Herdsmen have a right to live and move anywhere in Nigeria as long as they are legal migrants& law abiding. So far, they haven't been law abiding. A quick reminder

Nigerians are primitive people who only get excited when tribal issues come up. They are more or less like monkeys. Only the reasonable will understand that Obaseki is saying all these to win the support of Edo people in the wake of his political struggle with Oshimole. Nigerian politicians are good psychologists.They know what to do to deflect off attention from their misrule. It is a typical divide and rule tactics.

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki said his administration will not avail the federal government land for the contentious Ruga settlement in Edo State.

The Governor spoke while giving a lecture on the topic “Challenges of Pastoralism and International Migration for Sustainable Peace and Development: Edo State Experience” at the Department of State Services Institute of Security Studies (Executive Intelligent Management Course 12), in Abuja.

He said the narrative that the pastoral movement and farmer/headers clashes are not related to the security challenges in Nigeria is not true.

His words: “In Edo State, we have found so-called herdsmen with maps in the forests, they clearly cannot be herdsmen who are dependent on their livelihood from their animal assets; that cannot be.

“I think it is important in the context of this discourse to make that distinction between conflict as a result of economic activities, separate from deliberate conflict that is related to other issues like insurgency and terrorism.”

The Governor said over the years the state has had issues of pastoralists or herdsmen who have come to parts of the South, Edo State using grazing routes and mixing with locals.

“Our approach is, animal husbandry is a business just like we have poultry, piggery or what have you, so from that perspective, we want to now upgrade agricultural practices as it relates to livestock.

“During the era of General Babangida, he set up ranches in Edo; we have one in Igarra and several parts of the state. They are either privatized or left fallow, so we are talking to people who purchased them to see how they can be re-activated.

“For us, because it is business like any other private business, the state should not really have much to except we create an enabling environment for those people we want to invest in livestock business.

“So, the issue of giving state land for livestock, it won’t happen in Edo State.

“However, for individuals who have land and they want to go into livestock business like we are supporting people who are doing cassava and others, we as government will support them.”

On how to resolve the incessant herders/farmers conflict, he said: “The Sambisa Grazing Reserve (4800 ha) is an ideal and symbolic place to take-off by establishing a ranch run by the military.

“It would significantly improve the security situation in the zone and encourage cooperation between pastoralists and the military.
“In the North West, the military should also be encouraged to create ranches in the Gidan Jaja Grazing Reserve (565,000 ha) for the same purpose of improving security and cooperation with pastoralists,” the Governor said.

Obaseki said violent extremism, recurrent herder-farmer conflicts, cattle rustling, armed banditry, violent cross-border crimes, insurgency, illegal migration and other forms of crimes have “threaten the fabric of our country. ”

According to him, national cohesion is seriously threatened by the conflict “as many farmers and pastoralists have lost their lives and property in several orgies of violence.

“As we gather here for this lecture, so many Nigerians are living in fear of attack or reprisal attacks due to the growing herders-farmers’ conflict,” he said.

We want peace, yet we do not want to make sacrifice and concessions .So the senseless clashes and killings should continue.

Edos aren't yorubas.
Yorubas hail from Edo state.

For instance, Eko( Lagos state) was named by the Binis. Eko has no known yoruba meaning but has an Edo meaning which is camp area which edos used as a resting area during trade with other now West African countries.

Same with Idumota (no Yoruba meaning) in lagos a corrupted Edo name of Idumwun ota meaning Ota village/ community.

Ancient Bini Empire stretched westward farther than Ghana.

These Herdsmen have the right to go to any part of the Nigeria to do their business so long as they respect the laws of the state that is hosting them.

But in the case of the herdsmen they are not law abiding and any state that want to make progress will not accommodate a trouble maker that has committed series of large scale murder while moving freely with AK47 rifles without the federal authority under President Muhammadu Buhari prosecuting them .

Again lands in Nigeria is not vested in the federal government.

It is the state that owns land in Nigeria.

If the state says it is not welcoming the herdsmen to be settled under the Ruga Settlement Plan.

There is nothing the federal government can do it has to respect the final decision of the state.

President Buhari has no constitutional power to force Ruga on any state in Nigeria.

Where the federal government has control is only FCT Abuja.

Each state in Nigeria has the constitutional power to make laws that will guide the peace of the state.

Your argument is laced with a heavy dose of tribalism. Ruga was proposed to solve herder/farmers crisis. The federal government never tried to imposed it on any state contrary to what people are saying. I understand the feelings of Nigerians towards Ruga,but it is totally wrong to suggest that the states were forced to accept it. As you claim, what then is the meaning of being forced to accept Ruga when the various state governors are exercising their rights to reget it?The federal government has suspended Ruga and moved on,so I don't understand why the governors are still saying it. Perhaps some of the governors want to use it for political gains. If the governors have exerted the same amount of energy they are exerting on Ruga of a thing on building their states, Nigeria would have moved forward. No development occurs in a society where both the rulers and the ruled are foolish. As a people our IQs are just to low to build and innovate.

You are too myopic to see the larger picture. Ruga is a jihadist crusade to invade, take over and subjugate other ethnic groups who happen to be mostly Christians. If you don't know this, then you need help. Unless of course you are part of them.
Ruga is a tribal and religious crusade. They have no place in Christian communities across Nigeria. Any state idiotic enough to cede lands to them, their people will become slaves in their own indigenous lands in the near future.
