Anyone But Jonathan, Right? by TheObservatory: 6:01am On Aug 10, 2019
Our present national predicament reminds me of the last days of Socrates, the Greek wise man. After an ignorant mob condemned him to death, for urging the people to be rational in their beliefs and in their approach to life, his triumphant detractors gloatingly asked him to plead for his life, so that they might have mercy on him. Socrates burst out laughing, instead. This was certainly not what they expected from a man staring death in the face. He did not do any of the usual things a condemned person in Athens of those days would do; like weeping, inviting relatives to weep on his behalf, or pleading outstanding family duties. No, he simply informed his surprised audience that they were spectacularly ignorant, in cheerfully assuming that the living were better off than the dead. He laughed at their presumption, pointing out that none of them really knew for sure whether they were, in fact, even doing him a favour by executing him. Of course the courtroom was quiet for a while, before renewed howling for his head resumed. But the man had made his point about the human tendency to make claims we cannot substantiate, based only on our thoughts and feelings of the moment.

Jonathan’s lousy handling of his promise to northern politicians, the international projection of him as ‘tolerating’ corruption, and his weak control of the state fuelled the quasi-consensus about the need to remove the Bayelsa-born president. But there was a misstep. Our would-be saviours moved rather hastily from the assertion (correct in my view) that Jonathan performed very badly as president, to the claim that anyone else, or even anything else for that matter, would make a better president and leader. While they correctly noted that the former president offered well-made spades to those who dug his political grave, they did not notice that the grave diggers were also digging too close to where they were standing. That they have all now caved in with the surrounding soil and pile of red earth they dug out of the ground is, therefore, not entirely surprising. They forgot that whoever does not look for the toots of a problem, but seeks to find progress and improvement in constant change “stands on the precarious ground of an adventurer.”

The Nigerian state is where it is today because many “prominent” Nigerians have consistently shown a cheerful disregard for the fallibility of human opinion and the finitude of their own knowledge and certainties. While propagating and projecting the “anything but Jonathan” mantra, many did not envisage our reality of today. Are they all happy now? Are they faring well? Do we have a better president, a better, stronger and more united nation? Do we stand our full height, and are more respected, in the comity of nations today? Are we more secure and better structured to withstand the vagaries of a 21st Century world? I think not!

A church just celebrated the release of five pastors kidnapped last week. Catholic priests ingloriously protested in Enugu over insecurity. So-called socio-cultural organisations are still making empty threats. But because too many would-be saviours are complicit in what we are facing today, there are really no messiahs out there. Watch out for the bad stretch ahead, as we face the fruits of presumption.

Hmm! GEJ lost the chance for reelection to his penchant for tolerance for stealing as against corruption and vice versa.

What could have warranted his response on NationalTV that "stealing is not corruption". His inpatient Patience also demarketed and morally derobed him.
Re: Anyone But Jonathan, Right? by alphaNomega: 7:12am On Aug 10, 2019
GEJ's administration was terrible, so bad that even Buhari with a track record of economic failures was the chosen option.

I am always up for fresh blood, what I mean is someone new, someone who has not been President before to take the number one position in this country.

I saw Obasanjo's government as a one time mistake having had him as a military head of state, then we had Ya'ardua, then GEJ, then I though we were making progress only to send ourselves back to 1983!!!

In the early weeks of this year, able bodied Nigerian men, women and children supposedly "in their right minds" were clamouring for Atiku to be the next head of state.

I mean this same Atiku that a person who worked closely with him in Aso rock wrote a book and revealed a lot of shady information.

James Ibori was convicted twice for theft in the UK only to return to Nigeria and become a serving governor. Atiku with numerous corruption cases to his name stemming from his previous days as VP already has a huge following for him to be the next President. Then you wonder why the international community will take us serious.

Our Federal universities are easily blacklisted by international accreditation bodies like WES. Presenting a Nigerian passport in China and some European nations automatically qualifies you for extra background checks.

I do not know how you guys may see it, but in 2015 GEJ was not the right option, neither was Buhari. A lot of fear mongering was in play at the time, let's not forget that people even said Nigeria would break up if the status quo remained. I hope we are all enjoying the one Nigeria.

On GEJ's infamous quote "stealing is not corruption" it is left for you to decide. You do not have to steal to be corrupt. Stealing makes you a thief and there is punishment for that.

He lost because he lost! Stealing is not corruption both legal and in lexicon. Or synonym for stealing is corruption?

