Former presidential candidate, Oby Ezekwesili, has blamed the economy for the beggarly attitude of gatemen and security personnel in public places, Igbere TV reports.


Mrs Ezekwesili tweeted severally on Saturday lamenting the spate at which security personnel channel energy into accosting incoming and departing guests with the aim of getting tips to supplement their income.


“Pretty sure that one is not the only Nigerian extremely alarmed and crying about the dehumanizing effect of the economy on some of our people. When mobbed by gatemen, security personnel and their other colleagues whose Good Morning is Give Me Money , I feel very sad for us all.


“The rate at which this culture of begging by gatemen and security personnel has become the ‘creative supplement’ to their income is a proxy for what’s going on with the rest of society. It sure cannot be easy to throw away your dignity & devote most of your time @ work begging,” she said.


The former education minister said the beggarly acts were indicators of ‘economic depression’, urging political leaders to fix the economy.


“The indicators of economic depression are all over for the thoughtful and intuition political leaders to see. Those gatemen and security personnel operating Beggars Units across the land are a sample of many more others that we don’t see. This country is in CRISES. Fix it,” Ezekwesili said.

As a matter of fact, most Nigerians are beggarly. I heard someone saying with Buhari, things are hard, I asked why he said so and he was like nowadays, when you call someone to ask for money, they will tell you there is no money that things are hard, but it wasn't so during PDP era. He went further to say he would prefer a corrupt government which money would flow than this kind of government we are seeing now.

She complained bitterly that funding of these school was consuming a disporprotionate amount of money compared to other areas within the education sector and the primary beneficiaries were students from middle class backgrounds.

Majority of students in these schools are from middle class homes. Three (actually 4 but he didn't go beyond JSS 2) of my siblings went to them. Two went to Ijanikin, 1 to Idoani and another to Queens College. I was in International School Ibadan while I had siblings who did their A levels in England. We aren't exactly poor are we

Obasanjo's son was in Ijanikin and Abachas daughter went to Queens College. Chukwumerije's son was in Ijanikin.

She said it was disporprotionate and it mainly benefitted the children of the rich. I know a man who was told to pay 250,000 for his daughter to enter Queens college.

The vast majority are from middle class homes, people who can afford a private education for their children
