Confuse Man, why not close the Northern borders, Nigeria is not sufficient in rice production. [ bquote author=doris00 post=81698171]President Muhammadu Buhari has attributed the partial closure of Nigeria’s border with Benin Republic to the massive smuggling activities especially of rice, taking place on that corridor.

The Nigerian leader gave the reason during an audience granted his Beninois counterpart, Patrice Talon, on the margins of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD7), in Yokohama, Japan on Wednesday.

Buhari, who expressed great concern over the smuggling of rice, said it threatened the self-sufficiency already attained due to his administration’s agricultural policies.

According to him, “Now that our people in the rural areas are going back to their farms, and the country has saved huge sums of money which would otherwise have been expended on importing rice using our scarce foreign reserves, we cannot allow smuggling of the product at such alarming proportions to continue.”

The Nigerian President said the limited closure of the country’s western border was to allow Nigeria’s security forces to develop a strategy on how to stem the dangerous trend and its wider ramifications.

Responding to the concerns raised by President Talon on the magnitude of suffering caused by the closure, Buhari said he had taken note and would reconsider reopening it in the not too distant future.

He, however, disclosed that a meeting with his counterparts from Benin and Niger Republics would soon be called to determine strict and comprehensive measures to curtail the level of smuggling across their borders.

Earlier, President Talon had said he called on the Nigerian President as a result of the severe impact which the closure of the Nigerian border was having on his people.

Buhari also received in audience, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa during which issues of common bilateral relations especially the killings of Nigerians in South Africa, were discussed. The matter will be further examined during the Nigerian leader’s official visit to Pretoria in October 2019.

Do you also realise the closure means we cannot export to West Africa?

Was it by closing d border that sim card dropped from 35k to 200naira? Is it only rice that passes thru d border? What is d work of NCS that an entire international border has to b closed?

Different strokes for different regions. I wonder who advises Buhari. The highest smuggling of Rice occurs up north, those that knows know. I am in no way supporting smuggling, but if the border with Benin is closed then they also need to close the porous borders up north where most of the smuggling occurs. When this is not the case, it becomes obvious that there is an agenda.

The country has never been self sufficient in rice production. Over a million tons of rice is smuggled from Benin Republic into the country yearly.

Why this quest to become self reliant in rice production? Nigeria has never had a problem with rice production. The problem it has is the ability to produce it at a competitive price as the country lacks comparative advantage in it.

Let's take a deep look at it. A Beninoise boy told me a bag of rice in Benin is 12,000 when it's 18,000 here.

For the government to compel Nigerians to produce rice, it puts up a protectionist wall that makes the imported rice cost as much as 18,000 or more. Now that the imported version is dearer than the local version, local demand for locally made rice increases and that encourages production.

My argument has always been how can paying 18,000 for a product that should 12,000 help the poor ? What's the being self sufficient in expensive rice help the indigent?

Don't forget that the people farming are not necessarily the rich.
Besides, Nigeria can produce rice to the point where price would drop.
But the price has to be competitive first to attract significant players before it drops due to excess production.

It is just like petrol.

Nigeria has no comparative advantage in rice production. Only 3 countries have this advantage and they are Thailand, Vietnam and India as they have the large amounts of the best land suited for rice production.

All other countries to some degree should import some of their stuff.

It is not about increasing production until the price will drop. That has been the argument about other prodcts the country banned.

The country should focus on what it has comparative advantage in. Shea butter has been reckoned to have the ability to earn the country as much as $2bn yearly. The forex from there alone will take care of rice imports. There's cashew, cocoa and many other products that Nigeria excels in. I'm sure if kolanuts were well exploited, it can yield as much as $2bn yearly as well

Country's do best when they focus on things they have comparative advantage in. Pouring resources into areas you suck at does very little for you.

Some of those guys are thick-skin hypocrites. They sound as though they care about Nigeria, but deep within their allegiance is only to one man, Buhari, and not to the country Nigeria. So even when he makes stupid policies they still find a way to support him. One of the biggest routes for rice smuggling is Nigeria-Niger border but as usual baba acts like it doesn't exist.

U haven't been able to counter anything I have said with proper argument. Ur copious use of foul language still takes u far far away from any meaningful argument. No wonder u aren't able to sell ur rice.

Ist, d VP before d presidential elections claimed that rice imports have dropped because Nigeria now self sufficient in rice production as we now produce over 90% of our rice locally.By closing d border because of rice, clearly shows that d VP lied about d state of rice production.

Second, if d border is being closed because of rice, it means that Nigerians have been importing (not smuggling) rice, a banned product, thru d border in d last 4years. D question is, how was rice passing thru d border with NCS manning d border? Also, d implication of closing d border is that Nigeria can't export anything 2d west African coast by land except u think d border is only meant for rice. Penny wise, pound foolish.

Third, u talk about forex from CBN. Is CBN d only source of forex in Nigeria?

Lastly, what is d volume of local rice production in relation to local demand that makes u think that once d border is closed, then local rice will b available for every Nigerian?

Pls read this intellectual post below from a like mind:
