Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has stated that he’s ashamed that he has not been able to pay pensioners their pension money.

The state pensioners have have refused to vacate the entrance to the Government House in Makurdi despite the Governor’s advice.

Pensioners of the state have last week moved to the entrance of the Government House, sleeping on mats vowing to occupy the seat of power until their pensions and gratuities amounting to N25billion are paid as they claim they have not been paid for 25 months.

Governor Ortom while addressing the pensioners said: “I’m ashamed that my government has been unable to meet its financial obligation to the pensioners, who are senior citizens”.

The Governor who describe the situation as sad promise to address to the pensioners plight noting that he met about N17billion as gratuity and N34billion as pension arrears when he took over the mantle of leadership, but has reduced the amount before the state found itself in a difficult financial situation.

However, he called for understanding from the pensioners adding that his administration has taken steps to address the problems through domestication of pension law to ease their plight.

Ortom noted that as a palliative measure, he has obtained a bank overdraft of N611 million, adding that “between Monday and Tuesday the pensioners will be paid two- month pensions.”

Nigeria public office holders will always give off the impression that doing "ordinary" things like remuneration of workers and pension payments are such difficult tasks to achieve.

Come to think of it, the Governor isn't being asked to come up with solutions to intricate public matters like job creation or better health care. The money he would be paying out, he would do next to nothing to get. All he would need to do is simply direct the agency responsible for the task of payment of pensions and there!

He even attempted to stir sympathy by saying he inherited a backlog of ₦10b plus in pension payments. Even if that's to sail, how has he fared in that regard since his time in office?

When one considers that all these things are happening when China is already aiming for the moon and Mars, the only conclusion is that Nigeria is doomed. But I know Nigeria shall be great.

Perhaps the worst governor in recent memory. But then, I think every nation and people deserve a leader that they get. The Benue people were deceived that the reason for his non performance in the first term was herdsmen so they voted him a second term disregarding all the tell tell signs. Well I can only wish them quick recovery cos that state under this governor is obviously stateless.

These pensions were deducted from their salaries during their working days, now that the pensions are supposed to be given to them. They were denied. Is it that the pension was embezzled or what really happened? Alot is wrong with this country. Ordinary pension credibility we can't get it right. Smh!
