Murtala Muhammed Airport Sets Up Task Force For Traffic Management by AutoJoshNG: 1:45pm On Jul 11, 2019 |
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria notifies passengers and other airport users that in a bid to foster effective landside traffic management, the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos has constituted a task force to ensure improvement in the flow of vehicular traffic. The objective of the task force, which is made up of officers from the aviation security department and other relevant security agencies shall be to control vehicular movement, prevent unauthorized parking at terminal forecourts/curbsides and enforce the drop-off/pick-up zone policy of the airport. Passengers and drivers are therefore advised to please cooperate with the officials and ensure compliance to the guidelines given by the officers. I always have concerns about seemingly 'good moves/plans' like this!!1 WHAT would you tell the military/police/naval or airforce people who park on the curbsides with fully loaded gun-wielding men I have a good idea which I proposed to them before: GET A STANDING ORDER FROM THE CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF, CHIEF OF NAVAL STAFF, POLICE IG, CHIEF OF AIR STAFF and other top paramilitary heads to endorse these orders.......NO ONE BELOW THEIR rank would ever give issues!!! PERIOD!!! 1 Like |

What happened to the massive underground parking lot beneath the MMIA airport? It used to be functional in the past, and passengers could take the lift, directly from the terminal to the basement car park. This helped to curtail traffic at the international airport. What happened later? They closed it up and allowed it to rot. It is still there, empty and rotting away in darkness. Next, they put in place passenger buses, to carry travellers from the airport to the open space car park, located several metres away from the building terminal. Cars were parked in the open space car park, and intending travellers had to join the buses to the airport terminal to board their flights. This helped to curtail traffic. After a while, those luxurious buses started breaking down, and only few ones were made available to passengers. Long queues then started to emerge. Traffic management became a nightmare at the international airport, as all kinds of cars were allowed to drive straight up the ramp leading to the arrival and departure halls. Until we get the fundamental basics right in this country, we will just waste time creating stupid rules to treat the symptoms, instead of curing the disease of traffic congestion, from the roots. 3 Likes |

laudate:They should just sell the airport. As far as you have Nigerian civil servants running the place, it will never work. Compare that airport to the local one owned by bi Courtney and you see the difference. Meanwhile faan wants to collect it too. 1 Like |

That structure they are building on that airport road is impressive. When it finished it will be too impressive for an airport that looks like a dilapidated shopping mall. Obviously, it will ease traffic when it becomes functional. |

bendike:Sell it...... in order to achieve what? In many countries, the airports are run by govt agencies, and not private individuals, and such airports are well run. It has little to do with govt, but the people who are appointed to run the airport. If the right people are put in charge, and given the freedom, tools and resources to run it, it will work. Changi Airport in Singapore, is rated as one of the best airports in the world. It is still owned and run by the government of Singapore. Do their own civil servants have two heads? All the govt owned parastatals and companies sold off in the past, what happened to them? Many of them are either comatose or dead. This same MMIA was well run in the 80s all through the 90s. Why did it suddenly go down? Wasn't it civil servants that were in charge when it was well run in the past? We need to ask relevant questions. The major local and international airports in South Africa are owned by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). Guess what? That company's majority shareholder is the South African Government which owns 74.6% of its' shares. Geneva Airport is the international airport of Geneva, the second most populous city in Switzerland. Guess what? The owners and operators of that airport still remains the City of Geneva, which is the equivalent of a state govt in Nigeria. Yet, it is well run, and turns a tidy profit each year. I repeat: do their own civil servants have 2 heads?? |

laudate:Yes sir. They have 2 heads. And mmia has never been run well right from inception in the 80ies and 90ties. Over the years Nigeria has suffered a breakdown in work ethics, morals, selfishness etc. The attitude of it is not my "father work" syndrome. Everybody in the civil service is a thief all out to get what he can. Go and investigate. Most civil servants live above their means. Even effcc officials are millionaires. It is not curse but we have gone so rotten government cannot run any services or business. Eg. Look at the shoprite car park toll booth or lekki concession toll gate how efficiently they are ran and compare to that of Lagos Airport. They have the toll machine there but they will "chook" it so it will break down and hence sell paper tickets printed by them. As regards government assets privatized before, most were not sold properly but to cronies who did not have the expertise or financial wherewithal. Few are successful though eg Intel, mm2 etc. How come Nigeria cannot run a national carrier when ghana, rwanda, even Syria own airlines? I stand to be corrected but most airports, even sea ports are privatized in Europe. At least I know a Nigerian lead the consortium that bought Heathrow. |

bendike: Oga, MMIA was well run from the 80s to the 90s. I grew up and still met old newspaper reports that had been carefully preserved in our library, which covered events of that era. MMIA was built after the design of Schiphol airport in Amsterdam. Please ask thcose who worked in the aviation industry during that era, and stop fueling your mind with the misinformation and hype that passes for fact, being peddled by the indomie generation of these days. I had uncles who were pilots in the days when Nigeria Airways had the largest operational fleet, in West Africa. So I got first hand info from them, and also had the privilege to read their written reports. The number of privately run airports in Europe are still much fewer than the number of publicly owned and run airports, located in different parts of the world, which are efficient and we'll maintained. Do the math. Public enterprises were well run in the past. The rot started at some point in the mid-90s upwards. We all need to go back and study what went wrong, and fix it. I do not deny that ShopRite car parks are well run, but public car parks can also be well run, if the right pegs are put in the right holes, and transparency as well as accountability us enforced! |

laudate: OK. I knew when that airport was being built. Dad had a merc 450slc coup and the runway was the best place to floor your car. I started flying through MMIA in1979. British Calidornia to UK as a kid so I saw it all. First hand. I assure you that the first few months was because the airport was new. It immediately started detiorating. Nigeria airways initially was doing fine along with the first privately run international airline owned by chief victor Vanni until corruption and Nigerian mentality killed them all. Nigeria airways you will buy first class ticket on our 747 jets. The pilot will refuse you climbing upstairs to the first class because he has kept his girl friends there. You will book flight but on your return journey you will be stranded abroad because no money to fuel the aircraft. Passengers have to contribute. Nigeria airways officials will buy staff tickets for 5% the normal cost. Government officials will refuse to pay or delay flights as a big man is comming. Bros I saw it all personally.

bendike:The rot in Nigeria Airways started during the 2nd Republic. Before that, Nigeria Airways was doing rather well. What happened after that? The politicians connived with some of the airline's unscrupulous staff, to mismanage the firm. Nigeria Airways took on the name in 1971 and once had 30 aircraft, including the best available aeroplanes at the time... A lot of the gossip that emanated from that era which you recycled here, were grossly exaggerated, and most of it took place during the 2nd Republic. I still recall family and friends travelling in 1992, on first class tickets via Nigeria Airways, and getting good seats, on a smooth flight. Nobody is denying that Nigeria Airways did not deteriorate, and ended up with huge debts before it was finally shut down, but at a certain period before things went downhill for the airline, it was run by professionals, during the era of Gowon up till when OBJ became military head of state. And it was profitable during that era. I still maintain that airports in many parts of the world are run by public officials, employed by govt. And their airports work! It is just our own people that have refused to do things properly. |
