Nigeria has yet again been ‘disgraced’ internationally, following an assignment Harvard University gave to its students in which Nigeria was used as a case study of a failed African country.

The question Harvard University gave its students reads;

Africa is growing. Seven of the the ten fastest growing economies in the world are in Africa, and the continent’s largest economies are becoming less dependent on extractive commodities. The continent’s rising middle class has demonstrated a taste for consumer goods and technological innovation, and Africa’s population-currently more than a billion people- is booming and overwhelmingly young at a time when populations in other regions are shrinking and aging.

Nigeria, sub-saharan Africa’s largest economy, epitomizes both the promise and the problems the continent faces in the 21st century. The contry had failed to thrive for its first thirty years as an independent nation, despite having a developmental head start relative to countries like China and India, as well as hundreds of billions of dollars in oil revenue.. Now, after pathbreaking reforms followed by signs of retrenchment, Nigeria’s new President faced both vast opportunity and grave challenges. Would the country flourish or founder in this new era? We will analyze key reforms in Nigeria’s economy, significant political developments, and the choices facing the country’s fast-growing private sector.

1. Why did Nigeria fail to thrive between 1960 and 1999, particularly relative to China and India?

2. How would you characterize former President Obasanjo’s legacy?

3. Are you bullish or bearish on the next fifteen years for Nigeria? What would make you change your mind? What opportunities do you see? What are the challenges (and risks)

This is coming after a 15-year-old Nigerian girl was offered admission to the prestigious Harvard University in United States of America. Saheela Ibraheem is the 15-year-old daughter of a Nigerian immigrant family living in New Jersey, United States. Since news broke about Saheela’s incredible acceptance to 13 of American’s prestigious Universities, local and International media took interests in the teen’s success story.

Hating on what exactly?

A country that cannot boast of quality healthcare, constant electricity, good roads, security and is riddled with corruption, boko haram insurgency, high rates of poverty, crime etc?

You need to stop being delusional. Ordinary Ghana have better infrastructure. We are the laughing stock of Africa

What will we say of the great USA
where a child will carry gun into a school and murder as many people or when an innocent man will be thrown in jail for a crime he didn't commit but because of his skin color he is guilty, where a group of people still hold the ideology that whites are supreme and now they've formed a union to further the cause of this belief, where enslaving your fellow human was business and normal, where in order to grow they imperialize the weak and step on them as ladders to prosperity, where they sponsor assassinations and internal conflict to aid civil and economic unrest, where they create an epidemic and then sell the cure, where they continue to stockpile nuclear weapons but sanction those that dare to do so to, where they subjugate history in order to create a sense of incapability in a race or group to further benefit their idealisms and goals, where they ignore international law but see it fit to evade and turn people's homes to war zones, where where where
Demigods of our time
Almighty USA can do no wrong

Complex and relatively sophisticated Nigeria and South Africa are the only Nations worth studying in in Africa south of the Sahara, which is why when it comes to Africa statisticians keep picking on Nigeria. Nigeria is more interesting as a developing entity than South Africa. Every now and then for comparative purposes, they may throw in Botswana and Rwanda.

See the same China Peter Obi used as example during Presidential election debate and he was attacked. Imagine Nigeria was better than China back then, but today China is million years ahead of Nigeria. And someone will say that this nation is not cursed.

Dickhead, I really don't know what they are doing in nigeria because even nigerians are coming to Ghana in their thousands every day. If indeed they are Ghanaians, then I believe their company sent them there. or you don't know they are marketing a Ghana-made product?

Just because someone calls you a failure doesn't mean you are a failure.
You only become a failure when you decide to see yourself in a cloak of failure.

Nigeria is not a failed state, it's just a "slow thriving" country of men who are devilishly corrupt.

I was actually being sarcastic with the "ordinary" because Nigerians keep using that term to describe most African countries that have actually left us behind in terms of infrastructure

Do you know that even if nigerian educated people were given 20plot of lands to form a community in america, that place will still be a ghetto.

We should just admit, we cant build and organise basic stuff as a people.

@Nairalanders, What is your take?
America is a country with a similar nature with Nigeria, old slaves and immigrants or citizens which is similar to our numerous tribes,despite that they where able to combat this challenge to hit the position as world power,Nigeria on the other hand has not shown change in tribalism or religious clashes, our people don't know when to rebel or maybe they lack the guts,Nigeria doesn't have a college voting system and we count our votes by the number of people instead of by the number of states,in other words the similarities between Nigeria and america is so much but the difference is where the succeed we fail yes america is over a hundred to two hundred years older than Nigeria and 20times the size of Nigeria,at some point america had no oil but they built refineries as a means of trade knowing that African or Nigerian leaders are greedy and corrupt ,they foresaw our under development and knew our leader would not spend money to build refineries if they bought PMS at affordable prices, now sooner or later the major oil importing countries are going to stop importing oil,our country is still yet to come up with a plan to support the economy when oil stock crashes, thats why its a failed state. I fear for this nation its almost finished and we are all seeing it with no solution or revolution.
