5w-30 is designed for winter(weather below -1°c) , in winter time Texas go below -20°c(snow) which will freeze most engine oil, stress engine and cause poor emissions, while here in Lagos the lower hv seen is 20°c, even 50w-70 will flow freely at 20°c grin( the lower it gets the chiller it becomes nd when it gets to -0°c it starts to snow)
The 5w means at freezing point it will get to all engine parts in 5seconds, while the 20w will take 20seconds, but we dont hv such freezing weather here in Nigeria so they all flow fast anytime. So i think 5w should not be used on a taxi/Uber car cause the car is always on a motion and hardly sits for long
The only problem with 20w is that if not changed on time it will cause slug buildup, but for the 5w if it's to be used it Should be an original synthetic(mobile,Castro e.t.c),
Next is oil shortage, this is cause by either bad piston rings(delay in oil change or overheated) or worn out seals(which will eventually occur on all engine as they age), this doesn't necessary mean d engine is dead, as long as it's not smoking, oil stop leak can solve this problem (it swells all seals bck to normal shape).

Den oil filter issue, oil filters are not transparent so even the manufacturers cannot tell what's going on in there, those 10-15k oil filters are marketing strategies, they never last that long, most oil filters hv this inbuilt bypass technology built in them that once they gets clogged up, d oil bypasses and flow directly into d engine which might eventually cause premature wear to the metal bearings,
Even the almighty shining Fram filter was cut open and compared to other high quality filters on YouTube grin, Fram was so bad that its paper breaks when touched lol.
Do ur research be4 u argue bro, most of the cars made in Asia and south America do not hv this 5w written on them, some Don't even write anything on their oil covers, hv seen an Asian made BMW with 10w-30 written on its oil cap.

I thought the numbers in front of the w's actually stands for the viscosity of the oil when the engine is cold or hot? Never knew it is the time the oil takes to move round the engine. Will re-read again.

Some things are very wrong in that write up. For a 5W-30 oil, the "5W" talks about condition in winter, agreed, the W stands for winter anyways. The "30", however stands for viscosity at a very hot temperature, typically believed to be 100°C, typical operating temperature range of most vehicles.

30" graded oil if you want a proper lubrication of your engine.

since 30 can provide a proper lubrication for your engine, then 50 which is higher than 30 will provide much more lubrication especially for your metal bearings and also can withstand excess heat incase of sudden overheating
All I'm trying to say is 20w-50 is a good oil if used accordingly and not abused

You should hv done price review before confirming the trip. that trip should not have been less than 2100.

What it means is that, if a manufacturer recommends 0W-30, and you are in Nigeria, you can use 0W-30, 5W-30, This is because you don't have winter conditions where you are. But it is highly recommended you stick to " 30" graded oil if you want a proper lubrication of your engine.

This is the right take on this matter, the other bro was way off.

For older engines, you may be correct, but for newer engines however, things have changed. Engines are now built with very "tight clearances" within them. This means that if you use oil that is too thick, those "tight areas" will not receive enough lubrication. Implication is that after a period, shorter than the manufacturer intended, you start having signs of lubrication starvation in such engines. It is one major reason why engines of cars in Nigeria sound louder than when
they just came in, if they spend a few months here. Examples of this abound.

As we entered them tear me ticket 15k5, I asked for what, when I be staff ? the guy continued spewing crap, meanwhile the guy that followed me to the council had bolted. They kept insisting I pay etc that my car will soon be impounded, told him point blank I can't pay jack. Na so I vex make one or 2 calls, went to meet one of the Top men there, that one just vex give me escort, immediately them change mouth, collect their ticket back inflate my tyre, begin beg me . For oil filters, Fram has never been regarded as a premium filter, it doesn't mean there are no high mileage filters out there.

Oh, for those cars without something written on their oil caps, their owner's manual still indicate the right oil most times.

Now i understand better. Thanks

Don't mind them they said I can nor park there that it has to be off the road. I Asked that what about those who one for burial at Atan cemetery, they said there are designated spots marked on the road, that next time I should park at the turning to my left after the police post. So when you turn left, please don't park on the right but rather left side. They said Illegal parking according to the receipt I was given

Hey guys.
Since we're talking engine oils, what would you advise on this?

I drive a 2011 Toyota Camry with a mileage of about 196,000. What is the best engine oil for high milage cars like this considering manufacturer recommendation?

The former owner used pure mineral oil which I recently just changed to the manufacturer recommended 0W20 - (Synthetic, Mobil)
