Where caning is allowed:

Males students are generally beaten on their buttocks and females students on the palms of their hands.

These are the laid down rules although there could be some exceptions like:beating of back,feet,legs

Let me start by saying it depends on the school you attended.

The case is different if it is a public or private school.
Right from my junior class, anywhere is allowed..

The school I attenede was as if the teachers have Masters and PhD in flogging..
I can remember vividly when I was in JSS1, when a teacher gave me 'tospi' on my head it got swollen..
I had another teacher we call foka(break the finger), this one targets the tip of your finger. And forget, you won't write for the rest of the day.
There is another one we call lefty, this one will tell you to touch your toes and the cane you in between you back, all aimed at your spinal cord( this teacher no get joy).
Coming down to my senior class, my Yoruba teacher will chase you and give you the beating of your life..

All the above have no gender preference, and it is a public school..

I remenber when they used to beat our hands as girls in those days
after each stroke,we would shake our hands and then present our hands again for futher caning.
sometimes the caning was on our back

sometimes they will beat our hands and the white of our palms would become red.

Girls would just be crying

i attended a mixed school
i dont remember boys being beaten.They were so stubborn that they will jump fence to avoid caning
i know in the boys hostels,they were beaten seriously
but i did not see any formal caning of the senior boys except the new intakes in jss

Why flog when you can give the child punishment such as cutting grass, cleaning or writing 1 to 10,000 on a brand new notebook?

Anyway, when I was in school, flogging was mostly on the hand. You get flogged on your butt if your offense is especially serious. I don't remember females being flogged on their butt though.

I feel flogging should be scrapped as there are more effective ways to discipline a child in a way that he or she will never forget.

Back in secondary school, even when we all had to lie down in the school compound for general strokes, teachers would aim to flog the girls on the cape of their uniform's. And that cape around the shoulder was thick.

However, our trousers were first stretched as boys till both the underwear becomes a single layer with it. Then bam! They could go as far as asking you to remove excess underwear.

One teacher will even press your ass to know if you're stiffening up. Lol

There was also this fact or myth that if you happen to get a piece of the cane and throw it into an anthill, the teacher’s hand would get swollen for days.
Some bad boys then as a way of getting back at the teachers tried it and if I could remember, it actually worked

hmm...i believe it depends on the school. Back then in primary school both boys n girls where flogged anywhere.
but in sec school (boys only) we were flogged mostly on the back and butt. very painful. Sometimes they'll ask ur mates to suspend u via ur hand and leg so u can't rub anywhere.
just chest ur 6 to 8 strokes of the cane and bounce back to ur seat...

Girls do get flogged on the bottom. Infact, its safer to flog on the bottom than the hands. Your hands are needed for almost all dextrous activities. You cant do anything without your hands. The muscle on your buttock on the other hand are very strong and protective. To cause any damage on them will require more force than flogging can produce.
If girls were flogged on the hands, they simply want to damage their hands to set women back some more.

Coporal punishment in most schools is a violation of the child's right.
I don't think the difference makes any difference.

There was no difference in my secondary school days as I can remember being flogged everywhere - back, buttocks, behind legs and palms. We also did clearing of grass too.


The only time I saw a difference was during my few days as a teacher. I noticed male teachers avoided flogging girls on their buttocks, but the female teachers did. They "claimed" some male teachers feel the butt with their canes before flogging. That wasn't a problem in my days. Things are changing...

While flogging may seem advantageous because the average African child is stubborn, but on the other hand, it is a means for teachers to vent their angers and frustrations.

Teachers who went to the university studying medicine, engineering, etc hoping to become doctors, engineers etc, but have been greeted by the reality that in life you don't always get what you want and have resorted to teaching in secondary schools. These same teachers would end up unleashing the feelings of failure in them on the children they are supposed to guide.

I guess teachers love flogging he boys 25 because they were refused to be payed the common 25k they asked and they flog the girls 15 because they actually earn 15k.

While in command, boys receive cane on the buttocks or lap(which is extremely painful), girls receive on the hand.
A teacher can flog on the back(which is very painful), for both genders, or on the leg(which is very painful).
Teachers hardly even flog on the buttocks because they know we boys were used to it so it was either on the waist, lap or back and it used to enter bloodstream if you are flogged there.

Citing an example,
Amaka was a beautiful girl but extremely stubborn. Every teacher in her school knew of this and always flogged her on her palms but one day, Mr Akindeju flogged her severally on her butt and while she was wriggling around in pain, Mr Akindeju saw bloodstains on her skirt. He became scared and began to plead with her but unknowingly to him, he didn't inflict any injury on her. Her sanitary pad shifted causing the bloodstains.

I attended an all girls school and we were flogged on any part of our bodies, it all depends on the teacher, my geography teacher Mr C square usually flogs on the bum and he takes great delight in doing so, I will never forget the Cain one agriculture teacher gave me on my back cos I just called him Mr Piyaru never knew it was a nick name the students called him it was after then I found out it was the name of a masquerade, and Mr Taylor my math teacher I still believe the five strokes of cane on my back was unfair, I only wanted to call my friends that maths Lesson had started, oh how I cried that day.
