South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Aaron Motsoaledi, has hinted that the former apartheid country may add the trio of Nigeria, India and China to its list of countries that can enter South Africa without a visa.

Last week, at a press conference, the Minister announced the inclusion of seven countries on the list. These are Qatar, United Arab Emirates, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Ghana and Sao Tome and Principe.

Mr Motsoaledi explained that the nations were added to the list so as to boost tourism in South Africa.

“Tourism will soar if we relax visa requirements for entry into South Africa. We know that Tourism is very important for job creation,” he said.

“Out of the 193 countries who are member states of the United Nations, the Department has granted visa-free status to 75 countries. Of these 16 are in our continent and are SADC members and 59 are from all over the world,” he added.

He said, “We will immediately enter into discussions with them about how a visa-free regime will work. We still have some homework to do for three countries whose combined populations make up close to 30 percent of the world’s population, this is, China, India and Nigeria.

“While we are busy tackling the matter of the three countries, we shall this financial year increase two and half times the number of people who work for Home Affairs to process visas in both China and India. We shall increase two times the number of people who process visas to our country in Nigeria,” the Minister said.

To make things easier for tourists, the deputy minister of Home Affairs, Njabulo Nzuza, said an e-Visa regime would be fully introduced in November 2019.

The e-Visa system will allow tourists and visitors to South African apply for their visas online. These applications will then be sent to a central adjudication and approval office, while the prospective visitors “sit at the comfort of their own home”.

The new system will also open South Africa as a desirable destination through the ease of its visa systems, the deputy minister said, adding that it will have huge tourism growth implications for the country.

A major part of South Africa's economy relies on its tourism. Imagine Nigeria, India and China make up 30% of the world's population but have no visa free relationship with South Africa. That just shows you that it's not about population size rather its about dollars and cents.

Americans can travel to South Africa without visa but South Africans need visa to enter America. They are not complaining because Americans are known to travel the globe and spend money that boost local economies. The GDP of California alone is bigger than that of the entire continent of Africa combined. So you see, money rules.

South Africa shouldn't grant us visa free status into their country, let us remain in Nigeria and develop it to be the envy of the world.

Welcome initiative. The only problem is Nigerians WILL abuse the gesture. Red-eyed Nigerians go spoil market further there. Truth be told, a lot of Nigerians need proper and solid orientation before traveling abroad. They need to be told engaging in crimes not only damages our nation's image but it shuts the doors against genuine and hardworking Nigerians. They also need to be told of the importance of respecting the laws of any country they go to. If we respect ourselves, people will respect us.

You are right, there would be a spike in travelling there from Nigerians and mostly not for tourism as intended but for stay.

u are the only sensible person on this thread...

However, SA should be careful including Nigeria into that list, cause Nigerians are so criminally minded, they will just flood their country and do worse than they are doing now, all the crimes and criminality u can mention being perpetrated by Nigerians would quadruple, consequent of our inordinate quest for riches at the detriment and expense of every other thing.
That's Nigerians for u, that's how we perceive life over here, and the reason for our perpetual failures and retrogression as a state, which has no end in sight..
That's Nigerians for you. Avoid them if you want to advance, mentality over here is very depraved and perverted.
