Don't sign that contract!

Many contractors are only concern about the bills of quantities out of all contract documents. Many pay little or no attention to contract conditions. This has lead to project abandonment, disputes and conflicts in project execution and contract administration.

A contract should not be signed without thorough understanding of the terms of contract in the contract conditions.

Your signature to that contract is your consent, acceptance and agreement to all terms in the conditions of contract including all potential 'opportunities' and 'liabilities'

2. Administration of advance Payments, retention and performance bond
3. Preparation of interim valuation
4. Valuation of variation/fluctuations
5. Preparation of financial statement
6. Application of cost control including comparative cost analysis evaluation
7. Remeasurement of provisional quantities and provisional sum items
8. Preparation and agreement of final account
9. Preparation or vetting of loss, expenses or insurance claim
10. computation and vetting of fees
11. Preparation of cash flow forecast
12. Production and cost control
13. Resource determination, scheduling and purchasing

It is of great concern to me that several Nigerians don't know about Quantity Surveying as a profession in the built environment , even some of the educated ones.

Some that know about the profession see preparation of Bills of Quantities as the only responsibility of a Quantity Surveyorsurveyor

Kudos to NIQS for the great effort over the years to increase the awareness of the profession. However, we need to do more.
