Space rocks are one of humanity’s major existential threats, and while the likes of NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are constantly monitoring the skies for near-Earth objects (NEO) the danger will always remain. NASA has said that it has discovered, and was monitoring, 8,000 near-Earth asteroids which are at least 140 metres wide – which would be big enough to wipe out a small country. But the space agency believes there may be 25,000 of these within Earth’s ‘district’.

This means that more than two-thirds are yet to be found, and experts believe it is only a matter of time before an asteroid comes crashing into Earth.

Greg Leonard, a senior research specialist at the Catalina Sky Survey – a NASA funded project supported by the Near Earth Object Observation Program (NEOO) under the Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) – says there is a “100 percent” chance an asteroid will hit Earth.

Mr Leonard spoke to journalist Bryan Walsh for the latter’s new book End Times, which looks at the existential threats which humanity faces: “I know that the chances of me dying in an asteroid impact is less than dying from a lightning strike.

“But I also know that if we do nothing, sooner or later, there’s a one hundred percent chance that one will get us.

“So I feel privileged to be doing something.”

However, Mr Walsh went on to say that “intelligence-gathering alone won’t keep Earth safe.”

Mr Walsh continued: “As Leonard said, given enough time, a large Near Earth Object will end up on a collision course with our planet.

“It’s happened before and it will happen again.”

While the chances of a major asteroid hitting Earth are small – NASA believes there is a one in 300,000 chance every year that a space rock which could cause regional damage will hit – the devastating prospect is not impossible.

Greg Leonard, a senior researcher at the NASA financed Catalina Sky Survey (CSS), put the probability at “one hundred percent” unless changes are made. He was speaking to science writer Bryan Walsh for his new book, ‘End Times: A Brief Guide to the End of the World’.

Mr Leonard is also a professor at New Zealand’s University of Otago, where he forms part of the school of surveying.

However he did also admit that the chances of being killed by an asteroid are currently lower than dying after an asteroid strike.

According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory each year an asteroid roughly the size of a car entered the Earth’s atmosphere, but usually burn up without causing damage.

However the impact of a much larger rock could be catastrophic for the human species if it hits Earth, fundamentally changing the planets environment.

Referring to asteroids Mr Leonard commented: “I also know that if we do nothing, sooner or later, there’s a one hundred percent chance that one will get us.

“So I feel privileged to be doing something.”

A giant asteroid strike, likely by a rock a few kilometres across, is believed to have been responsible for the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.

This took place 66 million years ago wiping out around three quarters of animal species on Earth, including the dinosaurs.

Mr Leonard’s comments came after NASA admitted it only spotted a potentially dangerous asteroid hurtling towards Earth just hours before it entered Earth’s atmosphere.

The asteroid, 2019 MO, burned up in the atmosphere above the Caribbean on June 29.

It was identified by NASA around 300,000 miles from Earth.

This is further away from our planet than the Moon.

In a statement NASA claimed this was “roughly the equivalent of spotting something the size of a gnat from a distance of 310 miles”.

The asteroid was detected by the ATLAS survey telescope situated at the University of Hawaii.

Data was passed to the NASA financed Minor Planet Centre, who calculated the asteroid was on a collision course with Earth.

Davide Farnocchia, a scientist at NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies, commented: “Asteroids this size are far smaller than what we're tasked to track.

“They're so small, they would not survive passing through our atmosphere to cause damage to Earth's surface.

“But this event shows how capable our search programs are, even for objects of such small sizes.”

No casualties or damage were reported when 2019 MO burned up over the Caribbean.

NASA tends to focus its attention on larger asteroids, which are easier to detect and potentially more dangerous.

While it’s widely accepted that an asteroid killed Earth’s dinosaurs, how exactly it achieved this has remained the subject of debate. Now, researchers have discovered the apocalypse was even more awe-inspiring than we’d thought.

The asteroid, measuring an estimated 81 kilometers (50 miles) across, smashed into the Earth near Chicxulub, in what is now modern Mexico, with the force 10 billion WWII nuclear bombs, killing 75 percent of all life on Earth. The initial blast ignited forests and grasslands for thousands of kilometers.
The impact then generated a tsunami several hundred meters high which reached as far as modern day Illinois in the US. Now, scientists at the University of Texas at Austin examining core samples from the impact site, from 500 to 1,300 meters (1,640 to 4,265 feet) below the seafloor, have found hard evidence of the exact modus operandi of the planet-killer asteroid.

In research published Monday, the team studying the impact crater off the Gulf of Mexico found charcoal and soil that were blasted thousands of miles away and then sucked back inwards by the far-reaching tsunami that swept across the Americas. A staggering amount of material was deposited back into the crater that same day, preserving the conditions of the blast site from the first minutes and hours of the impact.
Most curiously, however, no sulfur was found in the crater, meaning an estimated 325 billion tons of the element were launched into the atmosphere, destroying Earth's climate in the process and blocking out the sun for a prolonged period. This caused an unprecedented cooling event which, in turn, led to the extinction of the (non-avian) dinosaurs. To put that into perspective, that is four orders of magnitude greater than the sulfur output of the 1883 Krakatoa eruption which cooled the planet for five years.

