Danielnino00:Well, they have reached the finals 6 times. That's just 2 lesser than the Eredivise teams. Galatasary is better than any middle table team in Ligue 1. |

MetalJigsaw:we really can't judge him. We don't know his reason for turning down the move. BTW Monaco are not yet unstable and with dem lille, Nice, and others strengthening their squad makes it a tough decision IMO. If he can have another excellent season at gala especially in the UCL ,better clubs will come for him |

Guys take ur time to read this epistle, though it is quite long but let us be voracious today, I say this bkus ur bele go burst before u go finish this message. Naija dun produce wicked players walahi. DOWN MEMORY LANE: Ogbueze- The onetime Nigerian football magician “Only very rare in football does a player come along who belongs not to a club or a country, but to the world, a player so talented and such a joy to watch that he inspires admiration, universality, irrespective of the chauvinistic allegiance. The crowds turn up to see his performance, and partisan feelings are forgotten. Pele of course was such a star and so was Stanley Matthews, and in his brief career, Duncan Edwards, and Diego Maradona, the gift of the gods.” – Jay-Jay Okocha … Farewell to the Last Paragon, Emma Okocha, Vanguard, Letters from Washington, on the retirement of Jay-Jay Augustine Okocha from the Super Eagles. Those of you the new generation, mesmerized by the ethane artistry of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, those of you of the old school, who saw Albert Onyeanwuna take on three or four defenders at a time, witnessed the football poetry of the London Boy, the dancing effervescence of Jay-Jay the last matador, please wait for the Daily Times story of soccer’s most pulsating decade. The Daily Times, which started covering football since June 6, 1925, had reported and seen a lot of the world’s greatest footballers. When Godwin Ogbueze performed his epic at Onikan, the Times went for the absolute and referred to the “fantasy” that happened as magic. The paper called him by that superlative for the fact that the lad conjured magic in the open arena. After earning a hat trick, Ogbueze decided on that day to knock at the World Guinness Book of Records. He took the entire football team of the Lagos Academicals, starring: Emilio John, Tunde Martins, Tony Amayo … one by one, he dribbled down the field, approaching the goalkeeper, Manuwa, Ogbueze raised his head and smiled at the goalkeeper. The onrushing goalkeeper was neatly displaced and instead of tapping in the ball to an empty net, the magician retreated, carrying the ball on his back he started the Atilogwu dance! This totally embarrassed the Lagos squad who moved back to the sidelines and Ogbueze still not tired of entertaining the now boisterous crowd, shoved the ball from his back to his shoulder, gently caressing the leather ball, interchangeably thrusting the ball to his head and to his neck in marked gentle kisses and embrace. In perfect control of his one-man theater act, Godwin Ogbueze swaggered to the centre line. The referee, who in that instance had lost his authority, went after the Magician and was about snatching the ball from Ogbueze when the Magician sold him his own dummy! His whistle fell from his hands and for the first time there was pin drop silence. Without the opponents contesting the ball, in a field of play where the referee had lost his command, Godwin Ogbueze sat on the ball and with both hands up, he beckoned on the Lagos crowd to come for the ball! That crowd would forever relate the story of that epic not only to those who missed the match but would go on forever to tell the story of Ogbueze and his magic at Onikan from generation to generation. After the civil war, Ogbueze was the unsung revelation whose artistry on that day shut down a volatile crowd, dismissed the authority of the referee, dribbled down an entire team and sat down on the ball to end a game. No other player has or will ever conjure the field like the magic of Godwin Ogbueze. (See Rangers International Football Club … History of a People, pg 19, 95) It is a pity that Magic Ogbueze was not staged before the world camera playing in the Olympics or at the World Cup. Therein springs the major difference between journalism and the mass communications world! Godwin Ogbueze, according to the Nigerian Daily Times, dribbled to stupor everybody in the field including the referee, the newspaper reported that wonder as news. Journalism! Limited by its operating technology and limited by its national circulation, the Daily Times is a localised national medium. The Onikan Stadium and its sitting terraces is not the world and that stage is incomparable to the Olympic Heights. The World Cup arenas prepared diligently for years to accommodate the intoxicating fascinations of the sporting gods. |

