This is actually cool.

There is a school in southwest that allows parents pay school fees of their wards using plastic waste, I've been wandering what the school does with it but now I know better

temme something! paying school fees with plastic bottles?!? wonders shall never end!

Lovely idea, but I am thinking about how well the road would act with vehicle tyres in terms of grip and wear and tear.

Yeah, someone even made a post about it here on Nairaland. I think it happened in either Ogun state or Lagos state.

I've not read much about this plastic road yet. But even if it is kind of hazardous, then it could be limited to remote places in dire need of road and where traffic is less

This is truly a welcome idea only if we can have a means of sustainability of this project. Research should be made on possible ways of improving it overtime.

This is where you're ignorant about engineering design. Don't you think the engineers building that road won't take that into consideration? It's the first thing they'll consider before anything else, but then the hatred for the north.........

What happened to the large bitumen deposit in Ondo state, paving our roads is not rocket science but if all the roads are tarred how will your wicked politicians award bogus inflated contracts.
Re: Plastic Roads: The Possible End Of Pot Holes And Flood In Nigeria by banji1(m): 10:33am On Sep 13, 2019
Well, I dont know the cost of plastic roads but I think concrete roads are better than the asphalt and bitumen, most especially since its cheaper. I just don't know my our govt isn't looking in that direction.

To all Non Engineer in this room.

What the article is taking about is that

1. It will reduce the dirt of plastic or rubber littering in the environment.

2. The plastic will still be mixed with bitumen..the plastic will served as added component/material to the asphalt material for durability.

3. The ratio of the bitumen will be higher that the plastic, rubber or PVC material to be used.

4. If it is to be used in Nigeria. It will be good to be used for the potholes.

5. Before this is done series of test will be carried out depending on intensity of heat in such environment.. The higher the heat in the environment the more bitumen to be added to the plastic/rubber/PVC.

Can it withstand heat. There is a reason why asphalt and car tyres are black. Or are they going to make use of black plastics only?
Which is?

Great idea and innovation!

Nigeria, especially southern riverine states should immediately tap into this technology.

These materials are first sorted from plastic waste. After sorting, the material is cleaned, dried, and shredded. The shredded plastic is mixed and melted at around 170°C. [7] Hot bitumen is then added and mixed with the melted plastic. After mixing the mixture is laid as one would with regular asphalt concrete. So far, no large scale, systematic approach has been employed to build roads entirely of plastics. On September 13, 2018, the Dutch company Volkerwessels built a bicycle path made of recycled plastic in Zwolle, in the North- east part of the Netherlands. According to the Guardian, "A second path is to be installed in Giethoorn in Overijssel, and Rotterdam is the city most likely to take up the technology

Well Plastic road project seems viable, I watched a video recently on YouTube on how plastic interlocking tiles are being made and I understood that these tiles are not 100% plastic made some other components like cement, and chemicals were added I think same goes for Plastic roads

It's a viable project from my perspective.

While the idea of plastic roads are relatively new, some countries like India, UK, US, Indonesia are already making some progress in building plastic roads. In January 2019, The Department of Transport announced a £1.6 million(approx. 700M Naira) UK trial of a plastic road technology developed by MacRebur, an asphalt enhancement company based in Scotland.

There are more than 34,000 km of plastic roads in India, mostly in rural areas. More than half of the roads in the southern state of Tamil Nadu are plastic.
What are your thoughts about this, we would like to hear from you.

My brother have you forgotten this is 9G-rear we are always ahead of the world when it comes to project funds cos nah 9G speed our government dey take spend money for project. You see that trial in UK eehn (imagine just 700M naira baaaah!!) sounds sweet i think, if we want to do that same trial in our dearly beloved Buhari's country trust me its going to be 700B naira (nah make baba just shift the Milli'x to Billi'x)..no stress am ooo. Before buhari go use our 2023 borrow loan for plastic road, abeg make we dey manage our patch-patch road.

Excellent idea on the surface. What do our engineers in the house think about it?
it will be excellent especially if the right choice of material is chosen also cost should be considered.
polyphenylene sulphide and nylon derivatives would be great.
if this is done coupled with good drainage, bad roads will become myth in nigeria.
am a polymer and textile engineer.
so i know what am saying

Black plastic? Are you for real or just joking ?
the whole thing is mineral based so you can use alkyd black to colour it black.

Coal tar did not last. Cement did not survive. How do you think plastic will live to see another morning? Waste in Lagos and Nigeria in general is poorly manage. Other countries take plastic drinks as well, but they were able to contain it.

That's the point, plastic wastes in Nigeria are poorly managed cos we including the government have this mentality that it have no value, the success of this project generally will give plastic products value

And please stop comparing countries, don't always criticize find solutions instead, I know for sure you'll probably classify USA as one of the countries with good plastic waste management system, well do you know USA Ships its plastic waste to countries like China and Philippines for recycling ?? And as of last month these countries stopped receiving these wastes cause all their waste factories are filled making this countries a technical dump site. What's my point, every country has a problem especially waste problem so don't criticize or compare

*Find* *Solutions*

Indiscipline and the ever growing population in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole, has given birth to a menace that might choke us up if it's not curtailed.Yes, I am referring to plastic bottles.

One person dropping a plastic bottle on the road may seem harmless, but imagine a million people replicating this bad habit, we would be left with a filthy environment and clogged drainages, which gives rise to flood.

Just take a look at this :

I would save the sermon of indiscipline for another day. Let's talk about plastic roads. You are not alone, I was shocked the first time I heard the term. But they already exist.

Plastic roads are made entirely of plastic or of composites of plastic with other materials, unlike regular roads made with asphalt.

Although, it has its disadvantages, the advantages outweigh regular asphalt concrete roads. Plastic-bitumen composite roads have better wear resistance, this means less potholes and less repairs.

Thinking about all the plastic bottles I see when I travel through Lagos, I am forced to think about the possibilities of a pothole free Nigeria, using recycled plastics. This should drastically reduce the massive over-inflated budgets allocated to building and fixing roads. Let's not forget that getting rid of these plastic bottles would also reduce the issue of clogged drainages which lead to floods.

What are your thoughts about this, we would like to hear from you.

Don't forget to share !.

Please note that potholes are not as a result of the asphalt but the very foundation the asphalt was layered on. If the soil is well compacted and possibly coated to prevent water from seeping through then it's bye bye to potholes. However that process is expensive which is why always opt for a cheaper alternative.
Plastic roads will also be as useless as asphalt if the foundation is not well fortified

So you think he would not still change milli to billing if we continue to manage the asphalt. The idea here is reducing blockage of drains which often lead to flooding by the indiscriminate dumping of plastic materials. As long as plastic bags and bottles are widely used for packaging, any recycling plan or technology towards reducing their environmental impact is welcomed
