2008, I started the long, painful journey towards learning web development. Since I had a day job, I knew that this process was going to consume my nights and weekends. And, since I had never taught myself any technical skills online before, I was aware that there were plenty of unimaginable challenges that would rear their ugly heads along the way. But here is what I could not anticipate: After using hundreds of written, youtube video and interactive tutorials, I found that the methods for teaching technical topics online were incredibly… primitive and insufficient. The State of Online Coding Tutorials There are thousands of tutorials written per year on HTML, CSS and JavaScript by developers with tens of thousands of years of collective experience. You would think that there would be a rich ecosystem with a variety of teaching methods and interactive tools. Not the case. Instead, coding tutorials simply repackage 20th century teaching techniques with 21st century technology. Video tutorials mimic a classroom lesson with a whiteboard. White-Board Teaching is good, but not sufficient, Video Tutorial is good but not enough! I was really shocked when the OP said “coding tutorials simply repackage 20th Century teaching techniques with 21st century technology”. It’s not okay when you give false info because of profit cause I’m sure OP must have seen an Udemy or Cousera course before, if not then how does he know what they repackaged! It’s unfortunate. adeniyi2020: Mr Adeniyi and Asalimpo, dont get me wrong, dont let us take this out of context, First i mentioned that i went through self learning as well, and listed how difficult it can be. Few online platforms have curated content, like Udemy and Cousera that you have mentioned, Most Online learners focus more on you-tube videos, because they dont have to pay which is not good enough. I have met people too who bought udemy courses yet get stocked, and lost enthusiasm, meaning ONLINE and SELF Learning is Good but it may not be good for everybody, few persons can confirm to that as well. However, We are not misleading anybody, if you thinks so, its never intended. The Other part you did not mention is how people learn the codes and syntax but can not transform it into real life project. Our intention is not to teach you and let you out the door, we want to expose our student the measure their skills with live projects and see were that leads us. No disrespect to all learning platforms, but our goal will be achieved with onsite training. Finally Thank you both for your observation |
