i wanted to reply that guy you qouted but i could already tell that he reasons through his anus. You just told him the best way buhari could have handled this. Increase tax on imported rice.
Buhari has vowed to punish nigerians and the zombies are included. Just imagine that guy happy that he bought rice for 17k. Nonsense.
You are the senseless one here. Rice through the ports, already attracts high taxes. The ones coming through the borders were 100% smuggled rice. Let me alsoi inform your ignorant self that some govts of rice producing countries, especially Thailand and Pakistan, at times subsidize rice exportation to Nigeria, regardless of our tax to combat local production. I am telling you what I know firsthand. They don't want our rice mills to take off. Their rice mills depend largely on Nigerian market. Hence, the govt-backed sabotage moves. Nigerians should stop being ignorant. Countries are waging economic wars against us.

India, 2 years ago, gave funds to Olam to build a big poultry in Kaduna, to deceive Buhari, just to allow influx of their corn. They flooded our market with the same corn they claimed would be used as feedstock for the fake poultry.

Enough said.

A bag of Naija rice is N17k

The borders should remain closed!

Nigerians are funny people. You want development but want to keep supporting the economies of neighbouring countries, who keep dumping substandard products in Nigeria, through smuggling, at the expense of local production, our economy, and health.

This should be sustained. Nigerian farmers, traders and consumers are eventual beneficiaries.
Foreign rice is substandard? In the international market can Nigerian Rice square up to Thailand Rice?

Lol let me tell you what they do.

These countries have massive strategic reserves for their grains. They ship the ones that have spent 15 to 20 years to Nigeria at very cheap prices to discourage local production in Nigeria. Their governments fund this.

It seems Nigerians don't know what they want.

They want development without suffering any consequences.

It's only in Nigeria that someone would want to eat his cake and have it.

So many countries keep dumping cheap substandard products on our country.

Benin with a population of 16 million is now the second largest importer of rice in the world.

Who are those eating the rice in Benin?

Benin republic deliberately sponsors criminals and smugglers to undermine our country for the purpose of sustaining its economy.

You that understand economics should tell us the economic implication of massive smuggling of rice, turkey and other food items through neighbouring countries.

Rice importation was not banned. Only the stoppage of smuggling at land borders.

We have become so use to crime, that we think criminal activities are now the norm.

Can local manufacturers produce a bag of rice for 8k?

Would you rather encourage local production that would create thousands of job opportunities for the ever growing Nigerian population or would rather enjoy buying cheap substandard rice dumped on our country by cartels?

And about 80% of that rice is destined for the Nigerian market, that is after importers pay duties to the Benin republic government and some people are still angry because of this good move by the FG

Thank God for Buhari. PDP just wasted Nigerias youths. Come and see asinine comments.

The borders will remain closed. If you cannot take a position in rice through crowd funding or farming or even trading in it, you will lose. Meanwhile northern youths will smile to the bank.
You want government to allow smuggling (an illegality) so that you can eat rice. You actually have to be questioning the educational system that brought you up and should not be surprised that US and SA are throwing your generation of Nigerians out if their country.
I have said it many times that this young generation are not viable. They are lazy, dont have strength and can only be"boys"

It's sad that those cartel flooding our Market with substandard products will wail to high heaven and claim they are the friends of the masses, when in reality they are the reason why an average Nigerian in his/her mid to late twenties cannot find any decent job anywhere.

Of course, more than 90% of the rice is destined for the Nigerian market. The government of Benin makes huge money from tariffs and the people of Nigeria get short-changed.

Nonetheless, what matters to an average Nigerian is buying rice at 8k, while many would still hop on the next plane out of the country to wash dishes in some other country that would maltreat them.

You no know nothing, Jon Snow.

You bloody socialists are the reason this country can never develop.

No country has ever attained true development through protectionism.

A bag of locally produced rice is 17k and you are celebrating while foreign rice was 8k when GEJ left.

Closing border will not solve anything. People will smuggle the rice and make it more expensive.

Progressive nations use taxes to discourage consumption but our dead wood president thinks is by closing border.
Thank you ma. Porous borders can be closed if for security reason. But rice should be allowed to be imported the country through designated borders and importers and distributors should be licenced. However, import tarrif should be high enough to discourage importation and encourage local production. I stand with liberal economy not protectionism

Rice can still be imported today through our ports, nobody stops any importer, the problem we have now is that the importers illegally channel them through Benin and Togo and it is then smuggled into Nigeria
The government loses in collection of tariffs, farmers are not encouraged to produce more because of the depressed price and less people are employed in rice farming while creating jobs for Asians and extra billions in revenue for Benin and Togo

what joy does this sadistic old man derive from punishing Nigerians since 1984. The painful part of it is that he has millions of "suffering and smiling " fools as supporters.
You people still don't understand a thing about Buhari.
It's not age that is the problem or any latter acquired sadistic tendency.
The main issue is that Buhari has never had the capacity, brain wise to manage anything or think out ideas.
He is like a man with an inborn brain defect or rare disease process such that anytime he tries to use his brain to think out or understand something,he starts having this excruciating headache that affects his whole body system.
So what does such an individual do?He avoids tasking his brain,no matter how little the issue.
The only thing people like that can bear in terms of brain trauma arising out of attempt to analyze things,is religious and ethnic bigotry because they don't need to think out what to do in such cases:just defend your religion and tribe,at whatever cost.
Is not age that is his problem, but bigotry and inborn intellectual deficit.
