The COO deals with the internal workings of the organization while the CEO or like the partners in a law firm, are the face of the firm.


The COO is multi-talented and sometimes knows how to make things work more than the CEO. Donna is the engine room of that firm. Everyone loves her. She even know how to settle legal disputes between their firms and others. Making her a COO is a wise and legit decision. It had nothing to do with bad script.

I worked in corporate Nigeria for 14 years, and not all the coos I saw were tied to the core business. I was in downstream oil and gas. We have had coos from ICA backgrounds, from project management, and some other depts I cannot remember right now. It was our last / most recent coo who was actually from the core of the business - retail.

In the end imho your coo is a high end admin officer fo4 an enterprise

A COO has to understand the core of a business.

If it is a general business of course, anyone from any background can be a COO within the business.

But for something specialized like Law or auditing, only a professional should be a COO.


The oil and gas example you just made does not help your point. At the end of the day, one of the biggest oil tycoons in Nigeria is a glorified tailor.
