Plan To Evacuate Nigerians From South Africa Suffers Setback Due To Expired Passport

The plan by Air Peace to evacuate Nigerians in South Africa from September 6 suffered a setback as the majority of those interested in the process have expired passports.

Mr Allen Onyema, the Chairman of Air Peace, said in a statement in Lagos on Friday that most of the potential returnees were yet to renew their documents.

Onyema said the airline had already placed its Boeing 777 aircraft on standby and was only awaiting the go-ahead from the government.

“The Air Peace flight to South Africa will take off from the Lagos Airport and also return to Lagos. As earlier stated, the take off could be SepT 9 or 10.

I honestly think this reason is lame, except there’s something they’re not telling us. The people to be evacuated are Nigerians with a Nigerian airline. I don’t get how an expired passport will stop them from flying. The view of the immigration officer on arrival is that you are coming home and as such all you need to do is prove citizenship, which an expired passport does.

Its not the governments job to renew your passport.

Lack of personal responsibility and self entitlement is one of the greatest barriers to progress in Nigeria and the black race generally.

Same problem in South Africa where the shameless citizens rather than work hard, laze and drink around all day and get angry with hard working foreigners (both legal and illegal hard work)

Even if it isn't expired passports, nobody wants to cone down to Nigeria, when South Africa isn't Libya. They all traveled to South Africa because of a better life but us Nigeria better than what they left her?

These is just the bigger issue how will you be in a foreign land and you fail to renew your passport and still feel so comfortable operating with an expired passport , anything that happens the government can't b blamed on it

South Africans are planning another attack from 9th September and it will be massive, the news are being sent out by South Africa women. The attack of 2nd September started like this, we got the news and we didn’t take it seriously please if there is anyway the government can allow it citizens return home with or without passport they should do.

No country will give you a visa or renew your visa on an expired passport. This simply means they must have gotten a visa that correspond to the life span or validity of their passport. (Meaning you cant applied to get a one year visa or visa renewal on a 6 months passport validity). So they must have gotten their valid visa on a valid passport. And if you know your passport will be expiring soon, why not go to your embassy and renew it or fly back home to do it?
So the point here is, if they've renewed their passport, they wont be having expired passport issue. And as far as you are having an expired passport, it simply means you cant get a valid visa on such an expired passport. And thats not an excuse. Because for you to stay in another man's country, you definitely need a valid visa. staying in another man's country without visa due to an expired passport is no body's fault but yours. So in all, an expired passport means no valid visa. And staying without valid visa is a crime.

You’re wrong sir. Let’s take US as a case study. The standard Visa issued by US is 24 months which is 2 years. You must have at least 6 months Validity to be able to apply for a US Visa. What it means is that you can have a valid Visa on an expired passport, all you need do is get a new passport and bind both together. While Canada gives you Visa based on the Validity of your passport. So Visa doesn’t necessarily correspond to the validity of passport. Secondly, staying without a valid visa isn’t a crime. You guys fail to understand the meaning of Visa. Visa doesn’t guarantee you an entry into a country, it only ushers you to a point of entry to request permission from an Immigration officer to enter the country. Now, you can have a visa that will expire in 2 weeks and travel to US, if the CBP officers stamps 6 months on your passport, you’re permitted to stay in the Us for 6 months not minding the expiration of your visa in 2 weeks time. Finally, let’s go back to our topic at hand. A country that said all illegal immigrants should vacate their country, isn’t it unwise to start checking the validity of passport?

My passport expired while I was in Canada and I still flew from Ontario to Lagos with a Dubai stop over.

An expired passport does not stop you from returning to your home country. Air peace should come out with the truth.

It’s either people are not showing interest or they have not been able to get anyone (the government) to cover the cost.

Try renewal of passport abroad. You will see big men begging those embassy staff, answering them madams and ogas, all to get their passports renewed. Even at that, they delay and drag it for weeks to months. Nothing frustrates like that, especially when one has a set out plan/need for the passport.
The question is why does it take months to produce a passport?

You are absolutely right on point. In case of emergency, the passports should not be deterrent from rescuing Nigerians from that hell hole called South Africa. When people are dying, the first thing is for their govt to do everything possible to evacuate them. The number 1 job of a leader is to protect his or her people.
