Use of plastics can't be totally banned, the government just need to control the production rate and allow recycling to flourish in the country. Las las everything will be alright.

.No country is free from environment menace it just depend on how it is approached
Be alright how exactly? We are killing earth and doing nothing about it but for some strange reason we believe we will be alright. How exactly? Even as developed as America and Western Europe they are treating this menace with carelessness. We will surely destroy the earth by our actions and inactions and wherever we relocate to, Mars or any planet, will suffer similar fate until we are wiped out.

Is iron the only material for making straws as an alternative to plastic
Before plastics were discovered, what were people using for bags?

Sir, I'll like an answer to that your last question. Before plastic, what were people using as bags, and why the shift from whatever it was to plastics?

That is why we're looking for alternatives. Don't say there are no alternative. Say there is no alternative yet. Imagine how rich you'll become if you discover an alternative... That's positive thinking
there's solution but in Nigeria I don't think we have facilities

Brilliant.
Ecobank is doing this already.

Strange how I have never seen or heard of this.
They need to start advertising this campaign on the radio and possibly TV so there can be a wider audience and thus more bottles would be cleared.
Nigerians simply love money

O bro you got it wrong. By green, I don't mean plants, I mean renewable resources... Green is a term in sustainable development referring to renewable resources. The leaves of plants clearly cannot replace plastics but natural rubber (gotten from plants) has potential.

Thanks for the enlightenment. I was referring to the alternative you used as example.

I also disagree with those who talked about reducing the production of plastics. These plastics being produced are used for different purposes. For us to reduce its production, question becomes what will be used for those purposes these plastics were hitherto used for. Except if its outright recycling to replace production of new ones

We can make one. You and I... When we start doing some things ourselves rather than waiting for the government or someone else to do it, there will be very few problems in Nigeria. That's the spirit of entrepreneurship, positive thinking.

What tha bleep are u saying. Is the natural rubber degradable?? I only knw DAT it can b recycled same as the plastics. I suggest use of PAPER BAGS as dy use in the USA.. At least its degradable and used paper can be renewed.

Then it’s going to lead to inflation in price of goods and services

I think the plastic we are talking about here is mainly plastic bottles. If you limit it to this area and then instead of industries producing preform you convert them to recycling industries to be sold lesser or at a similar price to what preforms are sold at. I don't see the reason for inflation infact if it could reach a stage where we could be importing from neighboring countries plastic bottle for recycling and we're looking at serious job creation/ business opportunities here

What he listed above isn’t realistic, the only way is proper recycling
Nothing can replace plastic and Infact the case is in uk court right now to lift ban on plastic straw because iron straw killed one blind woman after she fell on it
Nothing can replace plastic it’s just too useful
The Chinese invented plastic bag made from cassava and maize starch but it turned out to be almost the same,it won’t decompose easily
How do you ban bottle water and sachet water ? What do we use after that ?
90% of products are packaged in plastic related materials, how do you ban all these? Even most pen are made of plastic, how do you do it? It’s just impossible
No country is going to be successful banning it
If we look at Paper bag it’s not that useful so there is practically no alternative at the moment

You asked a very salient question

,"How can we ban bottle water and sachet water, what will be used after that? ".... That's the point those talking about banning haven't considered.

I agree with your first assertion, Proper "and Total" recycling

Bro we're in the internet. You should confirm from Google if natural rubber is degradable or not. Don't mistake natural rubber for synthetic rubber though...

The problem with this is that paper can't be used for most of the things plastic is currently being used for. Hence, we need an alternative that can do the same job as plastics, but at the same time degradable. A kinda dicey situation, lol.

Okay, I'm sorry to interject. Don't forget the reason we left use of natural rubber to synthetic rubber was to save the environment (rubber plants). Are you saying we go back to those rubber plants? Imagine how many rubber plants will ultimately end up destroyed to meet just Nigeria's demand, not to talk of the world, taking into consideration the fact that rubber trees aint like vegetables that can be planted and harvested within a short period of time

simply impose tax on those plastic bottles, so it wont be easy to purchase,

just follow whatever is being done in the western world, i dont why our leaders even travel abroad and still dont have directions??

We have a lot of arable lands that we can use for the mass production of rubber. Even if we don't want to farm traditionally, we can create microbes that synthesis rubber (through genetic engineering). Btw rubber is just an example of alternatives. You can always bring more

Nice article OP wink

Sighs.. I'm passionate about a safer environment.

Plastic pollution is one tough menace And Nigeria has a looooooooong way to go. We don't even know how to dispose our plastic wastes properly, let alone find alternatives.

First, more people have to be enlightened on proper waste disposal, reuse and recycle measures. As it stands, recycling is still a good solution.

When the government is ready to tackle the issue, I think policies that will put industries to change their packages to carton papers as much as possible will help too.

Shops like Shoprite can use reusable paper bags that people will have to pay a token for. If I have to pay for a paper bag every time I shop, I'll definitely keep it clean and take it there the next time I shop (I already do this, I have fine plastic bags of various sizes I use to shop and I don't collect new ones, esp the small black ones) Not everyone will care but plastic wastes will reduce.

The point is, we should stop new production of plastics, reuse and recycle the existing ones while we seek a lasting alternative. I believe things will get better in years to come sha.. Slow but steady.

Honestly, some ministers only exist for paper works. They don't care about doing significant things. Even something as crucial as providing enough big waste bins on our roads na error for Ministry of Environment undecided

I think the first step should be how to clear the environment of these plastic,How to separate household waste(banana peel, cellophane, plastic, stainless steel) and where to dispose. And re-orentation(It's so disgusting to see a paper with feaces on it)

So how do we get ourselves to do what you propose, which is not textbook theory?

www.nairaland.com/attachments/6480871_images5_jpegccec210b148f724009015b514894c923

The only way we can do something about this is to divert our attention from the executive and legislative, and make the judiciary more powerful and even more independent. Then we can prosecute any leader that takes #500 that isn't his own.. In a country like Nigeria, this is just a textbook theory yet again..

LETS JUST PRAY

Op, thanks for a topic like this. The plastic problem is a global one due to the fact that plastics do not degrade. To solve this problem, a handful of innovators have come up with a biodegradable option, looks like plastic but it’s made from corn or cassava but the limitations in this option is higher cost of production, it costs 60% more according to an article I read. One company is Indonesia is driving the campaign to implement this biodegradable product and they are increasing their product line to include more items.

I believe strongly that going the biodegradable route is the best way to tackle this menace. If one can find a way to reduce the cost of production.
