Turkey has taken the first delivery of a controversial Russian missile defense system, angering USA and potentially triggering sanctions from Washington.

The shipment of S-400 Missile Defence System components arrived Turkey via Mukted Military airbase in the capital Ankara on Friday, the Turkish defense ministry said in an announcement on Twitter.

U.S. officials see Ankara’s purchase of the missile system as a worrying pivot toward warmer ties with Moscow. Turkey’s integration of the Russian S-400 system is also viewed as a direct threat to the security of America’s Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jet program.
Turkey has helped to build the F-35s, paid $1.4bn and intends to buy at least 100 of the planes.

However, Pentagon officials have said they do not want the hi-tech jets to be located near Russian engineers, who would be working in Turkey to install and support the S-400 systems as they can collect sensitive data about the technology of the F-35 Jets.

“NATO countries need to procure military equipment that is interoperable with NATO systems. A Russian system would not meet that standard,”a U.S. Source said.

Should the S-400 commence operations by October this year, Turkey would face consequences for pursuing the deal and sanctions would come under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, which President Donald Trump signed in August 2017. At least 13 countries have expressed interest in buying a Russian missile system, despite the potential for triggering U.S. penalties.

The S-400 is viewed as the best missile available for engaging targets at longer distances (up to 400km), able to track and destroy stealth bombers like F-35, aircraft and cruise missiles. Turkey reportedly paid $2.5bn to acquire the S-400s and had argued that the S-400 is more sophisticated and cheaper than its American variant.

How The S-400 Works: A long-range radar tracks potential targets and relays data to a command vehicle. The command vehicle orders a launch and selects the best placed launch pad, usually cited on a truck. A separate engagement radar then guides the missile to the target.

It is not really his fault, Obama refused to sell the Patriot Missile to Turkey due to the US refused to transfer that technology to Turkey and they opted for Russia's Defence system.

I ask, is it not what they refused that Russia is willing to do? The world now has options in China and Russia for trade, politics and defence.

Correct but Obama did not sell to erdogan for some reasons and erdogans foreign policy is already drifting away from the west.The founding father of turkey pushed turkey to the west instead of East,Truth is erdogans policy is hurting turkey and the people are suffering and that's why after many years opposition party took over Istanbul and that was a direct message to ergodan because who ever controls Istanbul controls turkey

Erdogan is always fighting every body, from Germany to France to Greece to Cyprus and now he is illegally drilling in waters near Cyprus and EU would soon hammer him with sanctions and remember EU is Turkish largest trade partner not china and not Russia

Erdogan can't have the most advanced fighter jet in the world (F35) and still have the S400 because it would enable Russia gather some secrets about the F35s vulnerability and remember those planes were created because of Russia.
