Extensive damage and destruction in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian is seen in an area called 'The Mud' at Marsh Harbour in Great Abaco Island, Bahamas on Thursday.

Half of the homes in the Bahamas were destroyed or severely damaged, racking up a total of $7billion in insured and uninsured property losses.

Earlier this week, Dorian pummeled parts of the Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane, leaving widespread devastation at least 30 people dead. The full scope of the disaster is still unknown.

"The West" is a relative and man made terminology which covers a larger proportion of the planet than is affected by hurricanes.

The hurricane belt only runs through a portion of the Caribbean Islands into the west coast of North America. It is purely a geographical matter rather than demographic.
