Nigerian Air Force set-up first oversea base in Nigér Republic, deploys fighter jets

To boost the fight against the dreaded Boko Haram and ISWAP terror organization ravaging the region, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has established a new forward base at Diffa Airport, Nigér Republic. Following the development, the NAF has deployed it’s ATR-42 Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft as well as multiple Alpha jets for ISR and air interdiction missions

The newly formed base is expected to reduce reaction time by the Air Force when confronting the deadly sect since Diffa is closer to the epicentre of conflict zone than the Air Task Force 105 Composite Group based in Maiduguri as well as the 75th Strike Group operating in Yola.

Niger republic which is a member of the Nigerian-led Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) already possesses two Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoot close air support aircraft, one Mil Mi-24 Hind assault helicopter, as well as various ISR aircraft such as the US, donated Cessna 208 and Diamond DA42 surveillance aircraft.

Is this a recent news? Because I have heard of Nigerian Air Force conducting sorties from Nigerien base in Diffa because of it proximity to Lake Chad.

If you ask me, I will say it isn't. You recall the meeting Buhari had with some high ranking Nigerièn? The outcome of that meeting was that NAF started using the base in Diffa to cut short the time of sorties.

The guy on twitter that is peddling this story frequently contributes to this thread.

In my response to your comment a couple weeks back, I shared this photo as evidence that Nigerian Air Force fighter jets have operated from Niger. Funny thing is, I mentioned the air port as Diffa, however there is no evidence that those Nigerian planes truly were pictured in Diffa.

Lionel4power, Bidexii and African all copied that from his twitter handle.

Let me state clearly that he, Alameen Yaqup lifted the photograph from here, and proceeded to imagine a newly established FOB for the Nigerian Air Force.

There is no Nigerian Air Force Base or Forward Operating Base in Niger. It simply does not exist.

As part of the MNJTF, Nigerian Air Assets can cross into Niger and also land in Niger or Tchad or Cameroun. However to make up a story based on a conjecture only goes to drive a narrative that Nigerians are dishonest and untrustworthy.

There are many positives we've seen particularly from the Nigerian Air Force, however it would be reprehensible to go about hunting for glory.

Like I said, we deploy our fighter jets in Niger within the framework of the MNJTF.

That's why we can operate in Chad, Niger and Cameroun, including Benin republic like the navy does.

It doesn't mean we have our own FOBs within those countries.

We do not own the infrastructure we operate from within those countries.

geez bud!!! .......yes the "9 times" was an exaggeration in the end but it still doesn't change my original assertion....

Go back and read my comments leading up to that post, you'll see: 1. That I originally never mentioned Nigeria and 2. SAs budget is twice the size of the nearest African country, which wasn't even an argument or me trying to brag but actually me criticising my own country.

I assume the nearest African country you insinuate is within SADC. Your open source info on Nigeria's federal budget still won't reflect the realities of an opaque budget. Nigeria is not South Africa. Reason corruption still thrives the way it does in Nigeria is yet again funds not accounted for in the official appropriation bill sent to the National Assembly every year by the president. An example are the security votes that are classified to which only the president is privy. State Governors too enjoy the same privilege to unaccounted for security votes within their jurisdiction. Funds for the office of the NSA to a large extent are classified and so are funds for the NIA, DSS and other clandestine operations some funded directly without any oversight.

Besides the two states have completely different budget systems when you factor in debt, politics and purchasing power parity (PPP). Having a 90 billion dollar budget does not equate a richer economy (most of the money could be borrowed anyway to fund the huge budget) compared to a country with less when exchange rate is factored in and debt to GDP ratio plus the wealth of a country is calculated by the totality of goods and services in a given year known as GDP.

While Nigeria's President Buhari maybe AWOL and the most useless we've ever had yet the dynamics inspite of him points on a macro economic level Africa's largest economy albeit slower. South Africa's national budget is ineffectual in meeting its increasing social problems albeit with a better president in Ramaphosa.
