Studying in Germany : What you should know

This is in response to a FAQ I always get from scholars especially nairalanders.

The first point of contact is this website:
Daad.de/en

The website above contain almost all the university in Germany and some other sister universities around Germany.

Most of the schools in Germany are tuition free even for international students, you only get to pay a certain amount as semester fees say between 100-400 euros and most times the semester fee comes with a semester ticket to aid in transportation in your city or town.

However, before you're granted a student visa, you have to prove that you can take care of your living expenses with one of the following means ;

1. Block account: The estimated living expenses for a student in a month is 720euros, when you multiply that by 12 months, you get 8640euros. This is the amount you're required to block in an already opened account with either Deutsch bank, Fintiba or Xpatrio. It is called a block account because you will not be able to withdraw everything at once, only 720euros will be released to you every month.

2. Sponsorship letter: If you have a relative living and working legally in Germany, they can get you this letter. They'll have to visit the alien office in their city and will be required to provide some documents and pay a certain fee. The letter will be sent to you when they receive it so that you can go with it for your visa interview.

3. Scholarship: This is usually the best if you have the scholarship, your visa will be granted in under 2 weeks after interview. So try and look for scholarships you can apply to.

Now that you understand the financial situation, let's go into the application process.
To search for schools, click on this link
https://www.daad.de/deutschland/studienangebote/international-programmes/en/?p=l&q=&fos=0&lang[]=2&fee[]=0&sortBy=1&page=1&display=list

Filter your search to make it easier, there are English taught courses there.
Generally, the very important documents needed to apply to schools in Germany are;
1. Transcript
2. English Proficiency
3. School Certificates (Degree, Waec, etc)

However, depending on the school, some other documents needed are as follows.
4. Curriculum Vitae
5. Motivation letter
6. Reference letters
7. GRE test
8. Etcetera.. Visit your prospective school website and find out the documents they need from you.

Note: You don't apply with your original documents, you have to make photocopies of them and Certify them in High court or a Notary public. If you stay in Lagos, you can certify at the German Embassy too. You'll have to book appointment for that.

For those planning to go for a Bachelors course, you need a 100level transcript from a university to apply for a BSc program in Germany.
WAEC alone will not be enough and No, OND will not do, you need a HND.

For the application proper, it is always important to go through the website of the schools you want to apply to, you'll get a lot of information form there concerning how to apply. Some schools do only online applications, some require that you send your application documents to them by post after applying online, while in some you'll send your documents as pdf to their email address and then you get the uni assist crew.

Like I said earlier, it is important to go visit and read the websites.

When you get your admission letter, open a block account immediately(that is if you don't already have a sponsorship letter) and as soon as you get your account details, send an email to the embassy requesting for a visa interview date.
You need these to get an interview date:
1. Admission letter
2. Block account/sponsorship letter/scholarship letter
3. International passport data page(scanned)
Then your Full name and Resident address.

Prepare for your interview
Go for your interview

There is usually a link on university websites that shows you where to get a University lecturer’s contacts i.e your potential supervisor for your graduate courses.

Ensure you go through his or her past and present research areas of interest. They always have one particular research focus unlike what is applicable in our dear country.

Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement/Term Paper/Study Plan/Research Proposal.

A statement of purpose/Letter of motivation/Letter of Intent/Statement of research intent/personal statement/Study plan is essential part of your application, the approval of which is utterly crucial. While your grades, professional qualifications and work experiences might be similar to those of other candidates, a statement of purpose/personal statement/Letter of Intent is what separates you from the rest of the lot.

However, writing a Statement of Purpose/Letter of Intent is not an easy task, as it is time-consuming and needs a professional tone to it. So no matter how good a writer you are, an SOP/LOM that is not precise, professional, and perfect is in for a clear rejection by the authorities.

We, therefore, are here to assist you with your SOP/LOM/LOI/Study Plan/Research Proposal/Term Paper writing, to make it unique and impactful.

We believe in writing plagiarism free contents which can be edited until our clients are satisfied.

In the quest to further our education abroad, there are some preparations which should be made for our desires to be fruitful and one of such preparations is the preparation of our documents.

The documents needed are :

Academic CV :
While applying for further studies, jobs, grants, fellowships and even conferences, you will be required to submit an Academic CV. This document is different from a business CV and has a different format.
An academic CV focuses on academic experience and accomplishments. Anything not relevant to this should be considered for omission.
There can be more pages in an academic CV compared to a general CV. This is due to the additional sections and information that may be required for academia. The most important thing to keep in mind when writing your academic CV is to tailor it to each position you apply for. You should prioritize the accomplishments that are most important to the intuition/position you are applying for.

Statement of Purpose:
The Statement of Purpose is the single most important part of your application that will tell the admissions committee who you are, what has influenced your career path so far, your professional interests and where you plan to go from here.
The SoP is your chance to talk directly to the admissions committee. To make yourself stand out from among a multitude of similarly qualified candidates. To convince the committee that you have the spark, the thirst for knowledge that could add value to your class.
“A statement of purpose should be between 500 and 1,000 words,” says Pierce. He advises that students use a traditional font at a readable size (11- or 12-pt) and leave enough whitespace in the margins to make the statement easy-to-read. Make sure to double-space the statement if the university has requested it, he adds.

Study Plan :
A study plan is a summary of the subject requirements of your course and indicates when planned subjects should be studied. It indicates the subjects you have completed; are currently enrolled in; plan to study in the future; and those for which you have been granted advanced standing (credit for previous studies).
For those applying to Universities in China, this document will come in handy in the course of your application.
Here are some of the points you will address when writing your study Plan.
1. Why did you choose to study abroad in your accepted program?
2. What is your utmost educational objective?
3. Why are you not undertaking a similar course in your home country?
4. Have done research about studies in your country?
5. Will the program you interested in enhancing employment opportunities in your home country?
6. What ties you to your country?
These are some of the documents you need to prepare while planning for further studies.