“The real killer has got to be atmospheric,” said Sean Gulick, a University of Texas Institute for Geophysics research professor at the Jackson School of Geosciences. “The only way you get a global mass extinction like this is an atmospheric effect.”

Sixty-six million years ago, life on our planet was going on just as it had on any other day – enormous reptiles dominated the landscape. Herbivorous behemoths up to 40 metres long co-mingled with bi-pedal carnivorous titans, seas teemed with fanged leviathans and the skies were navigated by leathery-winged creatures larger than any birds in history.

But in moments, after 180 million years of prosperity, this extraordinary abundance of life was all but obliterated.

The asteroid which wiped out the dinosaurs hit the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico with the power of 10 billion atomic bombs of the size used in the Second World War.

The impact set alight vast wildfires stretching thousands of miles, triggered towering tsunamis and blasted so much sulphur into the atmosphere it blocked the sun, causing the catastrophic global cooling that ultimately doomed the dinosaurs.

This cataclysmic scenario is what scientists have largely hypothesised ended the reign of the fearsome creatures.

Now, a new study led by the University of Texas at Austin has confirmed the theory by finding hard evidence in the hundreds of feet of rocks that filled the impact crater within the first 24 hours after impact.

Core samples taken at the crater also contain charcoal and jumbles of rock brought in by the tsunami’s backflow. However, sulphur is conspicuously absent. They are all part of a rock record that offers the most detailed look yet into the aftermath of the catastrophe which wiped out 75 per cent of life on Earth.

Sean Gulick, a research professor at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (UTIG), who worked with an international team of more than two dozen scientists, said the research “tells us about impact processes from an eyewitness location”.

“It’s an expanded record of events that we were able to recover from within ground zero,” he said, describing it as a short-lived inferno at the regional level, followed by a long period of global cooling.

The asteroid “fried them, then [it] froze them. Not all the dinosaurs died that day, but many dinosaurs did.”

The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, builds on earlier work by the Jackson School of Geosciences which described how the crater formed and how life quickly recovered at the impact site.

Most of the material that filled the crater within hours of impact was produced at the impact site or was swept in by seawater pouring back into the crater from the surrounding Gulf of Mexico.

In just one day about 425 feet of material was deposited – a rate that’s among the highest ever encountered in the geologic record.

This breakneck rate of accumulation meant the rocks recorded what was happening in the environment within and around the crater in the minutes and hours after impact and provide clues about the longer-lasting effects of the asteroid strike.

The research details how the blast from the impact ignited trees and plants stretching thousands of miles away and triggered a massive tsunami that reached as far inland as Illinois (over 500 miles).

Inside the crater, as well as charcoal, the research team found a chemical biomarker associated with soil fungi within or just above layers of sand that shows signs of being deposited by resurging waters. This suggests the charred landscape was deluged by the tsunami, then pulled into the crater as the floodwaters retreated.

Jay Melosh, a Purdue University professor and expert on impact cratering, said finding evidence for wildfire helps scientists know their understanding of the asteroid impact is on the right track.

“It was a momentous day in the history of life, and this is a very clear documentation of what happened at ground zero,” said Professor Melosh, who was not involved with this study.

One of the most important findings from the research is the lack of sulphur in the core samples. The area surrounding the impact crater is full of sulphur-rich rocks. But there was no sulphur in the core.

The discovery supports the theory the asteroid impact vaporised the sulphur-bearing minerals present at the impact site and released it into the atmosphere, where it wreaked havoc on the Earth’s climate, reflecting sunlight away from the planet and causing global cooling.

Researchers estimate at least 325 billion metric tons of sulphur would have been released by the impact. That’s about four orders of magnitude greater than that spewed out during the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa – an event which cooled the Earth’s climate by an average of 1C for five years.

Sixty-six million years ago, Earth had a very bad day indeed. A giant asteroid up to 81 kilometres (50 miles) across smashed into the coast of what is now Mexico near Chicxulub - an event thought to have triggered a wave of extinction that killed 75 percent of all life on Earth.

Now, thanks to painstaking work drilling into the rock below the Chicxulub crater to extract precious core samples 500 to 1,300 metres (1,640 to 4,265 feet) below the seafloor, geologists have managed to reconstruct what happened on that fateful day.

And boy, was it extreme. Melted rock, charcoal, and a curious absence of sulphur in the cores are some of the telltale signatures of the impact event.

"It's an expanded record of events that we were able to recover from within ground zero," said geophysicist Sean Gulick from the University of Texas. "It tells us about impact processes from an eyewitness location."

