Messi is not a native of Spain. He is a South American, taken from Newells old boy at age 13. And joined Barcelona Academy where he graduated to the 1st team...
He can't be mistaken for a Catalina because he grow up there but despite his citizenship, he always make it clear that he want to play for Argentina and not Spain even when he was invited to represent Spain...

The difference is like:
Drogba playing for Asec Mimosa all his career and
Eto'o playing for Real Madrid all his life....