Studying in the US- Important tips
1. Firstly prepare for the basic requirements.
The US is very serious about it's travel precautions, so you need genuine passport, ids, certificates, transcripts, (Just the basics).

2. Transcripts, that the most important. Some schools require official and unofficial transcripts. Most of them require unofficial first and official transcript later. Unofficial transcripts are the transcript given directly to students(student transcript).

3. Official ones are one that would be sent directly from your previous institution to you chosen school in US. But first it will be stated clearly if you need official or unofficial transcript for the application process.. (Mostly unofficial though).

4. Furthermore, some schools require transcript evaluations. This I must say is a headache because course by course evaluation of transcript cost much.So you have to check the school’s websites if you need a transcript evaluation.

5. Until you send your transcript for evaluation to the required institutions, you can’t complete your application. So all I am saying is for you to check on the school website first because most schools also take the pain to evaluate too for themselves.

6. The next is Statement of Purpose (SOP).Write a SOP stating why you want to undertake your chosen course and why you should be given a scholarship or paid tuition. (Call/Chat up Intelligentdude on : 08134657689 for a great SOP).

7. GRE is a PLUS. Some schools also need your GRE score for scholarship purposes and some need this in order to complete your application. Those with not so good class of degrees need a good GRE score to help their application(Very important). Don’t stress about TOEFL and IELTS.

8. If you are here at this point, you are good to apply to schools. Take time go online. Search requirements. Email admission office. Call admission office if you do not get feedback on time.

9. American schools unlike UK need you to pay admission fees ranging from 30 to 50 dollars and some a little more. Atleast apply to about 4 schools and try getting in touch with the admission office.

10. Applying alone doesn’t guarantee you admission. Just like your previous institution, it is based on merit. If you get admission, your scholarship amount will also be given.. Either full or half. It will be added to a separate page in your admission letter.GOOD LUCK!!

Scholarship talk centered on different countries especially those we are familiar with e.g Canada, USA, Germany,UK and China.
We will talk about Canada/US,GERMANY and China.

Let's start with Canada because statistically, everyone now wants to go to Canada because of the great opportunities in the country.

Getting scholarship abroad is not a one day journey, it's requires continuity, endurance, perseverance, hardwork not neglecting the God factor. The decision to study outside your home country is very enticing but is not always very easy, especially when you are trying to get funds from the school or professor.

Canada for instance is a good place to study especially if you would like to stay and work after study. Most schools don't ask for GRE and Toefl especially if you are from Nigeria.

To get scholarship/grant in Canada requires great determination and consistency but believe me it is very possible. We have a member of our group (Creative Minds)presently studying in Canada via Research grant. In the year 2017 while he was serving,he chatted me up telling me of his intention to further his study after NYSC. I had to draft his Academic CV and gave him tips but he was more than determined,he did extensive research and did lot's of skype interview with Professors in his field in different parts of the world.
He later go a grant and he is presently schooling there while working as a graduate assistant in Canada.

The following are the things to put in place before embarking on a scholarship journey

1. Prayer

2. Get your certificates ready i.e degree certificates plus transcripts.
Getting transcript in a Nigerian University maybe a bit tasking because you may be applying to different universities. For every application, you will have to request for your transcript from your University which means your school would charge per transcript per school of application but a good way to solve this issue is to use a travelling agent or the organization you are working with. You can pick the transcript once you school sends it and then you can proceed to making different application to different schools. We have solved the transcript issue right?

Statement of Purpose (SOP)/Motivational Letter (ML)(carries a good scoring, make yours scholastic because this is how they will know whether you know what you want to do or not) .

Furthermore, draft your Statement of Purpose/Letter of Intent in a way that will communicate your educational background, experience, passion, interest, the relationship between your undergraduate course of study and you proposed Masters course, your personality, why you choosed the University, why the Lecturer etc .

(For your Statement of Purpose, Research Plan, Letter of Intent, Study Plan etc on : 08134657689).

Address the SOP statement of purpose) or ML (Motivation Letter) to the selected supervisors and send it to their respective email addresses; (Note that Foreign Lecturers treat emails seriously unlike our Nigerian lecturers). You can possibly attach some regular documents such as your transcript and resume. If you don’t get a response after five working days you can attempt placing a call to their Office phones or send the email again.( e.g you sent your application tomorrow being Friday, if you don’t get a response from them, send another next week Friday) but avoid bombarding them with emails so they wont see you as nuisance. You can imagine the number of mails these guys receive daily.

“Getting a supervisor” is a very important part of the application process because for the majority of universities in Canada, securing a supervisor is almost tantamount to gaining admission. It is always good to get the consent of a supervisor before going ahead with the payment of the application fee; remember application fees varies but is usually 100$.

Don't forget to Make Inquiries about the Availability of Research Funding and If you get a response from a Professor and he/she is willing to take you in as his or her student, then you just hit a jackpot and congratulations are in order because you have successfully secured an advisor. You can go ahead to make inquiries from the Professor if it is possible to be a beneficiary of a research funding and work as a research assistant. If you get a positive response as regard the funding, you will be required to work with your supervisor on a specified research topic and this just secured a job for you as a Graduate Research Assistant.(with a mouth watering pay, they call it stipends but it is sometimes around #400k/monthly but the amount varies. Some may even give you Field truck etc.

What to note

Start as early as possible and be well-acquainted with the deadlines for the Winter semester (January), Summer (May) and Fall (September).

Also note that "Not all universities have openings in Summer, the predominant entry period for the majority of the courses in universities are Winter and Fall semesters".
