Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri won the 2019 edition of the Nigeria Open Table Tennis Championship held in Lagos on Sunday.

Quadri, who won the competition back-to-back, said he overcame injury in the Round of 16 to emerge victorious.

He said this after defeating Austria’s Gardos Robert in a thrilling six contested sets, 15-13, 11-3, 8-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-1 (4-2).

Quadri is the second player to defend the title after Omar Assar of Egypt. He won the last edition of the tournament, which is in its sixth year.

By retaining the men’s Singles Nigeria Open title, Quadri won prize money of $7,000, while Gardos got $3,500.

Speaking on how he almost got eliminated, Quadri said, “I had an injury in the Round of 16, but I still had to keep playing. I really want to commend the medical team because they really did well. I kept playing because I am a fighter; it’s not over until it is over.”

He, however, commended his supporters, saying, “They have always supported me, they have always believed in me. I don’t know why. Only God can reward them more than I can.”

Meanwhile, Russia’s Mikhailova Polina claimed the women’s singles by defeating compatriot Noskova Yana 4-3 in the final.

Congrats bro!

This is the only sport Nigeria wins consistently, unfortunately it doesn't have huge fans. For over ten years running Nigeria dominated Africa in Table Tennis.

This is what passion begets. He has got passion for his game and plays well irrespective of the lack lustre support he gets from most Nigerians. Guyman dey make cool bucks enjoying what he loves doing and is recognised in the game all over the world. What else can one ask for in a work? Table tennis is bae.

If you know, u know, those days I dey kantab my table tennis opponents. Lolz

We spend millions yearly on soccer tournaments, what's there to show for all that?

Every where you go in Nigeria, soccer is played, supported, watched, but it brings us NOTHING!

Ministry of Education be demanding soccer field as criteria for school approval!
Please, is soccer not a more dangerous game than many others? Why soccer?

Why not sqash, lawn tennis, table tennis, gym, handball space?

Soccer is a game students cannot play in the rain, and in hot sun!

We should donate tennis tables to schools, volleyball nets, basketball rims, gym mats, etc too would be great!

Let's encourage what we are good at.

We can produce world snooker champions too!

You will never hear noise from an Hausa man or a Yoruba man online but if it were to be an Igbo man, you would hear:

Igbo race is the best in the world, we control everything in Nigeria from sport to technology. We are just unfortunate to be in this country we would have grown beyond this. Indeed Igbo man is blessed with numerous talents and no tribe can ever beat or achieve that in Nigeria. An igbo man can survive anywhere in the world because we are naturally ahead. Give us biafra and see how we will turn it to Dubai withing few years. Igbo amaka.

I am not hating on them but these their altitudes of cheast beating and braging about being the best tribe without having anything to show off will probably make you naturally dislike them.

I'm igbo nonetheless, but I kind of agree with you. Our sense of pride atimes is uncalled for. We seem to display annoying comfort that sounds irritating but just learn to ignore them, it's still the ' hangover' physique of the civil war
