You are employed to generate money to the company, customer retention and satisfaction should be on your head. There are other ways he could have made his point without using this cartoon. Just that Nigerian companies have no database or statistics of online and offline readers who follow their organizations. Web Analytics would have done justice to this because the writer will know the number of readers who are Christians, who buy or read Punch Newspaper, location, region and all before putting up what he did.

Punch sacked the Editor because the rapist illustrated in the cartoon is a fellow cultist of the Punch mgt. The cartoon also depicts the symbol of another cult group which is different from that if the rapist and the Punch mgt. So it is a clash of two cult group.

Aside the offensive cartoon, the article violated the journalistic ethic of neutrality and fair hearing. When there is an issue, no matter how emotional you feel about it, at least wait for formal investigations to be concluded and the accused person pronounced guilty by the authorities vested with such powers before taking sides.
Media professionals ought to realize there is a world of difference between social media and mainstream media.

I agree such shouldn't have been published but punch went too far. Even the bible talks about forgiveness. Sure they would have begged for forgiveness. Simple apology would have been accepted. When you want social media to be monitored, the question of privacy emerges. This is dealt with the Data Protection Act in English law. Do you have a robust data protection act in Nigeria to protect against invasion of privacy?

Freedom of speech is only limited by hate speech or libel or slander.


Freedom of speech does not apply to the contract between an employer and an employee. So the newspapers have every right to sack the editor.
