Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, accompanied by Imperial family members, hosted a tea party for leaders attending the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) at the Imperial Palace.

The Emperor and Empress were also present at the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize award ceremony.

In 2006, the Japanese government established the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize to publicly honor individuals and groups with prominent achievements in the areas of medical research and medical services to combat infectious and other diseases in Africa. 

Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, for whom the prize is named, is a bacteriologist who is well known to Japanese people because his portrait is on the 1,000 yen note.

Dr. Noguchi was born in 1876 to a poor farmer in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, studied very hard, became a doctor, and went to the United States in 1900. He achieved many breakthroughs in the study of syphilis and yellow fever at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, and was nominated several times for the Nobel Prize. But Noguchi died of yellow fever in 1928 at Accra in the British-colonized Gold Coast (currently Ghana) in West Africa, where he had moved to research the disease.

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), located in the Republic of Ghana, is named after him.

The winners of this year's prize are Dr Francis Gervase Omaswa from Uganda & Dr Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum of DRC.

The Japanese culture has been tainted. Why is the emperor not wearing the Sokutai? For a country that has maintained its cultural integrity for decades and even teach its students using the L1, it is strange that its primary symbol of culture is seen in suit instead of the complex Sokutai.

While you are busy typing this, the Japanese people who own the culture are not complaining and they give so much reverence to that emperor and worship him like a deity even though he wears a suit.