Lol. I see spirited resurgence to push the clueless kleptomaniac Goodluck Jonathan into the public consciousness of Nigerians, probably ahead of the 2023 elections.

Kolewerk o.

I believe a government will come one day that did not sign any agreement with Jonathan and it will release all the evil looting that Jonathan and his band of thieves carried out while in power.

The worse president Nigeria ever witnessed is Babangida, that is the dark cloud hovering over Nigeria till tomorrow.

The second is Ebele Jonathan cos from enjoying nation wide support he squandered it to have only support of the hating tribe of Nigeria which caused him dearly. Under Ebele, endemic looting was a govt policy to the extent he declared on national TV that looting of public fund is not corruption.

Boko destroyed United Nation office in Abuja, Nyanya bombing crippled Abuja n Igbos were tripping out of Abuja that is now secured by Buhari in droves like Israelites crossing the Red Sea from the fear of Pharaoh’s chariots. Instead of thanking Buhari they are wailing herdsmen are moving cattles in the Capital, one would think they prefer Boko Haram bombings in Abuja with their senseless wail of daily sorrow.

Bombing from Kano Kaduna Kwara Sokoto Yobe Borno Adamawa Zamfara Kebbi Taraba were eeekly n persistent occurrence with endless fear Boko Haram was soon to penetrate to the south. Do all this Igbos not remember the stop n search on the Mokwa - Jebba bridge barricade ?! All which disappeared under Buhari Igbos love to hate.

Oduagate car scandal, Allison private jet scandal, Bart Nnaji emery privatization fraud, Abba Moro immigrantion death scandal, Sanusigate, subsidy fraud n scandal. Banditry, herdsmen, kidnapping, bunkering, piracy, militancy name it. Ebele Jonathan adapted any evil as FG policy to ruin Nigeria from the bottom up n up to buttom again.

May it never be well with him n his entire household, till date trillion is still be retrieved from Patience Jonathan Ebele Allison n co.

The third worse is Abacha May his souls never rest even in hell.

Do yourself a favour and shut da fuc/k up! You Buhari/APC minions are so disgusting! You must think you're talking to kids here!

Everyone (including you hypocrites) can see the socio-economic fortunes and security in the country have nose-dived when compared to how things were in prior to the coming of your god in 2015! Your 'saint' has now done more than four years in office (and Nigerians have the emotional and physical scars to prove it), so one would expect corruption in Nigeria would have now been reduced to its barest minimum, and all civil and public servants would now be adhering to the finest principles of public service and moral conduct! Is this the case presently?

Your anti-corruption god has been president now for more than four years, so one would expect you lot would have recovered a considerable amount of billions of dollars you claim -with conviction- were stolen under the GEJ admin'! With these extra billions of dollars pumped into the economy plus the loopholes used for stealing of public funds now plugged, one would now expect your god and his party would have the funds to take the country to El-Dorado! Are we there yet?

And don't get me started on all the people with questionable character your 'saint' has surrounded himself with in governance....not forgetting those ones he's given a pass and declared blameless by virtue of them being in APC or supporting his rat infested government!

From some the comments above,it's very obvious that some souls are irredeemable.
Gej lost because the north felt short changed after the death of yaradua and wanted power back at all costs while the yorubas felt marginalized.
there was this desperation to grab power by all means by this two groups.
the only thing that could have kept GEJ in power is that if he was brutal which he is not.
all the story about corruption and that he is clueless are all propaganda especially when that administration is placed side by side with this present one.

. For you to have said Buhari secured Abuja that just shows how you are hypocritical with your viwes, if all the military bases in the north are not secured under your former general then,do you think Abuja is more secured than any of the military battlion in the country? Now military battalions have turned soft target for bandits and boko haram maybe, you think the united nation building is more secured than the military battalion in Biu? Then on corruption, a former general who can not secure your boarders will have the intelligence and intellectual strenght to withstand the biro robbery? You must be joking. Do you still remember were our 1billion dollars withdrawn from ECA to fight the war against boko haram whereas the COAS said he had never receive a dine of the said money? So if you talk about worst president in Nigeria, we have never had a foolish and so stupid president in Nigeria, not even Abacha.

These unrepentant looters that cannot even accomplish a decent way of life in their backyards are not ashamed to be pushing Jonathan to the forefront.

Only God knows who cursed some Nigerians Small country like Ghana has produced better leaders than us. We hate to hear that but if Ghana had half of our resources, brain power and arable land, Africa could have been a different Continent.

We are always clamouring for the least of two evils based on our parochial instincts, not for the best leader.
