My reaction based on this report:

Now if all these are true then,


I applaud the idea to rest Musa and Etebo due to those cards they picked up. They will both be very vital to the team in the K.O. rounds.

But this also gives us a chance finally to see a Mikel play deep as a DLP/Regista/CM(Xavi/Pirlo style) by taking Etebo's place alongside Ndidi in midfield. Iwobi obviously will keep his place as AM.

On the right, Moses Simon taking a rest means we get to finally see Samuel Kalu start and bring his usual Victor Moses-like style to the right.

Samuel Chukwueze on the left will be very interesting indeed. That should naturally be his position but can he whip in some fine crosses? He loves to cut in and his right foot is still not efficient enough to enable him cut in from the left as he would normally do from the right. But in all, it would be interesting to see.

But this is unless Kalu goes to the left wing to cut unto his right and Chukwueze goes to the right wing too. Time will tell. Kalu can use his left foot too although not as frequently or super-effectively as his right foot. But a Kalu return will almost certainly mean it is the right flank. Meaning Chukwueze will have to make do with the left flank. Been a while we had a left footer on the left for Nigeria. This means Onyekuru's wait for his Afcon bow will be prolonged still. But his time will come. He dorns our jersey #11 not for nought.

The report said nothing about the CF role meaning Ighalo will continue as the #9 and won't be rested.
I still hope to see either Osimhen or Onuachu at some point because Kalu is back now. Both are aerially superior to Ighalo and it would be sweet seeing Kalu sending in some good crosses for any of them to utilise. Kalu is the best crossing winger we have.


Resting Omeruo is also commendable. We need him 100% fit and fresh for the K.O rounds. Ekong can take his place for this final game alongside Balogun before falling back to his place on the bench.



Now remember, these are just my reactions based on if these reports are true.

I admit I like the line-up.

Ighalo as #9 (CF)

Chukwueze as #11 (LW)

Kalu back to #7 (RW)

Iwobi as #10 (AM)

Mikel as DLP/Regista (CM-pirloresque)

Ndidi as DM with licence to move up sometimes while Mikel sits and uses his world class positional discipline to shield in those moments Ndidi goes into the Final third as we saw against Guinea with Ndidi bombing forward and creating some chances.

The defence picks itself with Awaziem as RB, Aina as LB, and the temporary return of the Oyibo wall at CBs.

Finally, Daniel Akpeyi as GK.


We truly have depth. I love how we can mix it up and still present a strong starting XI. Keep in mind we still have an Onyekuru and John Ogu yet to taste action. Collins will be back soon enough by the time of the K.O rounds but I see him returning from the Q.Fs. but not a guarantee to start as Aina is yet to put a foot wrong at LB and Awaziem has simply gotten better in his adaptable role at RB.

Awaziem having Kalu on that right is same as having Simon Moses. Both Kalu and Simon have monstrous workrates higher than all our other wingers except Musa.

Iwobi has not been convincing yet in this tournament. People talk about Ighalo but Iwobi had the same opportunity to slot his teammate in but he was dillydallying on the ball. Even his first shot should have been passed to a better positioned player. I am thinking maybe his grafting took some energy from him but you can't say he has been above average yet.

Very unappealing match. Both Cameroon and Ghana can't play football. So far it's only the North Africans and Nigerians that are playing good football. The rest are all muscle no brain

Iwobi's biggest problem is his lack of consistency...

Today he is good.. tomorrow he is poor....
