You are very ignorant of tax laws in Nigeria. Incomes generated by a church from commercial activities are taxable. This is my profession so stop telling me nonsense.

Please with all due respect mention any Church that pays tax from commercial activities and I will tender unreserve apology to everyone on Nairaland.

If a church has a school,an event center,a microfinance bank,a water bottling company then it's expected to pay tax

Every church is God's property and you must be careful about how you approach them before you draw the wrath of GOD.

Which income did they generate from books or your just yammering along because you can type rubbish?

God's advocate go read your bible well Jesus the head of the church paid tithe and admonished his followers to pay tax.

Religion sentiment is one of the reasons Nigeria is still struggling with development after years of Independent, i am a Christian I advocate that churches, mosque, pastors and imam should be made to pay tax in Nigeria

Y'all get emotional over nothing... How does asking simple yet pertinent questions equal glorifying Satan?... If Christ were present today, I doubt he would have taken offense as you seem to have.

In your haste to be unnecessarily defensive, you dabbled into fallacy (maybe ignorance)... A lot of churches in Nigeria, and across the globe, are tenants in the structures they use for worship... Some that own them equally lease them out for good fees, some have schools that generate very good income and profits... I know one or 2 involved in hospitality and other profit yielding ventures...

Please, do some research on this subject... I have absolutely nothing against the church. I'm just practical and realistic. Thank you.

Are you very sure assemblies does all you said above or you just want to glorify the devil?

His followers should pay tax like every other Nigerian, show me where Jesus told his church to tax or I will know you are just promoting Satan.

Sigh... I didn't even mention Assemblies. I was talking about churches in general... But, since you have chosen to be specific, find out who owns "Evangel Secondary school" in certain parts of the country especially the East, and if the tuition is free.... And yes, some branches of the church pay rent, own properties and lease them for fees.

RCCG and Living faith are good examples. They pay taxes on all their commercial activities. RCCG also deduct and remit personal income taxes (PAYE) from the salaries of their full time pastors.

Assemblies of God church is not God and asking the church to obey the law does not amount to fighting God. So, don’t mix the two together.

Church are exempted from paying taxes from income generated from tithes and offerings majorly. However, if they generate other incomes from commercial activities such as sales of books and other items, operation of schools etc, they are duty bound to pay taxes on such incomes. Salaries paid to pastors and other workers in the church are also taxable. The church should go and pay up its taxes instead of throwing tantrums around.

Back to "glorifying the devil" insinuations, are we?...

Please, bring forth more intelligent and practical refutations, or give it rest...

In the event that you have lost track of the thread of discussion, let me rephrase the sum of my questions: What is the basis for non taxation of places of worship in Nigeria, when a lot of countries do?...

P.S... Take a deep breath, calm those sensitive nerves, and bring forth salient points... When Christ was queried about the tax evasion of his disciples, he didn't allude to the devil... Be like Christ. Thank you.

As long as the church generate incomes via sales, it is liable to pay tax.

As long as the church has staff that earn salaries, they are liable to remit paye deducted from the salary of each staff.

You must be a very ignorant person or an extremely mischievous human being.

You went from church operating schools down to personal income tax.

Schools do not pay tax in Nigeria and personal income tax (PAYE) of any employee is paid to the state's internal revenue service. PAYE is not collected by the FIRS.

You should stop your mischief. It is not everything you can make yourself available to defend. Even if it is your duty to spin all things on behalf of government, try and get the correct background and details to avoid doing severe damage to your reputation.

Don't let him confuse you. He barely understands what he is saying. Either that, or he is paid to spin government policies every time here.

Schools in Nigeria are registered as limited by guarantee. They are not limited liability companies (they are not limited by shares). They don't pay tax to FIRS. They only pay levies to states where they operate. Similarly, PAYE is not collected by the FIRS. Personal income tax of employees goes to state internal revenue service, where the business is located.

Churches are registered as not for profit organizations. Most of the activities of the church are charities.

It is only the FIRS that can make clarifications on these very unusual inclusion of this church.

I wanted you to clarify the point you’re trying to make before I respond.

My contributions on this thread is very clear. Commercial activities carried out by churches are liable to income taxes. If Assemblies of God church have engaged in commercial activities, the income generated should be subjected to tax.

At no point did I say FIRS is responsible for collecting PAYE. I only buttressed my point by saying even the salaries of pastors and other church workers are subjected to personal income tax.

Your argument that schools don’t pay income taxes is also laughable. If the school was registered to make profit, they are liable to income tax. Schools are only exempted from income tax if they are registered as non profit making and incomes generated are for charitable purposes.

So, I ask again, what exactly is your point?

Very correct Sir, PAYE goes to State not FIRS. Church is non profit organisation and does not pay tax.
