody is aware of it, if another adminaistration say the want to do anything that would not in Anyway support the blueprint, we would say no

If there is a blueprint, each government can set a target, even do it is 10% they want to achievers within there tenure, then we know within the next 10 adminaistration we would be thinking of 24 hours electricity

Let them give a blueprint and give a timeline to implement and not all this small project that they are do up and down

Easier said. Discos are not ready to invest, all what they want is to maximize excess profits and nothing more. They’re the devils in the power sector of our country

it starts from the top... break generations into regions. amy form of generation goes to a center grid. they need to decentralize generation to start with. It opens up avenues to try different means of generation. Every where doesnt have to be just hydro and gas turbines. Where wind can be deployed, they deploy. where solar can be deployed, they deploy. this in return opens up the economy which cadcades down all the way to discos.

with that solved, it becomes easy to strengthen transmission as the scope has become more smaller and gives it more focus.. its easier to invest in. you know where you catering for.

To the most greedy of them all, distribution. they dont want to spend but the want to earn. Assuming they aint a greedy bunch but diligent, maintaining statusquo would have been fine , all they just need to do is provide meters but no, why spend when its easier to take advantage of the community, when it only increase their cost. They dont provide transformers, they wont change weak cables, they wont mount strong feeder pillars. Imagine in 2019, we still have tree stem pillars. They refused to be innovative as they basked in their laziness and the best part is they can then issue estimated bills, easy and cool cash. Just tear them bill to achieve revenue targets.
i feel the bar needs to raised on discos. make it more competitive. their coverage area is too much for them. invite more players into the discos. power minister needs to facilitate this further breakdown.

those enjoying drom this largesse from the top are tbe ones stoping this from happen.

You're right but I agree with the VP that discos should no longer be allowed to controlled territories.

Of what use really handing over an entire Lagos mainland to IKEDC if they cannot service it properly?

Recently, IKEDC went harassing a certain company that built power plant to provide electricity for their staff quarters insisting the

quarters is within their territory. The company was given the option of either sourcing power from IKEDC or pay IKEDC before they could turn on their power plant.

The company should take IKEDC as an alternative source of metered power which they will rarely use, ensure IKEDC give official notice and correspondence on the options listed by IKEDC and then sue IKEDC to court if they try to sabotage the company's effort.

If Ota and RCCG camp can built power station in 9months and 1year, what happened to the plant built in Nembe Bayelsa State nd a village close to Owerri and others not mentioned during Jona administration. FG is the problem we have. We go die our children go still complain of what we are brain storming. Did u hear the problematic government saying revoking the license of DISCO isnt the problem. When a DISCO like BEDC would give electricity for 3hrs,5,8 at most 12hrs in state capital is not a problem with estimated billing. Useless Nigeria Politician's everywhere. Was BEDC not a campaign promise Buhari and Oshiomole made in Warri. To me o light in Nigeria is possible if Buhari turns off his generator and other follows suit.

bellachibaby:
The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, says the Federal Government is discussing with stakeholders on ways to restructure Nigeria’s power sector with a view to improving supply and attracting more investment to the country.

Osinbajo stated this in Abuja on Tuesday at a Breakfast Meeting of the Lagos Business School.

He expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to creating “a willing buyer, willing seller” situation in the power sector market.

According to Osinbajo, the same old ways where Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) controlled territory that they could not service cannot continue, NAN reports.

“I think that what the Distribution Companies will argue, and what also we have to accept, is that we really have to have a cost-effective tariff one way or the other.

“The way it has worked in the experiments we have seen and what we have done is, for example, what we call the energising economies projects that we have done where we have enabled private power in markets,” he said.

The Vice President noted that private power projects had been executed at the Sabon Gari Market in Kano; the Ariaria Market in Aba; the Sura Market in Lagos; and in Ondo.

He said that the arrangements enabled the private power supplier to provide power to shop owners and businesses at an agreed cost-effective tariff.

Osinbajo observed that the current regulatory framework of the power sector in the country had to take into consideration the effective model of power supply.

“I think the current regulatory structure just has to accommodate the realities and we have got to make sure that we move ahead, otherwise we are going to have ourselves – as we are at the moment – regulating 4,000 megawatts of power for the next four years, which obviously is a disaster.

“We can’t sit here complaining about some people, who are complaining about power and saying we should cancel the licences of people who are providing power.

“It’s not going to work.”

The vice president further said that the Federal Government was also working to attract more investment to the gas sector.

On industrialisation, he said government was planning to develop Special Economic Zones nationwide with the aim of creating special places that would have different atmospheres conducive for processing, manufacturing, and industrialisation.

He said that economic zones were being built in Lagos, Aba, Katsina, and other places.

Osinbajo said that there were also plans to build up infrastructure in small, medium, and large industrial clusters already existing across Nigeria.

He said that government was looking at the leather hubs in Aba in Abia; Ogidi in Anambra, and Kano state as well as iron works and fabrication clusters in Nnewi, Anambra State and in Bauchi.