The asteroid triggered a tsunami that towered several hundred metres, dumping rock and dirt back in the crater at a tremendous rate - around 130 metres (425 feet) of material was deposited in just a single day, preserving an environmental record of the area in and around the crater in the first minutes and hours after impact.

First, the impact site was a fiery hellscape. Then, the whole planet froze - resulting in the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event, which marks the end of the Cretaceous period, and the demise of non-avian dinosaurs.

"Not all the dinosaurs died that day, but many dinosaurs did," Gulick said.

The melted rock indicates that the asteroid hit with the force of 10 billion atomic bombs, setting forests aflame for thousands of kilometres, and triggering a tsunami that reached as far as current Illinois.

Then, when the tsunami waters receded, they dragged a bunch of material - including dirt (indicated by the presence of biomarkers associated with soil fungus) and charcoal from burnt trees - back into the fresh crater.

These events already would have had a dramatic impact on nearby ecosystems, but it's what happened next that truly changed the world. The clue lies in what the researchers didn't find there.

Namely, there was a remarkable absence of sulphur-bearing minerals, where usually they would be expected. This suggests that these rocks were vaporised by the impact, expelling tremendous amounts of sulphate aerosols into the atmosphere, where they blocked the light of the Sun, dramatically cooling Earth's temperatures for years after.

According to the researchers' calculations, somewhere around 325 billion metric tons of sulphur would have been ejected by the impact. That's four orders of magnitude higher than the sulphur spewed out during the 1883 Krakatoa eruption, which cooled the entire globe for five years after.

That sulphur, scientists believe, was the real killer - possibly exacerbated by later volcanic activity thought to have been triggered by the impact.

When the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs slammed into the planet, the impact set wildfires, triggered tsunamis and blasted so much sulfur into the atmosphere that it blocked the sun, which caused the global cooling that ultimately doomed the dinos.

That's the scenario scientists have hypothesized. Now, a new study led by The University of Texas at Austin has confirmed it by finding hard evidence in the hundreds of feet of rocks that filled the impact crater within the first 24 hours after impact.

The evidence includes bits of charcoal, jumbles of rock brought in by the tsunami's backflow and conspicuously absent sulfur. They are all part of a rock record that offers the most detailed look yet into the aftermath of the catastrophe that ended the Age of Dinosaurs, said Sean Gulick, a research professor at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (UTIG) at the Jackson School of Geosciences.

"It's an expanded record of events that we were able to recover from within ground zero," said Gulick, who led the study and co-led the 2016 International Ocean Discovery Program scientific drilling mission that retrieved the rocks from the impact site offshore of the Yucatan Peninsula. "It tells us about impact processes from an eyewitness location."

The research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Sept. 9 and builds on earlier work co-led and led by the Jackson School that described how the crater formed and how life quickly recovered at the impact site. An international team of more than two dozen scientists contributed to this study.

Most of the material that filled the crater within hours of impact was produced at the impact site or was swept in by seawater pouring back into the crater from the surrounding Gulf of Mexico. Just one day deposited about 425 feet of material—a rate that's among the highest ever encountered in the geologic record. This breakneck rate of accumulation means that the rocks record what was happening in the environment within and around the crater in the minutes and hours after impact and give clues about the longer-lasting effects of the impact that wiped out 75% of life on the planet.

Gulick described it as a short-lived inferno at the regional level, followed by a long period of global cooling.


"We fried them and then we froze them," Gulick said. "Not all the dinosaurs died that day, but many dinosaurs did."

Researchers estimate the asteroid hit with the equivalent power of 10 billion atomic bombs of the size used in World War II. The blast ignited trees and plants that were thousands of miles away and triggered a massive tsunami that reached as far inland as Illinois. Inside the crater, researchers found charcoal and a chemical biomarker associated with soil fungi within or just above layers of sand that shows signs of being deposited by resurging waters. This suggests that the charred landscape was pulled into the crater with the receding waters of the tsunami.

Jay Melosh, a Purdue University professor and expert on impact cratering, said that finding evidence for wildfire helps scientists know that their understanding of the asteroid impact is on the right track.

"It was a momentous day in the history of life, and this is a very clear documentation of what happened at ground zero," said Melosh, who was not involved with this study.

However, one of the most important takeaways from the research is what was missing from the core samples. The area surrounding the impact crater is full of sulfur-rich rocks. But there was no sulfur in the core.

That finding supports a theory that the asteroid impact vaporized the sulfur-bearing minerals present at the impact site and released it into the atmosphere, where it wreaked havoc on the Earth's climate, reflecting sunlight away from the planet and causing global cooling. Researchers estimate that at least 325 billion metric tons would have been released by the impact. To put that in perspective, that's about four orders of magnitude greater than the sulfur that was spewed during the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa—which cooled the Earth's climate by an average of 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit for five years.

Although the asteroid impact created mass destruction at the regional level, it was this global climate change that caused a mass extinction, killing off the dinosaurs along with most other life on the planet at the time.