Top 5: Super Eagles’ most memorable matches under Gernot Rohr The German tactician has been in charge of Nigeria’s men football national team for close to three years and has led the side to the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles did not make it past the group stage of the Mundial but got to the semifinal of the continental competition, where they were stopped by eventual winners Algeria. Soccernet’s Imhons Erons runs through the games Gernot Rohr has handled for the 3-time Africa champions, picking out a few of the unforgettable games. Nigeria 3 vs 2 Cameroon: Super Eagles knock out Cameroon in AFCON thriller Nigeria ousted holders and bitter rivals Cameroon from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as they scored twice in three minutes to come from behind and win a thrilling last-16 match 3-2. Shanghai Shenhua forward Odion Ighalo gave Nigeria a 19th-minute lead but the Lions hit back with two quick fire goals before halftime. Ighalo, however, levelled the scores for Nigeria in the 63rd minute before Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi snatched the winner for the rampant Super Eagles three minutes later. Nigeria 2 vs 0 Iceland: Ahmed Musa brace leaves Super Eagles at the brink of World Cup second round qualification After losing their opening World Cup match against eventual finalists Croatia, Nigeria knew only victory would do against Iceland. And victory they got. Ahmed Musa struck both goals as Nigeria boosted their hopes of qualifying from the group stage of the World Cup with a 2-0 defeat of Iceland, a result which ultimately proved to be good news as well for Argentina. Lionel Messi’s team, after a stunning 3-0 loss to Croatia, would edge the group’s last match to dump Nigeria out of the tourney. Also Read: Nigeria 0 vs 2 South Africa: Bafana Bafana stun the Super Eagles in their own backyard On a dramatic Saturday evening, Bafana Bafana secured their maiden victory against the Super Eagles in a competitive match. Two second half goals from Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau, saw the South Africans claim a famous 2-0 away victory over Nigeria in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The two nations eventually qualified for the continental showpiece, with Nigeria rallying to top the group. The Super Eagles would later extract their pound of flesh from the South Africans after thrashing Baxter’s Bafana 2 – 1 at the quarterfinal stage of the tournament proper in Egypt. Argentina 2 vs 4 Nigeria: Super Eagles produce stunning comeback to shoot down a Messi-less side Alex Iwobi scored twice as Nigeria fought back from 2-0 down against an Argentina side missing Lionel Messi to secure a stunning 4-2 friendly victory in Krasnodar. Aguero tapped home Argentina’s second to after Ever Banega’s free-kick had given Sampaoli’s men a stunning opener. With the Nigerians two goals down and looking flat, Kelechi Iheanacho inspired a terrific fightback with a free-kick of his own in the closing stages of the first half. Two goals in the space of three second-half minutes from Iwobi and Bryan Idowu swung the game further away from Argentina. With no Messi to inspire any late heroics, Iwobi wrapped up the victory for the Super Eagles, the Arsenal forward finishing with his left foot after swerving his way beyond Javier Mascherano. Nigeria 4 vs 0 Cameroon: Attacking masterclass blows away shambolic Lions Arriving on the back of a painful 2-0 defeat in the hands of South Africa in their prior competitive fixture, Gernot Rohr’s men put up a commanding attacking display at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium to completely crush any hope Cameroon held of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Goals from Odion Ighalo, John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Kelechi Iheanacho powered the Super Eagles past the Indomitable Lions who showed promises at the beginning of the game. |

PAOK ready to sell Akpom for 7 million pounds By Tunde Liadi on August 3, 2019 Rave of the moment in Greece, Chuba Akpom has become a subject of bidding war among West Ham, Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz in the current transfer window as they seek to prize him away from PAOK Thessaloniki. Akpom won the Greek League and the cup double with PAOK last season in his debut season with the club after he joined the club permanently from Arsenal. He will be left with only a season more on his contract with PAOK at the end of the current season and even though the Greek club will like to keep him, they will not also hesitate to cash in on him. Feelers from PAOK informed that the Nigerian born player will be available for 6 million pounds. Akpom representative, Emeka Obasi told SportingLife.ng that his client will be open for a return to England or to go to Germany if a deal is struck. He also opined that Akpom will like to continue his learning curve in Greece if he is unable to move to another club until the end of the transfer window. “We are studying the proposals from West Ham United, Frankfurt and Main who have signified intention to sign our client,” Obasi told SportingLife. “He will fancy a return to the EPL and England if West Ham makes their inquiries firm with an acceptable bid before the end of the transfer window on August 8. He is also not foreclosing a move to Germany where Frankfurt and Mainz have also indicated interest. “We are going to review everything before the end of the transfer window. It is a win-win situation for both parties because he will be left with a season on his contract at the end of the season. No matter how good he is for them they know it won’t be profitable he leaves on a free transfer at the end of his contract.” Akpom scored for goals for PAOK in their last friendly game win. |