“The whole point is that we want to make sure that where we have existing economic clusters, we go in there to assist with power and other infrastructural needs that they may have there.

“So, we are not necessarily creating new zones or new clusters, but building up those that we have so that they can be much more productive.”

The vice president, who also spoke on human capital development in the “Next Level” of the Buhari administration, especially in relation to education and health, said that Nigeria would have a problem if something drastic was not done about them.

He said that the Federal Government and the states were considering how to enforce the nine-year free and compulsory education policy in the country.

“This is a policy of the Federal Government and we believe that it must be enforced, especially because we know that this is the critical years of the child’s life,” he said.

He said that enforcing the policy would ensure that the number of out-of-school children in the country dropped.

According to him, the Federal Government’s policy on education also involves the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics programmes, which will deal with the whole question of teacher training for digital literacy.

Osinbajo said that the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration would expand the Social Investment Programmes, including the N-Power scheme, the Home Grown School Feeding Programme, the Conditional Cash Transfer, and the Government Enterprise Empowerment Programme so that it would include more Nigerians.

IF NIGERIA POLITICAL LEADERSHIP WANT TO SALVAGE OUR BATTERED POWER SECTOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MUST HAVE TO LOOK BEYOND THE NIGERIA SHORES FOR EXPERTS.

WE NEED TO GET THE CHINESE TO RESCUE US FROM AN ALREADY BAD SITUATION.

Ignorant President Goodluck Jonathan went and gave the contracts of providing powers to BANKERS, PHARMACIST, EX-MILITARY HEAD OF STATE and the rest of the PDP FAITHFULS who do not even study electrical engineering.

Although President Jonathan had a good reasons for engaging NIGERIANS to provide power. He wanted to promote our local content.

But he forgot TOO QUICKLY that Nigerians are fake, fraudulent and deceiful. Infact, they do not possess the knowledge and experience they claim to have in providing or generating power for the country.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN FOOLISHLY GAVE THIS POWER GENERATING COMPANIES A 10 YEARS CONTRACT. What a waste of precious time for NONETITY !

Today, the power sectors is COMATOSE.

Whether they call it DISCO, GENCOS and all that jinggles the end result is COMATOSE AND TOTAL FAILURE.

NIGERIA NEED AN INTERNATIONAL HANDS TO ADDRESS OUR POWER PROBLEMS IN NIGERIA.

We should forget about the socalled LOCAL CONTENT.

Power theft is one area the FG must address first before enforcing prepared meters in every home

That will be putting the cart before the horse. Power must be available first before we can say there is power theft, and then the prepaid meter and legislation can be put in place simultaneously

DISCOs will go bankrupt with prepaid meters in every home.

The right legislations and judicial processes to deter power theft are not yet in place.

In small Benin Republic, bypassing or other forms of power theft is a very serious offence with
special courts and varying jail terms or huge fines for offenders.

Power theft is one area the FG must address first before enforcing prepared meters in every home

There is enough technology to prevent power theft and it is already a big crime. Let's the Discos protect their investments with technology not to be stealing from innocent Nigerians because there are power theft by minute few

There is a problem with transmission and distribution of electric energy. This also affects the gas suppliers because if the end users are not paying, how will the gas suppliers get value for the huge investments they have made (Gas Processing Plants, Cross Country Pipelines, Metering stations, etc). If the transmission and distribution problems are resolved and money is returned to the chain, we can kiss power sector problem goodbye.

Oga is debt recovery that difficult? All this debt recovery talk is just a load of crap.At least before they invested they ought to have planned on how to recover their debts and not just keep on using that as an excuse to fleece the populace. For example why can't they adopt a 10 year method of debt recovery in which they allocate prepaid meters to their customers and spread out existing debts on each recharge such that they could be getting 10% of the previous debt per year.
Also, they can lobby for legislation that makes meter bypassing a criminal offence with a very heavy fine/jail term. This will be a win win situation for everyone involved but I know those rogues at the DISCO'S don't want that to happen because of their crocked ways. I bet you if the DISCO'S continue with this current status quo, they will keep on complaining of debt and aren't going to recover shi-shi till Jesus comes

The FG did not sell the old debt to DISCos at takeover. They are however encouraged to recover same and remit 85% of the old debt to NELMCo(FG) and take 15% as incentive. Getting ur electricity billings over 10yrs is not ideal as the current law does not allow DISCos to build in Financing components into their bills. Just do a discount of 20billion in an inflationary clime like Nigeria and see how much is lost.
2. There are already laws in place on power theft but they are rarely enforced. Judges are quite lenient when it comes to power theft. This has made it pointless for discos to go thru the legal hassles. By the way, the largest debtors to most DISCos are MDAs, including Police, Army etc. Woe betide u to try and install prepaid meters for them. Or try cutting their light.

There are just too many problems in a lawless nation like ours and the situation in the power sector is nothing special. Its just a reflection of the hopeless situation of almost everything in our country.
