How a regular 4 stroke engine works.

Most spark ignition engines since the dawn of motoring have employed a four-stroke thermodynamic cycle developed in the late 19th Century by a German engineer named Nikolaus Otto. But in more recent years, a modified version of this ‘Otto’ cycle has grown in popularity.

Commonly known as the ‘Atkinson’ cycle, it has been employed in all vehicles with Lexus Hybrid Drive technology and has now been adopted in some of the manufacturer’s latest high-performance models, such as the Lexus RC F.

Why is this the case, and what is the difference between these two cycles?

The Otto Cycle
Four-stroke engines have four separate phases within a traditional Otto cycle, produced by two revolutions of the crankshaft and precise valve and ignition timing. As you can see from the animation below, these phases are: 1) intake, 2) compression, 3) combustion and 4) exhaust. Each corresponds to a full piston stroke inside the cylinder.

The cycle begins with a downward piston stroke, which draws a mixture of air and vapourised fuel through the intake port into the combustion chamber. The upward stroke of the returning piston compresses this mixture to around one-tenth of its volume, at which point it is ignited by the spark plug. This explosion drives the piston downward in a stroke that gives the engine its thrust. The final return stroke of the cycle evacuates the spent gases via the exhaust port so that the process can begin again.

But while this relatively straightforward cycle produces a satisfactory power output, it is not the most fuel-efficient means of generating power from a four-stroke piston engine. That accolade goes to engines running the Atkinson cycle.

The Atkinson Cycle

Patented in 1882 by British engineer James Atkinson, the Atkinson cycle significantly improved the fuel-efficiency of a four-stroke spark ignition engine through one particularly ingenious modification.

The four basic phases of the Otto cycle remained but Atkinson introduced a new timing sequence to delay the closing of the intake valve during the compression stroke. Keeping the intake valve open slightly longer effectively reduced the engine’s displacement during the intake cycle but retained the full ratio of expansion in the combustion or power stroke.

In simple terms, the Atkinson cycle was designed to minimise the use of fuel during the intake stroke yet exploit the part of the cycle that generates power.

question I was waiting for is would the engine computer in the regular gasoline engine startup the Atkinson cycle engine?

Interactive session.

I believe it would. It would run the engine just like the normal engine. With all the intake, compression, Power and exhaust strokes happening as it should.

Bt i am a bit skeptical since the hybrid engine has a different cam profile and piston design different from the regular engine. That "might" change the way the engine will run.

Dis is off my head. Now leme gaan do my research.... cool

Wow. God saved you. During my stay in plateau, the number of security men(police, army, frsc, ffs, Civil defense) that are Manning jos (esp that terminus area) every Friday is excess. On Friday eh, if u do anyhow in jos, u go see anyhow.
I don't blame you for running away, I remember on Sunday, I was in ecwa church miango, Bassa L.G.A for church service and I was pressing my phone as the service was going on, I read a breaking news that a bomb nearly went off @ ecwa HQ in jos, na so I carry my bible comot. I changed church immediately.

The blood drinkers really did a whole lot of damage to Plateau State. I don't know if it will ever be the same cool peaceful lovely Plateau State we knew and read about when we were young.

Fulani herdsmen has finally disrupted the peace in plateau. But plateau state will always be my home. I still call my students and friends in plateau and they still call me, most of Facebook friends are from there. I only returned home after service because I couldn't get a job in plateau. If not, I no go step foot for Anambra State again.

Eya! Really an unfortunate situation. Wish that incident never happened during your service year. It would have allowed you to enjoy the serene Plateau. Lol all the same Jos is back to normal hopefully.

Nice suggestion but I think the Camry deal is already underway.... And the exhaust thing will create unnecessary stress....

One stone will be used to kill 2500 birds...

Get a Camry, while doing the necessary and possible leg works and general servicing, take down the engine and possibly gear, when on the ground change all changeables then install other engine.....

If both engines are even perfect, we may not have any need to return original Camry engine grin
grin

No stress really, removing a Toyota exhaust is as easy removing laces....

With the way Toyota ECU's are I don't think there would be much problem.....with just starting.
