Hello everyone, please is it possible to be preparing for TEF and Ielts at the same time. Is there going to be clash of languages in my brain? Can I come out well in both exams? Thank you.

Doable. Especially if you have a decent level in both languages.

However, multitasking reduces efficiency generally speaking.

IELTS exams are done so frequently and the results are out so quickly that you can be done and dusted in a month with full concentration....then you'll have time to face TEF.

My advise.....you really don't want to be worrying about preparing for 2 exams at the same time....do English first, get it out of the way then do the French one.

Good luck!

Bellerin:

The tests (and therefore strategies) for each are quite different.

EO (Speaking): TCF 3 tasks, TEF 2 tasks.
EE (Writing): TCF 3 tasks, TEF 2 tasks.
CO (Listening): TCF 39 questions, TEF 60 questions
CE (Reading): TCF 39 questions, TEF 50 questions

It may be best to prepare for each test in a different way.

But generally yes for overall French.

Hi everyone, Permit to introduce myself. I'm Webcontractor grin.
I have always wanted to learn a second language but never had the chance. Maybe EE presents that opportunity.
I have taken time to read the thread from page one,and I'm considering writing the TCF as against TEF due to faster processing.
Unfortunately, no one here has shared their experience with TCF, but I'd go for it seeing that i am neutral (No TEF Experience)
My french knowledge is zero at the moment. I can only recall a few words in french like merci beacoup, bonjour, Cava, Qui.That's just about all I know at this time.
The last time I studied french was in secondary school, a hundred years ago. I am hoping that I can get to a high B2 or C1 by December.(I really need all those points).
From what I gather, listening is usually the hardest for beginners, just like with the IELTS.
I would be happy if anyone can recommend some classic french movies that I can watch at my spare time.

Thanks Mamaroon, njbybrthnly, Bellerin, etrange, DanMisla and a host of others for all your contributions.
@Mamaroon, wishing you success in your upcoming exam.
I will be following this thread actively.

Regards.

Thanks sir.

You can kuku do it by Dec if you put your heart, mind and soul into it. NJ did it.

You could also try listening to RFI radio, you may not understand what is being said initially, but I think if you start with news it will help as you already have an idea of the topics being discussed internationally each day....sorry I don't watch movies so no idea....between football and cartoons that my kids and hubby watch.....no time left for me.......but there's TV5 on DSTV, they may have some movies....I think

Bonne Chance !

Fire down sir. All within reach. For movies ehn, there's cine mon amour Lagos. They have a FB page. They screen French movies with subtitles for free at Bogobiri (Once monthly). They'll do a final screening this weekend before handing over to AF Lagos who will be doing the screenings henceforth at the Mike Adenuga centre.

If you are a Jack Sparrow, checkout torrent9(dot)cz

Take it easy with movies tho...especially if you don't have enough French. It might make you erroneously think you aren't making progress. Bonne chance!

TV5 looks like a good option. Cartoon sounds interesting. Will definitely look into that. Thank you.

Very Apt.
I had a similar experience, I watched a french movie and felt they were talking too fast and couldn't pick out any words. I'm a fan of Jack grin
Cine mon amour sounds promising for meeting francophiles but I would prefer to watch the movies with the option of pause and replay for better comprehension.
I'm thinking that french versions of Classic English Movies will be a great start.

Many Thanks

Hi French people,

Thank you all for your contributions to this thread.

I’ve decided to write this exam, by God’s grace I’ll get the 42 points *phew*. My CRS is 438 today, I lost six points on my birthday last month.

I have very little knowledge of French o, but I’m very interested in the language. I was hoping to learn when I move to Canada, but now CRS wahala. (I’ve always wanted to settle in a French city when I get to Canada, which is why I don’t want to try the PNP route).

I don’t have a private tutor still, haven’t been able to find any. So I’m starting by studying myself.

@Mamaroon, please collect hand . How did your exam go

@WebContractor you’re welcome. I’m hoping to push myself to write the exam in December just like you. Or January.

@OliviaPope1, glad to know that someone is working on the same timeline. From previous conversations, the Michael Thomas French Learning Package seems to have high recommendations. I hope to get them soon.

I incidentally mentioned to a friend that I wanted to attend a french school, only to find out that she speaks french fluently. She has offered to help with conversations and doesn't seem to think that I need to attend French school. I was encouraged because I currently can't fit french school into my schedule.

Bonne Chance

malheureusement, oui. :-(
All factors considered, my CRS was @ 431, with English as first language in the EE profile. I could retake both IELTS/TEF and aim higher, or I could make French my first language, score 359, and get invited by Ontario.
I took the 2nd option.

Hi DM! I keep going through that guy's CRS over and over again in my head and I reckon the reason I thought 30 points wasn't added to him yet was because yours dropped by a significant amount when you changed from english to french as first language: 431 to 359. Why was that? It doesn't matter now obviously ....with the OINP and ITA in the bag and OUR PPR and COPR on the way...but the thing is giving the mathematician in me sleepless nights grin

grin grin grin
In IELTS, I scored three CLB 10s and one 9.
In TEF, it was CLB 9, one 8 and two 7s.

The magic is in the different results. Its a bit like having improving an IELTS score of 8, 7, 7, 6.5 to one of 8, 7, 7, 7. That difference of 0.5, moving from CLB 8 to 9...can be quite plenty o.

The 30 extra points accrue so long as you get min of CLB 7 in French and CLB5 and above in English: it doesn't matter which one you list as primary language.

Wait ooo...aren't you supposed to be studying French? Wetin make you de calculate CRS :-)
Re: All TEF Candidates For Canada Immigration, Let's Meet Here! by DanMisla: 4:15pm On Jul 18, 2019
From what you wrote here...you kinda can see why, can't you? He probably would get more points if he had CLB9 and above in all the tests...in at least one of either language.
This sha...is enough for Ontario. I won't be writing any other exam, if I were him.

But, I wonder why he hasn't gotten an NOI all these months. There've been almost 15 draws since Oct 2018.
Its strange.

Mamaroon:

With your current IELTS and TEF (which is brilliant, by the way), with all else being equal your CLB equivalent for IELTS LRWS is CLB 8 8 8 10 from LRWS 7.5 6.5 6.5 7.5

French: you have CO and CE CLB 9 and above in the other 2 are CLB 8 and CLB 7
